기드온이 받은 믿음의 응답 (히11:32)

서론

뉴욕 대학 병원에 프레드 엡스타인 박사가 쓴 ‘내가 다섯 살이 되면’ 이라는 책이 있다. 그 책을 보게되면 하루는 응급실로 나오미라는 네 살 짜리 어린아이가 실려왔다. 그 아이는 뇌 종양으로 동맥이 파열되서 뇌출혈이 일어났다. 살릴 가능성은 전혀 없었다. 그런데 다행히도 수술이 잘 되서 나오미의 의식이 회복되었다. 그런데 그 아이는 머리에 붕대를 칭칭 감아서 눈, 코, 입 밖에 보이지 않았다. 그런데 그 아이의 두 눈은 아주 생기가 넘쳐 흘렀다. 매일 진찰하러 오는 엡스타인 박사님에게 자기 꿈 이야기를 매일처럼 했다. ”선생님 제가 다섯 살이 되면 줄넘기를 배울거에요. 뒤로 넘는 법도 배울 거에요. 또 제가 다섯 살이 되면 오빠처럼 만화책을 읽을거에요.“ 항상 활기차게 눈을 반짝거리면서 이야기했다고 한다. 그런데 의사 선생님이 보기에는 그가 아마 본능적으로 네 살을 넘기기 힘들 것이라는 것을 알고 있구나 하고 생각했다. 그런데 그 아이는 결코 절망하지 않았다. 매일 반짝거리는 눈으로 희망을 갖고 몸부림을 쳤다. 이 전문가인 의사의 눈으로도 의학적으로는 불가능한 상태였다. 그런데 나오미가 기적적으로 회복이 되었다. 그러면서 25년이 지난 지금 나오미는 한 가게의 점원으로 힘차게 살고있다고 기록하고 있다. 이 엡스타인 박사는 나오미를 보면서 의사된 자기가 많은 것을 깨달았다고 한다. 과학과 의학이 아무리 발달해도 한계가 있구나 하는 것을 깨달았다. 그리고 도저히 불가능한 일을 가능케 하는 무언 힘이 있다는 것을 발견했다. 그러면서 그는 그 앞에 겸손할 수 밖에 없다는 것을 깊이 깨달았다고 한다. 오늘 우리는 그 하나님께서 귀중한 말씀을 주셨다.

1. 하나님이 찾으시는 일꾼

1) 백성들의 고통

오늘 말씀은 기드온에 대한 말씀이다.

히 11:32 내가 무슨 말을 더 하리요 기드온, 바락, 삼손, 입다, 다윗 및 사무엘과 선지자들의 일을 말하려면 내게 시간이 부족하리로다

32절 말씀에 나오는 인물을 다 이야기하려고 하다가 한 명 한 명이 너무나 귀해서, 특히 사사기 말씀을 따로 할 기회가 없기 때문에 한 사람 한 사람 말씀드리려고 한다. 저는 이 기드온의 말씀을 보면서 여러가지로 많이 깨닫게해주시는 하나님의 음성을 들을 수 있었다. 하나님께서 모세를 통해서 여호수아를 통해서 이스라엘 백성들을 애굽 땅에서 구원해서 가나안 땅에 들어오게 하셨다. 가나안 땅에 들어왔는데도 불구하고 여호수아가 죽고나니까 다시 이 사람들이 우상에 젖어들어 하나님을 진노케하는 삶을 살기 시작했다. 우리가 복음을 듣지 못하면 언제든지 다시 악으로, 우상으로 빠질 수 밖에 없다는 것을 오늘 말씀을 통해서 다시 알 수 있다. 사사기서 6장 1절 말씀을 보게되면 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 보고 행하신 내용이 나타난다.

삿 6:1 이스라엘 자손이 또 여호와의 목전에 악을 행하였으므로 여호와께서 칠 년 동안 그들을 미디안의 손에 넘겨 주시니

저는 이 말씀을 묵상하는 가운데 여러가지를 깨달을 수 있었다. 하나님께서 그처럼 역사를 하셔서 가나안 땅으로 인도하셨는데도 불구하고 이들이 범죄하니까 하나님께서 벌을 내리시는데 완전히 없애버리시는 것이 아니라 칠 년 동안만 벌을 내리겠다고 작정하셨다. 하나님께서는 인간이 범죄했음에도 징벌해서 없애시는 것이 아니라 칠 년 동안만 벌을 내리고 다시 이 백성들을 내가 축복해주리라 하고 말씀하셨다. 칠 년 동안이라는 것은 무슨 기간인가.

삿 6:6 이스라엘이 미디안으로 말미암아 궁핍함이 심한지라 이에 이스라엘 자손이 여호와께 부르짖었더라

이 미디안 군대들이 벌떼처럼 몰려와서 이스라엘 백성들이 농사진 것을 추수할 때 쯤에 싹 가져가서 이스라엘 백성들이 먹을 것이 없었다. 평상시에 가만히 놔두었다가 추수할 때가 되면 와서 빼앗아가버리고 이스라엘 사람들을 굶게 만들었다. 궁핍함이 심했다. 고생을 해서 이제 먹으려니까 다 가져가서 하나님께 나올 수 밖에 없었다. 우상숭배를 했을 때는 우상들이 축복 줄 것으로 알았다가 안되니까 이제 하나님께 나와서 부르짖는 것이다. 하나님께서는 칠 년 쯤 되면 돌아오겠지 하고 계산하시고 말씀하신 것 같다. 하나님 자녀의 특징이라는 것은 어려움을 당할 때 도저히 견딜 수 없을 때 최후의 소망이 아버지께 나와서 부르짖는 것이다. 그런데 하나님께서는 부르짖는 그 소리를 들으시고 모든 것을 다 잊으시고 응답하시 시작하신다. 이제 내가 하나님인 줄을 아느냐, 내가 이 문제를 해결해 줄 줄을 아느냐 하시고 기뻐하시면서 응답하시 시작하신다. 이 부르짖는 기도를 들으시고 사사기서 6장 12절 말씀에 말씀하신다.

삿 6:12 여호와의 사자가 기드온에게 나타나 이르되 큰 용사여 여호와께서 너와 함께 계시도다 하매

이스라엘 백성들 가운데 많은 사람을 찾으셨겠다. 그 중에서 쓰실 사람 기드온을 찾아가셔서 내가 너를 쓰겠다고 말씀하시는 것이다. 여기서 중요한 메세지를 주고 계신다. 그러면 어떻게 해서 기드온을 찾아가셨는가. 분명히 성경을 보게되면 하나님이 찾으시는 일꾼이 있다.

2) 하나님이 찾으시는 일꾼

삿 6:15 그러나 기드온이 그에게 대답하되 오 주여 내가 무엇으로 이스라엘을 구원하리이까 보소서 나의 집은 므낫세 중에 극히 약하고 나는 내 아버지 집에서 가장 작은 자니이다 하니

하나님께서 큰 용사여 하시면서 너를 통하여 내 일을 하겠다고 하시니까 하나님 내가 무엇인데 합니까, 나는 므낫세 중에 약하고 아버지 집에서 가장 작은 자라고 한다. 하나님께서 항상 찾으시는 일꾼이 바로 겸손한 자이다. 그리고 순수한 자, 깨끗한 자를 찾으신다. 계산이 복잡하고 머리가 잘 돌아가는 사람이 아니라 하나님 앞에 겸손하고 순수한 자를 사용하신다. 모세를 보시기 바란다. 모세에게 80년 만에 나타나셔서 내가 너를 사용하겠다고 말씀하신다. 그 때 모세는 아이고 하나님 안됩니다 저는 도저히 그런 그릇이 못 됩니다 하고 말했다. 그 때 하나님께서 내가 너와 함께 하겠다, 그러면 된다고 말씀하셨다. 모세가 힘이 있고 지식이 높을 때는 하나님께서 가만히 놔두고 쓰지 않으셨다. 81년이 되서 죽을 때가 다 되었구나, 끝났지 하면서 다 내려놓았을 때 하나님께서는 그 때 찾아오셔서 내가 너를 쓰겠다고 하셨다. 절대 그렇다. 렘넌트들 꼭 잡으시기 바란다. 사울왕도 처음에 부르심을 받을 때는 아주 겸손했다. 부르니까 숨기도 했다. 언제부터 버림을 받는가. 교만함이 생기고부터이다. 내가 좀 괜찮다, 내가 좀 있다 할 때 하나님께서는 버리시는 것이다. 우리 렘넌트들이 생명으로 잡으시기 바란다. 다윗도 그랬다. 처음에 집안에서 형제들 가운데 가장 인정받지 못하는 사람이었다. 예수님이 쓰신 열 두 제자들도 전부 다 어부들이었다. 내세울게 아무것도 없는 사람들이었다. 하나님께서 함께하시니까 어마어마한 존경받는 사람으로 바뀌어졌다. 기드온이 워낙 겸손해서 나는 안되겠습니다, 어찌 나 같은 사람이 할 수 있습니다 하니까 16절에 말씀하신다.

삿 6:16 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 내가 반드시 너와 함께 하리니 네가 미디안 사람 치기를 한 사람을 치듯 하리라 하시니라

하나님께서 기뻐하시는 것은 연약한 자와 함께하시면서 그를 통해서 영광을 받으시는 것이다. 정말 언약으로 잡으시기 바란다. 벼도 곡식이 익으면 고개를 숙이게 되어있다. 이것을 하나님께서 기뻐하신다. 그런데 하나님께서는 부족한 이들을 세우시기 시작한다.

3) 겸손한 자를 끝까지 세우심

삿 6:17-18 기드온이 그에게 대답하되 만일 내가 주께 은혜를 얻었사오면 나와 말씀하신 이가 주 되시는 표징을 내게 보이소서 18 내가 예물을 가지고 다시 주께로 와서 그것을 주 앞에 드리기까지 이 곳을 떠나지 마시기를 원하나이다 하니 그가 이르되 내가 너 돌아올 때까지 머무르리라 하니라

기드온이 얼른 가서 염소 새끼를 가져와서 무교병으로 떡을 만들고 국을 만들어서 하나님의 사자 앞에 내놓는다.

삿 6:21 여호와의 사자가 손에 잡은 지팡이 끝을 내밀어 고기와 무교병에 대니 불이 바위에서 나와 고기와 무교병을 살랐고 여호와의 사자는 떠나서 보이지 아니한지라

하나님께서 그 앞에서 초자연적인 역사를 보여주셨다. 정말 하나님이셨구나 하는 것을 깨닫게되는 것이다. 내가 너한테 이야기한 것이 사람의 말이 아니라 하나님이 직접 하신 말씀이라는 확신을 심어주시는 것이다. 그런데 미디안 군 13만 5천 명이 벌떼처럼 몰려왔다. 그 때 기드온이 하나님께서 자기에게 명령하신 것을 알고 있음에도 다시 또 의심이 들었다. 그래서 기드온이 정말 미안합니다 함께하시는 증거를 다시 한 번 보여주세요 하고 이야기한다.

삿 6:37 보소서 내가 양털 한 뭉치를 타작 마당에 두리니 만일 이슬이 양털에만 있고 주변 땅은 마르면 주께서 이미 말씀하심 같이 내 손으로 이스라엘을 구원하실 줄을 내가 알겠나이다 하였더니

그러니까 이슬이 양털만 있고 나머지 땅은 바짝 말라있었다. 그러면 아 알겠습니다 하고 전쟁하러 나가야할 것 아닌가. 그런데 기드온은 그래도 또 의심되니까 한 번만 더 용서해주세요 여기만 마르고 나머지 땅은 다 젖도록해서 증거를 보여주세요 한다. 그런데 하나님께서는 화도 내지 아니하시고 또 똑같이 증거를 주셨다. 그 때 기드온이 이스라엘 족속들에게 말하기를 하나님께서 나를 부르셨다, 미디안과 싸울 병력들은 나에게 와라 하고 모으게 된다. 그런데 이스라엘 백성들이 모인 것이 겨우 3만 명 정도 모이게된다. 13만 5천 명과 3만 명이라는 것은 게임이 안된다. 하나님께서는 3만 명이 너무 많다, 줄여라 하셨다. 어떻게 줄이느냐.

2. 하나님이 찾으시는 전쟁

1) 하나님의 전쟁

삿 7:3 이제 너는 백성의 귀에 외쳐 이르기를 누구든지 두려워 떠는 자는 길르앗 산을 떠나 돌아가라 하라 하시니 이에 돌아간 백성이 이만 이천 명이요 남은 자가 만 명이었더라

하나님께서 함께하시는데도 두려워 떠는 자가 있느냐, 조금이라고 무서움에 떠는 자는 돌아가라고 한다. 돌아간 지가 2만 2천 명이고 남은 자는 만 명 밖에 없었다. 하나님께서는 그것을 보시고 이것도 많다는 것이다. 그래서 이제 다시 가서 물 먹는 것을 시험으로 해서 골라라 한다.

삿 7:7 여호와께서 기드온에게 이르시되 내가 이 물을 핥아 먹은 삼백 명으로 너희를 구원하며 미디안을 네 손에 넘겨 주리니 남은 백성은 각각 자기의 처소로 돌아갈 것이니라 하시니

손으로 물 떠먹는 자를 보니까 3백 명이라. 이것으로 되었다 하신다. 그러면서 말씀하신다.

삿 7:9 그 밤에 여호와께서 기드온에게 이르시되 일어나 진영으로 내려가라 내가 그것을 네 손에 넘겨 주었느니라

하나님께서 기드온이 전쟁 나가기 이전에 이미 승리의 답을 주셨다. 대단히 중요하다. 하나님께서는 우리가 어려운 일을 당했을 때 말씀으로 답을 주신다. 말씀을 주시는 순간에 전쟁은 이미 끝난 것이다. 그러면 기드온이 현장에 가서 무얼 하는가. 말씀이 성취되는 것을 확인하는 것이다. 그를 통해서 13만 5천 명을 전멸시키셨다. 여기서 하나님의 법칙을 잡아야겠다.

2) 하나님의 법칙

미다안으로부터 구원한 장군이 기드온이다. 그는 처음서부터 용감한 사람이 아니었다. 겁쟁이었다. 미디안 군대가 올 때 숨어서 밀을 타작했던 사람이었다.

삿 6:11 여호와의 사자가 아비에셀 사람 요아스에게 속한 오브라에 이르러 상수리나무 아래에 앉으니라 마침 요아스의 아들 기드온이 미디안 사람에게 알리지 아니하려 하여 밀을 포도주 틀에서 타작하더니

그런데 그 겁쟁이에게 찾아오셔서 대뜸 하시는 말씀이 큰 용사여 하신다. 우리는 힘과 용기를 가져야겠다. 아무리 겁 많고, 연약하고, 부족하고, 소심한 자라고 해도 하나님께서 함께 하시면 용사가 될 수 있다. 이것이 하나님의 법칙이다. 아무리 부족하고 천하다고 하더라도 하나님께서 함께하시면 그는 존귀하고 힘 있고 용기있는 자가 된다. 이게 하나님의 법칙이다. 이 법칙만 잡는다면 어디가서도 승리할 수 있다. 기드온이 승리한 비결이 무엇인가. 강한 리더쉽이 있었는가. 안그러면 기가막힌 전술을 썼는가. 절대 아니었다. 비결은 딱 하나였다. 말씀을 믿었다. 오직 그리스도, 오직 믿음이었다. 말씀이 그렇다니까 한 것이다. 그렇게 용사가 된 것이다. 모든 문제 해결은 믿음에 있는 것이지 다른 어떤 방법이 있는 것이 아니다. 그런데 이 믿음에는 비결이 있다.

3. 하나님이 찾으시는 믿음

1) 믿음의 비결

첫번째는 삿 6:21 말씀에 여호와의 사자가 염소새끼 고기와 무교병을 태우는 사건이 나온다.

삿 6:21 여호와의 사자가 손에 잡은 지팡이 끝을 내밀어 고기와 무교전병에 대매 불이 반석에서 나와 고기와 무교전병을 살랐고 여호와의 사자는 떠나서 보이지 아니한지라

이 기드온이 첫번째 하나님 앞에서 인정을 받았던 것이 이 사건이었다. 무교병은 죄 없으신 그리스도를 나타낸다. 어린 염소고기는 대속의 죄물되신 그리스도를 나타낸다. 기드온이 믿음을 잡았는데 그 믿음이 바로 그리스도를 붙잡은 믿음이었다. 기드온이 두번째 한 것이 있다.

삿 6:32 그 날에 기드온을 여룹바알이라 불렀으니 이는 그가 바알의 제단을 파괴하였으므로 바알이 그와 더불어 다툴 것이라 함이었더라

많은 이스라엘 백성들이 아세라 신과 바알 신을 섬기고 있었다. 그것을 밤에 찾아가서 불태웠다. 그들이 섬겼던 우상을 파괴했다. 이것이 대단히 중요하다. 우리가 응답받기 위해서는 우리에게 있는 우상을 다 파괴해야한다. 우상 제단을 파괴시키고 난 다음에 성령께서 기드온에게 임하셨다. 세번째는 전쟁에서 나타난 일이다.

삿 7:20 세 대가 나팔을 불며 항아리를 부수고 왼손에 횃불을 들고 오른손에 나팔을 들어 불며 외쳐 이르되 여호와와 기드온의 칼이다 하고

불을 항아리에 넣어서 보이지 않게 하다가 갑자기 깨드리니까 불이 환하게 밝혔다. 이 빛은 빛되신 그리스도를 나타낸다. 나팔을 불며 외쳤다. 그리스도의 능력을 선포했다. 믿음을 잡는데 무슨 오직의 믿음이냐. 그리스도이다. 그리스도께서 모든 문제를 해결해주신 것을 붙잡고 나가게될 때 승리하게 된다. 그래서 이 기드온이 받은 응답이 여호수아처럼 전무후무한 응답을 받게 되었다.

2) 전무후무한 응답

3백 명으로 13만 5천 명을 죽인다는 것을 전무후무한 응답이다. 그렇다면 이 전무후무한 응답이 어디서부터 시작되었는가. 이스라엘에 왜 이런 문제가 생기기 시작했는지 부터 보아야겠다. 그 원인이 무엇인지 보는 눈이 있어야 한다. 당연히 있을 수 밖에 없는 일이었다.

삿 6:1 이스라엘 자손이 또 여호와의 목전에 악을 행하였으므로 여호와께서 칠 년 동안 그들을 미디안의 손에 넘겨 주시니

그들에게 왔던 고통은 순식간에 와서 곡식을 뺴앗긴 것이 아니라 원래부터 하나님을 불순종해서 생겼던 문제에서 왔다. 하나님께서 미디안 백성 가운데 살게 하신 것을 그들을 살리기 위함이었다. 그랬다면 큰 축복을 받을 수 있었을텐데 오히려 우상에 빠지고 동화되시 시작했다. 그 때 그들이 부르짖기 시작했다. 하나님은 항상 우리에게 응답을 주실 준비를 하고 계시다는 것을 꼭 잡아야한다. 문제가 생겼을 때 우리에게 필연적으로 있어야 할 것이 삿 6:6에 나오는 부르짖는 기도이다.

삿 6:6 이스라엘이 미디안으로 말미암아 궁핍함이 심한지라 이에 이스라엘 자손이 여호와께 부르짖었더라.

기드온이 응답받는 원인은 그들의 부르짖는 기도를 통해서 나타났다. 우리에게 귀중한 메세지를 주신다. 문제 있으신가. 감당할 수 없는 문제를 갖고계신다. 그 문제를 잡고 24시 기도에 들어가시기 바란다. 우리에게는 두 가지 기도 방법이 있다. 신분을 누리는 기도와 권세를 누리는 기도가 있다. 신분을 누리는 기도는 간구하는 기도이다. 문제를 해결해주옵소서 하는 기도이다. 권세 기도는 바로 명령기도이다. 그래서 가문에 있는 모든 흑암과 저주의 문제를 놓고 명령 기도를 하시라. 24시 기도에 들어가시기 바란다. 권세기도를 24시 하시기 바란다. 틀림없이 흑암이 무너지게 될 것이다. 그리고 삿 7:22에 놀라운 장면이 나타난다.

삿 7:22 그 날에 기드온을 여룹바알이라 불렀으니 이는 그가 바알의 제단을 파괴하였으므로 바알이 그와 더불어 다툴 것이라 함이었더라

이것은 초자연적인 역사이다. 기드온이 전에 경험하지 못한 전무후무한 응답이었다. 왜 이것을 주시는가. 하나님의 절대 계획이기 때문이다. 우리가 하나님께 부르짖으면 반드시 우리에게 크신 응답을 주실 것이다. 그러면 그 응답으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 그 응답을 통해서 하나님께서 나를 행한 계획이 있으시다. 그 계획 때문에 주신 것을 붙잡아야한다. 그것이 절대 계획을 붙잡는 것이다. 승리하시는 여러분 되시기 바란다.

결론

렘 33:2일을 행하시는 여호와, 그것을 만들며 성취하시는 여호와, 그의 이름을 여호와라 하는 이가 이와 같이 이르시도다.

여러분들에게 생긴 일은 하나님께서 허락하신 일이다. 왜 그런가. 그것을 통해서 영광을 받으시기 위해서 허락하셨다.

렘 33:3 너는 내게 부르짖으라 내가 네게 응답하겠고 네가 알지 못하는 크고 은밀한 일을 네게 보이리라

전무후무한 응답을 갖고 기다리고 계신다. 이 응답받는 여러분 되시기를 예수님 이름으로 축원한다.

“And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets.”

Introduction

In New York University Hospital, there was a doctor who wrote a book called, “When I Turn Five.” There was a 4 year old girl who came to the emergency room and she had a brain tumor and a stroke that caused a brain hemorrhage. There was no chance for survival for this little girl but thankfully, the surgery went well and she was able to regain consciousness. The child had a bandage wrapped around her head and you could see her eyes, and her eyes looked very lively. The doctor would visit the girl and tell her of his dreams. She said that when she turns 5 years old, she will learn how to jump rope and read comic books just like her brother. She would always lively tell the doctor regarding her dreams and when the doctor saw this, the doctor thought that it would be really hard for her to get to 5 years old because of her health complications. But that girl was able to not break down in the end and did not fall into despair, and she was always hopeful and optimistic. As a specialized doctor, medically speaking, said that this girl had no hope for survival but this girl miraculously was able to recover fully. From what I heard, this little girl is still alive and healthy after 25 years. When the doctor saw the little girl, he was able to learn a lot from her. No matter how advanced medicine and science is, there are always limitations. What is impossible, sometimes there is hope and miracles that do happen. The doctor had no chance but to stand humbly before his patients because of this realization. Today God has given us a precious message. Today’s message is about prayer. Every Bible verse is so precious in the book of Judges so I want to share it with you. When I look at the book of Judges, I was able to hear God’s voice of important realizations.

1. Workers that God Looks For

1) The suffering of the people

Verse 32 - Through Moses and Joshua, God used them to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. When they entered Canaan and Joshua died, the Israelites strangely returned back to the life of idol worship. When we don’t hear the gospel, we have no choice but to return back to the wicked and evil ways.

Judges 6:1, 6, 12 “Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years, 6 So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord.12 And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, 'The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!’ ”- When God saw His people like that, this is what He said. When I read this Bible verse, I was able to realize many things. Even despite all of the works of God in Exodus from Egypt, God punished His people for their wickedness but only for 7 years. Even despite all of the people’s wickedness, He didn’t eternally punish or condemn them to death but He only punished them for 7 years and then blessed them. For 7 years, what is the meaning of this duration?

The meaning is shown in Judges 6:6. The Midianites came upon the Israelites and would steal all of their food and crops during the time of harvest. The Israelites had nothing left to eat. After the Israelites worked really hard to harvest all of their food, the Midianites would come and steal all of their food so the Israelites would be left to starve to death. Because of this, the Israelites would have no choice but to suffer and look up to God. When they were worshiping idols, they didn’t look up to God at all but when they were suffering, they had no choice but to look up to God. God calculated 7 years because He knew that this was how long it would take for the Israelites to return to God. When people suffer and experience hardships, the hope that God gives His people is to look up to God during times of desperation and when they have nothing else to turn to. But, when God hears our yearnings and mercies, God answers and comes to us. God is glad when we finally realize and seek after God during times of hardships and problems.

When God heard the prayers of Israelites seeking after Him, God answered their prayers in Judges 6:12. I am sure many people prayed to God but the angel of God came to Gideon and answered his prayer. Why did God choose Gideon out all of the Israelites? There is a type of worker that God seeks after.

2) The worker that God looks for

Judges 6:15, 16 “So he said to Him, 'O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.' 16 And the Lord said to him, 'Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.' ”- God promised that He will work through Gideon but when Gideon heard this, he said that he couldn’t do the work of God because he is weak and lacking. The worker that God seeks after all he time is the one who is humble and pure. Not people who are calculative but those who are humble and pure. When you look at Moses, after 80 years, God commanded Moses to take His people out of Egypt and that God will use Moses. When Moses heard this, he told God that he couldn’t do that because he was lacking. When God heard Moses’ reply, God promised Moses that He would be with him. When Moses was intelligent and powerful in the palace, God probably wouldn’t have used him. After 80 years and when he was old and frail, God came to Moses and told him that God will use him. Remnants, keep this in mind. When Saul became King, he was also very humble and pure as well. But God stopped using Saul when he became arrogant. Look at David and also the 12 disciples. The 12 disciples had nothing and they were just fishermen. But because God was with them, they became well respected people.

Gideon was a very humble man and gave a very humble response to God, God replied in Judges 6:16. God was glad that He promised that He will be with those who are weak and shows His glory through that. Hold onto this. Some humble people can be very lacking but God starts raising them up.

3) God uses the humble to the end

Judges 6:17-18, 21, 37 “Then he said to Him, 'If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who talk with me. 18 Do not depart from here, I pray, until I come to You and bring out my offering and set it before You.' And He said, 'I will wait until you come back.' 21 Then the Angel of the Lord put out the end of the staff that was in His hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire rose out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. And the Angel of the Lord departed out of his sight. 37 look, I shall put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said.” - Gideon responds in this Bible verse. Gideon asked God to give him evidence through the offering that Gideon offers to God. Gideon brings a young calf before God and in Judges 6:21 - The Angel of God made the sacrifice with fire. This was showing the presence of God. When Gideon saw this, he was able to realize that this indeed was God and His presence. What God told Gideon, this was not the words of man but it was God’s works. God was giving Gideon assurance of this. But a great army of Midianites were surround Israel, even though Gideon heard the words of God, he started becoming doubtful of God’s words. He apologized God and asked God to show once again that God was with him.

Judges 6:37 - This request will show that God will allow Gideon to win the war. It happened exactly as Gideon requested. When Gideon saw this, he should’ve acknowledged God’s presence and word but he asked God once again to saw another work. Gideon asked God to make it dry now. God did not get angry but He did exactly what Gideon asked and was patient towards him. When Gideon saw this, he finally was assured and told the Israelites that God was with them and will help them in this war. There were only 30,000 Israelites who came to fight the war and this was nothing compared to the 130,000 Midianite soldiers. God told Gideon that 30,000 soldiers is too much and asked Gideon to reduce the number of soldiers.

2. The War that God Looks For

1) God's war

God commanded Gideon in Judges 7:3. Judges 7:3, 7, 9 “Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained. 7 Then the Lord said to Gideon, 'By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place.' 9 It happened on the same night that the Lord said to him, 'Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.' ” - God commanded the Israelites that anyone who was fearful to leave and not to participate the war. The people who left the war were 23,000 and only 10,000 remained. But God once again said that 10,000 was still too much. God commanded the Israelites to drink the water from the river. God commanded them to differentiate between those who sunk their heads in the water and those who drank from the water with their hands. Those who drank the water with their hands, there were 300 soldiers and Gods said that this was enough soldiers to come before the Midianites.

Judges 7:9 - Before Gideon went into war, God gave them the mystery and answer of victory in advance. This is very important. When we experience problems God gives us the word of God, this is His answer in advance. The moment God gives you an answer, the war is over and our fight is over. When Gideon went to war, all he needed to do was confirm God's word in the field. The 300 soldiers went against the 130,000 Midianite soldiers. They weren’t almighty and brave people but they were fearful in the beginning, Gideon was a coward. He was actually hiding when the Midianites first came for the war. We need to have courage even if we are lacking and weak because God is with us. This is God’s law.

2) God's law

No matter how lacking and weak we are, if God is with us, then we become the most brave and strongest person.this is God’s law. If we just hold onto God’s law, then we will be victorious wherever we go. The mystery of how Gideon was victorious, it wasn’t because he had great tactics or was strong, he only had one mystery. He believed in the word of God. He had only faith. He just went out with the word of God. That is why he was forgiven by God. All answers are found in our faith. There is a mystery within faith that we must see and know.

3. The Kind of Faith that God Looks For

1) The mystery of faith

The angel of God caused the sacrifice to burn in fire. The first acknowledgement by God towards Gideon was this event. The unleavened bread was representing Jesus Christ. The meat of the young lamb was representing the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. What Gideon held onto was faith. The second thing that Gideon did was Judges 6:32.

Judges 6:21, 32, 7:20 “Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, 'Let Baal plead against him, because he has torn down his altar.' 7:20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers—they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing—and they cried, ;The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!' ” - Israelites were worshiping the idol, Baal, Gideon destroyed all of the idols. This is very important. In order to receive answers, we must break down the diols in our lives. After you break down your own idols, then the Holy Spirit will work. The third event was in the field.

Judges 7:20 - The light of God was shown. The light was representing the light of Jesus Christ. They proclaimed the sword of God, then were proclaiming Jesus Christ. When you hold onto faith, you hold onto the faith of Jesus Christ alone. When we hold onto Jesus Christ as our only answer to all problems and go out to the fields, answers will come to us. Just like Moses, Gideon received the unprecedented answer. With 300 men alone he was able to defeat 130,000 Midianites. This was impossible.

2) The unprecedented answer

When did the unprecedented answers start? We need to first see why problems started for the Israelites in the beginning. What was the cause for the problem? It was of course, these problems had no choice but to come upon them.

The reason is seen in Judges 6:1, 6 “Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years, 6 So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord.” - They were worshiping idols. they disobeyed God’s word in the beginning so this caused problems to start and occur. The problems didn’t start for no reason. That is why God gave the mission for Gideon to save the Israelites from idol worship. They could’ve received great blessing to save the Midianites but the Israelites fell into idol worship. When they were attacked by Midianites, the Israelites started calling out to God. God is always ready to give us answers. What must we do to receive answers?

We must just call out to God as seen in Judges 7:22 “When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.” - The reason why Gideon received answers was because he called out to God in pity and for God’s mercy. This is a very important message. Do you have problems that you cannot bear? Hold onto the problem and enter into 24 hour prayer. There are two methods to receive answers. The prayer of enjoying our status and the second type of prayer of enjoying our authority. Enjoying our authority is authoritative prayer. Authoritative prayer is praying in the name of Jesus Christ. Enter into prayer 24 hours a day. Then absolutely answers will come and darkness will break down.

Judges 7:22 - The answer of unprecedented answers was given to Gideon. God gave these answers because God had an absolute plan. God will absolutely give us answers if we come before him. Because God has a plan for us, we must hold out the reasons. May you be victorious.

Conclusion

Hold onto Jeremiah 33:2-3 “This is what the Lord says, he who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is his name: 3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ ” - This is very absolute. Everything that happens in your life, God allows them. Why is that? Through them God can be glorified. Jeremiah 33:2-3 - Hold onto the unprecedented answer and wait.
