“네 이웃에 대하여 거짓 증거하지 말라” (출애굽기 20:16)

서론 Introduction

마틴 루터가 인간의 본성에 대하여 이야기했다. 그분이 말씀하시기를, 사람은 누구나 공통적으로 이웃에 대해 좋은 말보다 나쁜 것을 듣기를 원한다. 이러한 악한 본성을 누구나 가지고 있다고 한다. 또 자신이 악할지라도 자기에 대해 누가 나쁜 말을 하면 참지 못한다. 뿐만 아니라 자기를 향해 온 세상이 칭찬하기를 원하면서 누군가가 남을 칭찬하는 것은 듣기 싫어하고 참지 못한 채 한마디 한다고 한다. 이것이 마틴 루터가 말한 인간의 본성이다. 여러분은 어떠신가? 여러분 가운데도 이러한 본성이 있으신가? 이것은 정상이 아니다. 바로 이러한 본성이 사탄에게 붙잡혀 있다는 증거이다. 그러나 불신자뿐만 아니라 믿는 사람들도 여전히 이러한 본성을 가진 채 살아가기도 한다. 

1.제 9 계명의 의미 The Meaning of the Ninth Commandment

(1) 계명을 주신 배경 The Background of the Commandment

출 Exodus 20:16,

요 John 8:44, 창 Genesis 3:5, 요 John 8:32 

이러한 인간의 본성을 치유하기 위해 하나님은 이번 제9계명을 주셨다. 오늘 말씀인 "이웃에 대하여 거짓 증거하지 말라" 는 말씀을 잘 들어야 하는 이유이다. 거짓말은 마음과 생각에서 나오게 되어 있다. 내 마음속에 그런 생각이 든다는 것은 타락한 본성이 아직 있다는 말이다. 어째서 이런 것인가? 성경 요 8:44에 보면, "진리가 그 속에 없으므로 진리에 서지 못하고 거짓을 말할 때마다 제 것으로 말하나니 이는 그가 거짓말쟁이요 거짓의 아비가 되었음이라" 라고 있다. 마귀에 대해 지금 설명하고 있는 것이다. 그 속에는 진리 자체가 없다고 말하고 있다. 진리가 없으니 말하는 모든 것이 거짓일 수밖에 없다. 그래서 마귀를 거짓말쟁이요 거짓의 아비라고 한다. 마귀 자체가 거짓말의 원천이라는 의미이다. 그러나 마귀는 때로는 광명의 천사로 가장하여 이야기한다. 아담과 하와에게도 광명의 천사로 위장하여 속였다. 창세기 3:5, "너희가 그것을 먹는 날에는 너희 눈이 밝아져 하나님과 같이 되어 선악을 알 줄 하나님이 아심이니라". 마귀 속에는 진리가 없으니 말하는 것이 거짓인 것이다. 하나님 말씀에 대해 거짓 증언을 하는 것이다. "네가 선악과를 먹으면 하나님처럼 될 것이다" 라고 거짓말한 것에 속아 아담과 하와는 선악과를 먹음으로써 하나님의 말씀의 진리를 놓쳤다. 하나님의 말씀을 버리고 마귀의 말을 들음으로 그들의 아버지가 바뀌게 되었다. 하나님의 자녀가 마귀의 자녀의 신분으로 바뀌게 된 것이다. 그렇게 하나님의 본성에서 마귀의 본성을 가지게 된 것이다. 그렇다면 이것을 어떻게 해결해야 하는가? 주님께서 이에 대한 정확한 해답을 주셨다. 요 8:32, "진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라". 우리가 마귀에게 붙잡혀 있다 하더라도 진리를 알게 되면 그 진리가 그것에서 너를 자유케 할 것이라는 말이다. 다시 말해, 우리가 악한 본성을 가지고 있다 할지라도 충분히 말씀을 통해 치유가 가능하다는 말이다. 제9계명을 통해 주신 말씀은 곧 우리에게 진리를 찾으라는 축복의 말씀인 것이다. 회복할 수 있는 길이 있다는 말씀이다. 

(2) 계명의 내용 The Content of the Commandment

왕상 1 Kings 21:10, 행 Acts 5:3:4, 얍 James 1:15-16 

그렇다면 9계명의 내용을 자세히 보아야겠다. “거짓증거” 라고 했는데, 이 "거짓”이라는 단어로 히브리어 "샤케르” 가 사용되었다. 사실과 다른 것을 의미한다. 또 “증거” 에는 히브리 단어 “에드” 가 사용되었다. 어떤 것이 맞다고 확인시켜 주는 것을 말한다. 지금 하나님께서는 거짓을 확인시키는 일을 하지 말라고 하시는 것이다. 제9계명은 단순히 거짓말하지 말라는 말씀이 아니다. 물론 거짓말을 하면 안 된다. 그런데 더 자세히 보면 거짓 "증거" 를 하지 말라고 했다. 법정 재판 과정에서 나타나는 행위를 말하는 것이다. 너희들이 가서 거짓 증언하고 다니는데, 그것을 하지 말라고 하는 말씀이다. 사실을 진실인냥 다니면서 확인시켜 주고 있는 모습이다. 왜 이런 거짓 증거를 하는가? 재산 혹은 생명에 관해 어떠한 두려움이나 위협이 오게 되면 거짓 증거를 하기도 한다. 또 내가 손해 보는 상황에서 거짓을 증거하기도 한다. 그런 증거를 하지 말아라’ 하는 말씀이다. 이에 대표적인 예로 왕상 21:10 이세벨의 이야기가 있다. 이세벨이 나봇의 포도밭을 빼앗기 위해 악한 일을 행한다. "불량자 두 사람을 그의 앞에 마주 앉히고 그에게 대하여 증거하기를 네가 하나님과 왕을 저주하였다고 하게 하고 곧 그를 끌고 나가서 돌로 쳐 죽이라 하였더라." 포도밭을 빼앗기 위해 장로들과 귀족들을 불러 명한다. 이들에게 불량자를 불러서 나봇이 하나님과 왕을 모독했다고 거짓 증거하라고 명령한다. 그렇게 아무 죄도 없는 나봇이 포도밭을 빼앗기고 돌에 맞아 죽게 된다. 거짓 증거를 하도록 계략을 꾸민 이세벨, 또 그 명령을 받들고 따른 장로와 귀족들, 그리고 실질적으로 이 모략을 행동으로 옮긴 불량자들 전부 다 거짓을 증거한 자라는 것이다. 이러한 악행에 가담한 모든 자들이 거짓 증거자인 것이다. 

그렇다면 우리가 거짓 증거를 하는 근본적인 이유를 알아야겠다. 사도행전 5:3-4에 아나니아와 삽비라가 밭을 팔아서 일부를 남겨 놓고 베드로에게 준다. 이에 베드로가 아나니아에게 말한다, "베드로가 이르되 아나니아야 어찌하여 사탄이 네 마음에 가득하여 네가 성령을 속이고 땅값 얼마를 감추었느냐". 그러면서 하는 이야기가, "어찌하여 이 일을 네 마음에 두었느냐 사람에게 거짓말한 것이 아니요 하나님께로다". 이렇듯 사람들은 하나님의 살아 계신 사실을 망각한 채 거짓을 말한다. 안다고 해도 크게 의식하지 않은 채 쉽게 거짓말하고 스스로를 속인다. 분명히 알아야 할 것은 사람은 속을 수 있으나 성령님은 절대 속지 않으신다는 사실이다. 욕심에 넘어가 하나님이 살아 계신 것을 망각하고 외면한 채 거짓을 증언하는 것이다. 이에 9계명은 네가 모든 일에 하나님이 살아 계심을 인정하고 의식하고 살라고 말한다. 약 1:15-16에 또 중요한 말씀이 나온다, "욕심이 잉태한즉 죄를 낳고 죄가 장성한즉 사망을 낳느니라 16 내 사랑하는 형제들아 속지 말라". 사람이 망하는 것이 욕심 때문이라고 한다. 정치인, 권세자들이 이런 식으로 거짓말한다. 돈을 얻기 위해 남을 속이기도 한다. 이것만 가지면 큰 명예와 부를 갖게 될 거라 하고 타협한다. 이것이 바로 사탄의 전략이라는 말이다. 사탄은 이렇게 마음과 생각을 속인다. 아무도 모를 거라고 우리를 속이고 하나님이 보시는 앞에 거짓을 행하게 한다. 하나님께서는 모든것을 보고 계심을 우리가 의식 하며 살아야한다.

2. 제 9 계명의 핵심 The Core of the Ninth Commandment

(1) 핵심 메시지 The core message

수 Joshua 2:4, 6:25, 2:9

출 Exodus 1:19-21 

제9계명에 있는 핵심 내용을 우리가 붙잡는 것이 중요하다. 거짓말하지 말라, 거짓 증언하지 말라는 말의 핵심 메시지는 결국, 너희 인간의 기준과 하나님의 기준은 다르다는 것이다. 두 가지 예를 들겠다. 기생 라합이 이스라엘 정탐꾼들을 숨겨 주었다. 나중에 군대가 찾아와 이 정탐꾼들이 어디 있느냐고 묻는다. 그때 라합이 한 말이 여호수아 2:4에 나온다, "그 여인이 그 두 사람을 이미 숨긴지라 이르되 과연 그 사람들이 내게 왔었으나 그들이 어디에서 왔는지 나는 알지 못하였고". 라합이 정탐꾼을 숨기고 거짓을 말한 것이다. 그런데, 여호수아서 6:25에 보면, "여호수아가 기생 라합과 그의 아버지의 가족과 그에게 속한 모든 것을 살렸으므로" 라고 나온다. 분명히 거짓 증거를 했으면 하나님이 책망하셔야 마땅한데 그 거짓말로 아버지의 가족과 그에 속한 모든 것을 살렸다고 하는 것이다. 그러면 이 계명이 틀리게 되는 것이 아닌가? 또 한 가지 예를 드리겠다. 출애굽기 1:19-21을 보면 모세 시대에 산파들이 바로왕의 명을 거역하는 내용이 나온다. 자국의 노예인 이스라엘 백성들의 수가 나날이 늘어가는 것을 견제한 바로왕이 산파들에게 새로 태어나는 이스라엘 아기 중에 남자는 전부 죽이라고 명령한다. 그런데 한 산파가 이 명령을 거역하고 남자아이인 모세를 살린다. 이를 알게 된 바로가 그 산파에게 어찌하여 명령을 따르지 않았느냐고 묻는다. 출 1:19 에 이 산파가 바로에게 "산파가 바로에게 대답하되 히브리 여인은 애굽 여인과 같지 아니하고 건장하여 산파가 그들에게 이르기 전에 해산하였더이다 하매 “라며 거짓을 답한다. 그런데 출애굽기 1:20을 보면 후에 하나님이 이 산파들에게 은혜를 베풀었다고 나온다. 거짓말을 했는데 하나님이 은혜를 베푸신 것이다. 이것을 우리가 어떻게 해석해야 하는가? 성경을 보면 이런 사람들을 축복하신 이유가 나온다. 여호수아 6:25에 라합을 통해 그녀의 가족이 살게 되었는데 그 이유가 "여호수아가 여리고를 정탐하려고 보낸 사자들을 숨겼음이었더라". 하나님이 그녀를 축복하신 이유가 여리고에 보내신 정탐꾼들을 거짓을 말함으로 숨겼기 때문이라는 것이다. 분명 거짓말을 했는데 정탐꾼을 숨긴 것 때문에 오히려 은혜를 받은 것이다. 수 2:9에 라합이 정탐꾼들을 숨긴 이유가 나온다. 이것이 곧 하나님이 축복하신 이유이다, "말하되 여호와께서 이 땅을 너희에게 주신 줄을 내가 아노라 우리가 너희를 심히 두려워하고 이 땅 주민들이 다 너희 앞에서 간담이 녹나니". 라합은 이스라엘 사람들이 들어와 가나안 땅을 점령할 것을 미리 안 것이다. 라합은 그 사실을 믿고 확신했기 때문에 두려움에 살기 위해서 이렇게 거짓 증거를 한 것이다. 그녀가 살게 된 이유가 바로 정확한 하나님의 언약을 알고 하나님을 경외하였기 때문이라는 말이다. 마찬가지로 산파들이 축복받은 이유도 출애굽기 1:21에 "여호와를 경외함으로" 살았다고 나온다. 바로왕보다 여호와 하나님을 더 두려워한 것이다. 그 두려움에 아이들을 죽이지 않았고 하나님은 그의 집안을 흥황하게 하신다. 여기서 아주 중요한 포인트가 나온다. 사람들의 판단 기준은 거짓말하는 행위 그 자체에 있지만, 하나님의 판단 기준은 하나님의 언약 성취 속에 있느냐 아니면 그 언약을 방해하는 쪽에 있느냐에 있다. 하나님의 언약의 성취를 위한 쪽으로 모든 방향을 맞출 때 하나님은 모든 은혜와 축복을 주신다. 세상의 윤리와 도덕, 법, 이 모든 것을 초월하는 것이 바로 하나님의 언약의 성취의 법이다. 그리스도를 통해 생명을 구원하시고자 하는 이 생명의 법을 기준으로 모든 것을 이끌어 나가시는 하나님이다. "그런즉 너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라" (마 6:33). 하나님을 경외하면서 하나님의 언약 속으로 들어가 하나님의 것을 선택하는 그 순간에 하나님께서 그를 축복하시고 보호하시며 인도하신다는 말이다. 세상의 법을 따르는 것 위에 하나님의 법을 따르는 것이 얼마나 중요한가, 우리가 이를 통해 알 수 있는 것이다. 

(2) 치유 메시지 The healing message

롬 Romans 1:29-30, 32, 전 Ecclesiastes 10:20, 마 Matthew 10:28, 사 Isaiah 41:10 

여기서 더 중요한 것을 잡아야겠다. 롬 1:29 에 악한 자에 대해 자세히 말한다, "곧 모든 불의, 추악, 탐욕, 악의가 가득한 자요 시기, 살인, 분쟁, 사기, 악독이 가득한 자요 수군수군하는 자요 비방하는 자요 하나님께서 미워하시는 자요 능욕하는 자요 교만한 자요 자랑하는 자요 악을 도모하는 자요 부모를 거역하는 자요". 수군수군은 곧 가십, 험담하고 뒤에서 남을 헐뜯는 것을 말한다. 또 비방하는 자들을 "슬랜더" 라고 표현한다. 명예를 훼손시키고, 중상모략을 하는 자들을 말한다. 로마서 1:32, "그들이 이 같은 일을 행하는 자는 사형에 해당한다고 하나님께서 정하심을 알고도 자기들만 행할 뿐 아니라 또한 그런 일을 행하는 자들을 옳다 하느니라." 하나님은 이렇듯 뒤에서 수군수군 대며 비방 하는 자들을 싫어하시고 이러한 행위들은 곧 사형감이라 정하셨다는 말이다. 사탄에게 속한 불신자들뿐만 아니라 믿는 자들도 이러한 행위를 하면서 산다. 그래서 이렇게 믿는 자들을 향해 제9계명을 주신 것이다. 너희들 형제끼리 이러한 거짓 증언을 하지 말라는 말씀이다. 이 9계명을 받는 대상은 하나님의 백성들, 곧 그의 자녀들이다. 곧 하나님의 자녀로 예수님과 한몸을 이룬 자들이다. 한몸 된 백성들끼리 뒤에서 수군수군 대거나 비방하는 짓을 하지 말라는 말씀이다. 전도서 10:20, "심중에라도 왕을 저주하지 말며 침실에서라도 부자를 저주하지 말라 공중의 새가 그 소리를 전하고 날짐승이 그 일을 전파할 것임이니라". 무슨 말씀인가? 우리가 행하고 말하는 모든 것 전부 다 하나님이 다 듣고 계시다는 말이다. 너희들 형제끼리 특히 입조심하라는 말이다. 말하기 전에 살아 계신 하나님이 다 듣고 보고 계심을 기억하라는 것이다. 또 우리가 붙잡을 것을 말씀하신다. 마 10:28, "몸은 죽여도 영혼은 능히 죽이지 못하는 자들을 두려워하지 말고 오직 몸과 영혼을 능히 지옥에 멸하실 수 있는 이를 두려워하라". 우리가 거짓말해서 피해를 입는 당사자들 또한 하나님이 너무나 사랑하시는 자녀들이다. 그러니까 모든 심판은 하나님 당신이 하실것이니 당신에게 맡기라 하시는 것이다. 사 41:10, "두려워하지 말라 내가 너와 함께 함이라 놀라지 말라 나는 네 하나님이 됨이라 내가 너를 굳세게 하리라 참으로 너를 도와 주리라 참으로 나의 의로운 오른손으로 너를 붙들리라". 우리는 사람을 속일 이유가 없다. 어떤 위기가 찾아오고 위험한 상황에 놓일지라도 하나님께서 우리와 함께 하시기 때문이다. 내가 네 하나님이니 너를 내가 굳세게 하겠다는 말이다. 어떤 상황이 온들 내가 함께하겠다 이 말씀이다. 그러니 내가 보는 앞에서 범죄하고 거짓을 증언하지 말고 떳떳한 인생을 살라는 말이다. 하나님께서 말씀하신다, "참으로 나의 의로운 오른손으로 너를 붙들리라." 지금 이 시간도 여러분을 붙들고 계신다. 근심걱정을 할 필요가 전혀 없다. 하나님이 그 어떤 일 속에도 오른손으로 붙들고 계신다. 

3. 참 복음을 아는 자 Those Who Know the True Gospel

(1) 복음의 능력 The Power of the Gospel

사 Isaiah 40:8 

그렇다면 참 복음을 아는 자는 어떻게 살아야 할까? 우리는 복음의 능력을 붙잡아야겠다. 사 40:8, 풀은 마르고 꽃은 시드나 우리 하나님의 말씀은 영원히 서리라 하라. 하나님의 언약의 말씀은 반드시 이루어진다. 

(2) 기도의 능력 The Power of Prayer

사 Isaiah 40:31 

이사야 40:31, "오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리가 날개치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비하지 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤하지 아니하리로다". 말씀을 붙잡고 기도하면 새 힘 주시겠다고 한다. 독수리가 날개침 같은 힘을 주시고 아무리 뛰어도 힘들지 않게 하신다는 말씀이다. 이 응답과 증인의 능력을 누리시기를 바란다. 

(3) 증인의 능력 The Power of a Witness

막 Mark 16:20 

막 16:20, "제자들이 나가 두루 전파할새 주께서 함께 역사하사 그 따르는 표적으로 말씀을 확실히 증언하시니라" 하나님의 증거가 언제 확실하게 나타나는가? 여러분이 복음을 가지고 증거할 때에 확실한 능력이 나타난다. 이 말씀을 굳게 잡으시기를 바란다. 

Conclusion

벧전 1 Peter 4:8 

말씀을 맺겠다. 벧전 4:8 말씀 꼭 붙잡으시라, "무엇보다도 뜨겁게 서로 사랑할지니 사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮느니라". 용서하지 못한, 혹은 해결받지 못한 죄문제가 있으신가? 사랑하시기를 바란다. 이 사랑이 무엇인가? 여기서 말하는 사랑은 영혼 사랑, 생명 구원을 위한 사랑을 말한다. 우리가 영혼을 정말로 사랑하고 생명 구원에 방향을 맞추어 나간다면 하나님은 그 어떤 죄도 용서하시고 언약 성취를 위해 나아가신다. 주님께서 우리에게 주신 마지막 사명이 무엇인가? "땅끝까지 증인 되리라" 는 그 언약의 말씀 붙잡고 영혼을 사랑하는 뜨거운 마음을 가질 때 하나님은 나의 어떤 허물도 덮으시고 다시 시작할 힘 주실 것이다. 큰 응답을 받는 여러분 되시기를 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 축원한다.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.  

Introduction

Martin Luther spoke about the human character and Luther said that people commonly desire to hear bad news about their neighbor rather than good news. Every human being possesses an evil nature and even if a person obtains an evil nature, he cannot tolerate when other people speak negatively about them. People only desire praise from other people. What is astounding is that when people praise another person, many people cannot tolerate praises about other people. Luther spoke about how this is human nature. How do you feel about this? Do you possess a character like this? This is not normal. This shows proof that we are controlled by Satan. Not only nonbelievers but many believers possess this character and nature. God who knows the nature of sin of mankind so He gave us the 10 commandments. What is the ninth commandment about? The ninth commandment was given to us to heal our nature. Lying comes from our heart and mind. If you possess this nature of lying means that you possess a corrupted and sinful nature. 

1. The Meaning of the Ninth Commandment

(1) The Background of the Commandment

John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” - This is talking about Satan. Within Satan, there is no truth in him. There is no truth in him, which means that he is always lying. That is why they call Satan a liar and a father of it. This means that Satan Himself is a lie and he is full of lies. But when Satan presented himself in front of people, he disguised himself as an angel. 

Genesis 3:5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” - Since there is no truth in Satan, he spoke only lies. Satan was giving lies to Adam and Eve about the word of God. Satan lied to Adam and Eve that if they ate the fruit of good and evil, they would become like God. The problem was that Adam and Eve believed in the lie of Satan and disobeyed God’s word. Adam and Eve had the word of God, the word of truth but they ended up being deceived by Satan, a being full of lies. This caused children of God to become children of Satan. This has caused our nature to change from the nature of God to the nature of Satan. Then, what should we do? 

God gave us an accurate and simple answer in John 8:32 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” - Even if you are bound by Satan, if you come to the truth then the truth will set you free. Even if we possess an evil and sinful nature, if we come to the word of God, then we will be set free and be healed. Through the ninth commandment, not bearing false witness means to come to the truth. There is a way for restoration. 

(2) The Content of the Commandment

When we bear witness, then we are witnessing and testifying towards the truth. God is commanding us not to bear false witness. The ninth commandment is not telling us not to lie but of course, we should not lie. The ninth commandment is telling us not to bear false witness against our neighbors. This is referring to bearing false witness in a court setting. People lie or be a false witness in court because people get afraid or fearful of the consequences. Or, people lie in court as well so that they can gain benefits and advantages for themselves. God is telling us not to do that. 

The prime question is seen in 1 Kings 21:10 “And seat two men, scoundrels, before him to bear witness against him, saying, “You have blasphemed God and the king.” Then take him out, and stone him, that he may die.” - Queen Jezebel wanted a vineyard so she committed an evil act to take and steal that vineyard from a man. In order to take that vineyard, Queen Jezebel calls elders and noblemen to have two men falsely testify against and accuse the vineyard owner of treason and blasphemy. As a result, it caused this innocent vineyard land owner to be falsely accused and stoned to death. This is what God is telling us not to be false witnesses like Queen Jezebel, the elders, and noblemen. 

Acts 5:3-4 “But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.’ ” - Ananias supposedly sold his land but hid some of those proceeds of the land for himself, and gave the remaining to Peter. When this happened, this is what Peter said to Ananias in Acts 5:3-4. Peter told Ananias that he didn’t lie to men but lied to God. When you lie to people, you lie because you don’t know that God is watching you. You may think that people don’t know that they are lying but what is absolute is that we can fool people but we cannot fool God. People are lying for their own benefit but God is saying that we should live a good conscience and live as if God is watching you. 

James 1:15-16 “Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.” - This is an important message. People fail because of their greed. Many people lie for their own benefits and greed. This is the strategy of Satan. People lie so that they can gain benefits and advantages for themselves but this is all part of Satan’s strategy. They think it is okay because they think that God is not watching but God is always watching. This is Satan’s strategy to get into your heart and mind, and make you lie to people around you. This ninth commandment is a warning from God. The reality and truth is, God is always watching you. 

2. The Core of the Ninth Commandment

(1) The core message

We must hold onto the fact that our standards and God’s standards are completely different things. Let me give you two examples. 

Let me give you the example of Rahab in Joshua 2:4, 6:25, 2:9 “Then the woman took the two men and hid them. So she said, 'Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 6:25 And Joshua spared Rahab the harlot, her father’s household, and all that she had. So she dwells in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.' 2:9 and said to the men: 'I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you.' ” - When the spies came, Rahab hid the spies and lied when people came looking for the spies. Rahab lied and she should’ve been punished for lying but God spared and blessed her. Not only that but God spared and blessed Rahab’s entire family as well. This is opposite of what was said will happen if we lie. 

Let me give you another example in Exodus 1:19-21 “And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.” 20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. 21 And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.” - The Israelites were having many children so when Pharaoh saw this, Pharaoh commanded that all male Israelite babies be killed. Pharaoh commanded for all of the midwives to kill all of the male Israelites babies. Pharaoh asked why the Israelite male babies were not being killed but the midwives replied to pharaoh and lied to him but God blessed the midwives even though they lied. How do we need to accept this? We need to look at the reason why God blessed them when they were lying. 

Joshua 6:25 - The reason why they were blessed was because Rahab hid the spies in Jericho. Why did she hide the spies? 

The reason is seen in Joshua 2:9 - This is why Rahab was blessed by God. Rahab knew that the Israelites were going to take over Jericho so she became afraid and wanted to live. But most importantly, Rahab feared God and knew of the covenant of God. 

Exodus 1:21 - The reason why the midwives were blessed was because they feared God. They feared God more than they feared pharaoh. Because they feared God, they didn’t kill the male Israelite babies. There is an important point here. The standard of man is that they focus on if you lie or not. That is the wrong question. What is God’s standard of judgment? God’s standard of judgment is whether you are in the covenant or not. Are you blocking God’s covenant or not? Is your entire direction towards God’s covenant or not. It is not about our benefits and advantages, we need to focus on fulfilling God’s covenant. God’s plan is to fulfill His covenant. 

Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” - When you enter into God’s covenant and enter into what God desires, then God will bless you. Are you following the law of God or the law of this world? This is what is most important. 

(2) The healing message

Romans 1:29-30, 32 “Being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.” - This is talking about liars and evil people. People who whisper are people who gossip all the time and judge others. But people who participate in all of these evil acts, God said that they are deserving of death. Those who gossip, judge, and criticize other people behind their backs; God said that these people who do this, then you deserve death. God said that this is not only applying to nonbelievers but also to believers as well. As believers of God, that is why God gave us the ninth commandment. God is commanding believers to not lie in front of your brothers and sisters. The ninth commandment was given to the children of God, the people of the covenant. As children of God, we are one body with God. As people of God, we should not gossip, be backbiters, haters of God, or judge your brothers and sisters in Christ. 

Ecclesiastes 10:20 “Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; For a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter.” - This means that what we say or think, God knows and hears all of that. As people of God, we should be careful with our words and actions. We should always be aware and know that God is always listening and watching everything. 

Matthew 10:28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” - Those who bear false witness against your neighbors, God loves everyone so we should change our mentality and heart. Because God is the ultimate judge so leave it to God to judge. 

Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” - There is no need to lie to other people. No matter what situation we are in, there is no need for us to lie. God is our God and does not fear. No matter what situation we are in, God will help us. In front of God, don’t lie and sin but live boldly. God is telling us that He will uphold us with His righteous right hand. God is holding onto you right now so do not fear or worry. No matter what happens, God will uphold you with His righteous right hand. 

3. Those Who Know the True Gospel

(1) The Power of the Gospel

Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” - The word of God will be fulfilled no matter what. If the we hold onto the truth of the word then we will absolutely have victory. 

(2) The Power of Prayer

Isaiah 40:31 “But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” - Hold onto the word of God and pray then God promised us new strength. God promises us the strength of an eagle to the point where if we run, we will not grow weary and when we walk, we will not grow faint. Enjoy these answers in the name of Jesus Christ. 

(3) The Power of a Witness

Mark 16:20 “And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.” - When we hold onto the word of God and testify of it, then true power will come to us. When we testify of the gospel, then true works will arise. 

Conclusion

Hold onto 1 Peter 4:8 “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for ‘love will cover a multitude of sins.’ ” - Do you have a sin that you cannot forgive someone of? Love them. What is love? This is a love of eternal and everlasting love. If we truly love others then God will forgive that person’s sin no matter what. What was God’s last commandment to us? Jesus Christ commanded us to be the witness to the ends of the earth and if we possess fervent love for our neighbors, then God will take hold of you and forgive you of all of your sins.
