영혼의 구원에 이르는 믿음(히10:36-39)

서론

미국의 유명한 강철왕 앤드류 카네기에 대한 이야기이다. 카네기가 어릴 때 물건을 팔고다녔다. 어느 날 한 노인의 집에 방문하게 되었다. 그런데 그 집에 들어서자마자 벽에 걸려있는 큰 그림을 보고 감동을 받는다. 그림에는 황량한 해변 모래사장 위에 초라한 나룻배와 낡아빠진 노가 걸려있는 것을 본다. 그 그림이 하도 희한해서 가서 자세히 봤더니 글자가 써있었다. 그 믿에 반드시 밀물 때가 온다 하는 글이었다. 카네기는 그 글을 읽고 큰 감동을 받았다. 집에 와서도 그 글과 그림이 생각나서 잠을 잘 수 없었다. 그래서 다시 일어나서 그 집을 찾아갔다. 그리고 노인에게 간곡히 부탁했다. 만일에 세상을 떠나실 때 저 그림을 저한테 꼭 주셨으면 좋겠습니다 하고 부탁했다. 카네기의 소원이 받아들여졌던지 그 노인은 그 그림을 카네기에게 주었다. 그 그림을 받은 카네기는 자기 사무실 가운데에 항상 붙여놓았다. 그리고 그 그림과 글을 평생에 자기 인생을 좌우하는 견고한 생활 신조가 되었다고 한다. 항상 생각하기를 반드시 밀물의 때가 올 것이다. 반드시 때가 온다는 말이다. 그 안에는 최선을 다하면서 모든 것을 참고 이길 수 있었다.

1. 약속하신 것을 위해

1) 인내의 필요성

오늘 말씀이 대단히 중요하다. 지난 시간에는 로마의 박해 가운데서도 참고 승리했던 순교자들의 믿음을 봤었다.

히 10:36 너희에게 인내가 필요함은 너희가 하나님의 뜻을 행한 후에 약속하신 것을 받기 위함이라

너희가 인내가 필요하다는 것이다. 왜 그런가. 약속하신 상급을 받기 위해서는 인내가 필요하다. 이 땅에 사는 동안에 최선을 다하면서 인내하는 삶, 이것이 참다운 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 믿음이다.

마 24:13 그러나 끝까지 견디는 자는 구원을 얻으리라

왜 그런가. 이 악한 마귀는 다양한 방법으로 성도들을 넘어뜨리고 쓰러뜨리려고 한다. 때로는 핍박과 환란으로, 때로는 조롱으로, 상처를 통해서 믿음에서 떨어뜨리게 하려고 방해를 한다. 그래서 예수님께서 말씀하시기를 끝까지 견디는 자는 구원을 받게될 것이라고 하신다. 이러면 질문할 수 있다. 목사님 택함 받은 자들은 어차피 천국 갈 텐데 무엇을 견딥니까 할 수 있다. 과연 그럴까. 그럼 제가 질문해볼 수 있다. 당신이 택함 받았는지 안받았는지는 어떻게 하십니까. 자기 스스로가 택함 받았다고 생각할지라고 하나님은 아니라고 할 수 있다. 그러면 끝까지 견디는 자는 구원을 얻으리라 하시는 말씀은 무슨 말인가. 개혁주의 입장에서는 이렇게 생각할 수 있다. 끝까지 견디는 자가 택함 받는 자라는 것이다. 쉽게 넘어지고 포기하고 복음을 떠난 사람들은 영접을 했다고 하더라도 가짜라는 말이다. 다시 말씀 드리면 택함 받은 자들은 끝까지 견디면서 아름다운 열매를 맺는 사람들이다. 세상에 나오면 유명한 걸작품들을 보게되면 굉장히 큰 인내의 열매인 것을 볼 수 있다. 화가 다빈치가 최후의 만찬이라는 그림을 그렸다. 그런데 이 천재 화가 다빈치가 최후의 만찬 하나를 그리는데 8년이 걸렸다고 한다. 뿐만 아니라 그것을 그리기 위해서 2천번이나 스케치를 했다고 한다. 그 유명한 그림이 그냥 나온 것이 아니라 그렇게 갖은 각고를 거쳐가면서 나온 것이다. 또 그 작품 중 잘 아시는 모나리자가 있다. 간단히 그린 것이 아니라 4년이 걸렸다고 한다. 그런데 놀라운 사실은 그 그림을 그린 모델되는 여인은 그 그림을 위해서 4년 동안 같은 표정을 짓고 앉아있었다. 그리는 사람 뿐 아니라 그 모델까지도 놀라운 인내를 갖고 기다린 결과로 아름다운 그림이 나온 것이다. 그 인내의 결과는 기가막힌 걸작품으로 세상 많은 사람들에게 감동을 주고 있다.

살후 3:5 주께서 너희 마음을 인도하여 하나님의 사랑과 그리스도의 인내에 들어가게 하시기를 원하노라

여러분들이 이 땅에 살면서 우리가 구원 받은 자들은 반드시 예수님을 만나게 될 것이다. 저는 제 마음에 항상 걸리는 것이 예수님을 만나면 뭐라고 하지 하는 것이다. 만일에 우리 주님께서 너 그동안에 뭐했냐 하면 주님 저 이걸 했습니다 하고 이야기할게 있어야하는데 그것이 별로 없다. 이 세상에서 인내를 겪으면서 하나님 앞에 떳떳하게 나아갈 수 있는 우리가 되어야할 줄로 믿는다. 우리가 사는 목적이 무엇인가. 이 땅에 살면서 하나님 앞에 영광 돌리고 주님 앞에 갔을 때 잘했다 칭찬듣는 것이다. 오늘 주님께서는 37절에 말씀하신다.

2) 의인의 믿음

히 10:37 잠시 잠깐 후면 오실 이가 오시리니 지체하지 아니하시리라

이 말씀 보게되면 금방 내일 모레 오신다는 것 처럼 들리는데 그 말이 아니다. 분명한 것은 주님께서 실제로 반드시 온다는 것이다. 반드시 우리 눈 앞에 직접 그 분을 보게될 것이라는 말이다. 우리가 항상 이것을 생각해야한다. 언제 만나더라도 만날 수 있다는 확신을 갖고 살아야한다. 더 중요한 말씀을 하신다.

히 10:38 나의 의인은 믿음으로 말미암아 살리라 또한 뒤로 물러가면 내 마음이 그를 기뻐하지 아니하리라 하셨느니라

나의 의인은 믿음으로 말미암아 산다고 했다. 여기서 의인은 믿음으로 산다고 했다. 여기서 말씀하신 의인은 누구인가. 많은 세상의 의인들은 주님의 일을 하다가 면류관을 받는다. 여러분들도 천국에 가면 면류관을 많이 쓰게될 줄로 믿는다. 우리 장로님은 많은 면류관을 쓰고 싶다는 말씀을 들었다. 주님께서 얼마나 기뻐하시겠는가. 그 마음 자체를 하나님께서 기뻐하신다. 그런데 우리에게 면류관을 쓰이기 위해서 우리 주님께서는 가시 면류관을 쓰셨다. 왜 가시 면류관을 쓰셨는가. 우리가 하나님을 떠났기 때문이다. 떠나면 어떻게 되는가. 당장 마귀의 자녀가 된다. 그러면 고통 속에서 살 수 밖에 없다. 죄 가운데서 고통 가운데서 살다가 멸망당할 수 밖에 없는 것이 우리 인생이었다. 다시 말씀드리면 하나님 떠남을 통해서 일어난 모든 문제를 해결하기 위해서 주님께서 오셔서 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가셨다. 모든 문제를 완전히 해결하셨다는 증거로 부활하셨다. 이제는 그것을 믿는 자는 의인이 된다. 이 믿는 자는 바로 참을 수 있는 의인이 된다. 이 말씀이 대단히 중요한 말씀이다. 어떤 유혹과 어려움이 와도 그리스도 이름을 위해서 참고 영광 돌리는 자리에 들어갈 수 있다. 또 오늘 말씀에 뒤로 물러가면 내 마음이 그를 기뻐하지 아니하리라 하신다. 고통 당한다 해서 아이고 안되겠네 하고 돌아간다면 주님께서 기뻐하지 않으신다는 것이다. 이것을 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 구원받기 위해 주님께서 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가셨는데 우리가 위험을 당했을 때 다시 돌아서게 되면 아담과 하와가 하나님을 떠난 것 같은 똑같은 현상이 일어난다. 아담과 하와가 하나님을 떠남으로부터 그 순간에 마귀의 종노릇 하게 되었다. 우리가 뒤로 물러나는 순간에 마귀의 종노롯한다. 돌아가는 그 순간에 지옥 고통 속으로 들어간다.

2. 구원함에 이르는 믿음

1) 뒤로 물러가는 자

히 10:39 우리는 뒤로 물러가 멸망할 자가 아니요 오직 영혼을 구원함에 이르는 믿음을 가진 자니라

뒤로 물러나는 자는 멸망 당하는 자라고 말하고 있다. 믿음을 굳게 잡으시기 바란다. 하나님 앞에서 부끄러움이 없는 믿음을 가져야할 것이다. 마 10:33에 이야기한다.

마 10:33 누구든지 사람 앞에서 나를 부인하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 부인하리라

하나님이 모른다 하게되면 그 인생은 끝난 것이다. 심각하게 된다. 아담과 하와는 마귀가 네가 먹는 날에는 하나님이 될 것이라는 유혹에 빠져서 그냥 하나님을 떠났다. 하나님 떠남으로 인해서 영원한 멸망, 저주, 재앙이 임했다. 지금도 똑같이 위협을 하고 있다. 육신의 핍박이라는 유혹으로 공격해들어오고 있다. 인간은 잠깐의 고통을 견디지 못한다. 아이고 안되겠습니다 하고 하나님을 떠나버린다. 바로 그것이 주님께서는 영원한 천국을 떠나는 것이라고 말씀하신다. 그러므로 우리는 확실한, 견고한 신앙 안에 들어가야할 줄로 믿는다. 오직 영혼을 구원함에 이르는 믿음을 가진 자라고 말하고 있다. 어떤 문제가 있더라도 오직 구원함에 이르는 믿음이 중요하다는 말이다. 하나님 약속을 확실히 붙잡는 믿음을 말한다. 그리스도를 버린 사람들 가운데 가장 대표적인 인물을 들라면 유대인들을 들 수 있다. 유대인들은 예수님을 죽였으니까. 하나님을 떠나고 예수님을 떠난게 아니라 완전 죽여버렸다. 하나님 떠난 것에 대표적인 인물이다. 그 결과 어떻게 되었는가. AD 70년에 완전히 이스라엘 나라가 멸망당했다. 2천년 동안 그 후손들이 얼마나 많은 고통을 당하면서 저주, 조롱, 핍박을 받았는지 모른다. 하나님 떠난 자의 모습이 그렇게 저주받은 민족이 없었다. 그런데 기가막히게도 2천년만에 회복이 되었다. 어떻게 회복이 되었는가. 어떻게 저주에서 해방 받았는가. 여러가지 원인이 있겠습니다만 크게 두가지로 말할 수 있다.

2) 구원에 이르는 믿음

첫번째는 창 17:7-8 말씀 때문이다.

창 17:7-8 내가 내 언약을 나와 너 및 네 대대 후손 사이에 세워서 영원한 언약을 삼고 너와 네 후손의 하나님이 되리라 8 내가 너와 네 후손에게 네가 거류하는 이 땅 곧 가나안 온 땅을 주어 영원한 기업이 되게 하고 나는 그들의 하나님이 되리라

아브라함의 믿음을 보시고 기뻐하시면서 아브라함을 축복하시고 그 후손을 축복하신다. 하나님께서 얼마나 기뻐하시는지 기업으로 이 땅을 주겠다고 약속을 하셨다. 하나님께서는 이 언약의 말씀을 잊지 않으시고 2천년 만에 지키신 것이다. 그러면 이스라엘 백성들은 어떻게 했는가. 신 26:5-9 말씀이다.

신 26:5-9 너는 또 네 하나님 여호와 앞에 아뢰기를 내 조상은 방랑하는 아람 사람으로서 애굽에 내려가 거기에서 소수로 거류하였더니 거기에서 크고 강하고 번성한 민족이 되었는데 6 애굽 사람이 우리를 학대하며 우리를 괴롭히며 우리에게 중노동을 시키므로 7 우리가 우리 조상의 하나님 여호와께 부르짖었더니 여호와께서 우리 음성을 들으시고 우리의 고통과 신고와 압제를 보시고 8 여호와께서 강한 손과 편 팔과 큰 위엄과 이적과 기사로 우리를 애굽에서 인도하여 내시고 9 이곳으로 인도하사 이 땅 곧 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅을 주셨나이다

이 말씀을 요약을 하자면 애굽의 학대와 억압 속에서 아브라함의 하나님에게 부르짖는다. 그 때 약속의 하나님께서 애굽 땅에서 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅으로 인도해주셨다는 고백의 내용이다. 이 내용은 언약의 하나님께서는 반드시 하신 말씀을 지키시는 하나님이다 하는 것을 고백하는 것이다. 이스라엘 백성들이 2천년 동안 방황하면서 이 언약을 잡았다. 이스라엘 민족들이 도망당하면서 핍박을 받으면서도 자손 대대로 이 말씀을 일러주고 암송하게 했다. 우리 하나님께서는 아브라함에게 허락하신 약속의 말씀을 반드시 지키실 것이다, 그러니까 너희들 이 말씀을 꼭 붙잡고 기도하라고 전했던 것이다. 그래서 이스라엘 백성들이 축제나 감사제에서 꼭 이 말씀을 낭송하고 기도했다. 2천년 동안 했다. 살아계신 하나님께서 그 기도를 들으시고 응답하셨다. 왜 그랬는가. 하나님은 반드시 언약의 하나님이시요 언약을 붙드는 자에게는 반드시 살아계신 증거를 보여주신다. 이스라엘 백성들, 유대인을 회복시키신 하나님께서 지금도 살아계시고 지금도 언약을 성취하고 계신다. 그 언약을 여러분들을 통해서 이루시기 위해서 성취하고 계시다. 그렇다면 복음가진 자가 누려야할 10가지 비밀을 꼭 잡으시기 바란다. 이것은 우리에게 너무나 중요한 10가지 비밀이다. 이스라엘 백성들이 2천년 동안 말씀을 붙잡고 고백했듯이 이 10가지 비밀을 붙잡고 고백하면서 기도하시기 바란다.

3. 10가지 비밀

1) 독립 (혼자라도 사는 비밀)

독립이라는 것은 혼자서도 사는 비밀이다. 앞으로 적그리스도 시대가 올 것이다. 로마시대에 문제가 되지 않은 큰 환란이 앞으로 있게될 것이라고 예언이 되어있다. 아마 그 적그리스도가 정권을 잡게되면 성경책도 없어질 것이고 보지 못하게 할 것이다. 아마 교회는 다 문닫아서 가서 예배도 못드리게 될 지도 모른다. 그런 상황이 된다고 하더라도 혼자 살아남을 수 있어야 한다. 요셉을 보시기 바란다. 복음가진 요셉이 혼자서 애굽 땅에 가서 승리했다. 다시 말씀드리면 함께하는 비밀을 누리게 될 때는 살 수 있다. 어떤 문제가 오더라도 승리하게 될 줄로 믿는다.

2) 영적사실(영적 흐름)

여러분들이 어려운 상황을 만날 수 있다. 고통을 받을 수도 있다. 왜 주셨나를 보시기 바란다. 반드시 그 뒤에 영적 사실을 발견하시기 바란다. 영적 사실을 발견하게 되면 영적 흐름은 간단하게 바뀔 수 있다. 함께하심을 누리시기 바란다. 지난 시간에 게르마네 쿠스라는 젋은이가 순교하는 모습을 봤다. 그 사람은 나한테 달려오는 사자를 본 것이 아니라 그 위에 계신 하나님의 영광을 바라봤던 것이다.

3) 역발상(반대쪽)

하나님의 응답은 반드시 사람이 생각하지 못한 반대쪽에 있다. 이 사울 왕이 잡았던 것은 자기 가문을 살리고 아들을 위해서 모든 생명을 걸었었다. 그러기 위해서 다윗을 죽이려고 끝까지 쫓아다녔다. 그러나 다윗은 진짜 응답을 붙잡았다. 정말 승리하시기 바란다. 요셉의 형들은 아버지께서 칭찬듣는 요셉이 질투나서 항상 거기에 모든 것이 붙잡혀 있었다. 그러나 요셉은 언약을 붙잡았다. 그러면 승리할 수 있다.

4) 시너지(살려라)

모든 사람들이 세상을 보면 밟고 죽이려고 한다. 전도자, 언약 가진 사람들은 무조건 살리는 자이다. 죽이는 것은 절대 하지 말라. 원수라도 살리는 자로 가라는 것이다. 그럴 때는 하나님께서 내가 가는 곳 마다 살리는 역사가 나타나게 하실 줄로 믿는다. 이 축복 누리시기 바란다.

5) 위기(답)

우리는 살아가면서 많은 위기를 만날 수 있다. 그러면 위기를 택하라는 것이다. 어려움을 당할 수 있다. 그러면 어려움을 택하라는 것이다. 육신이 사는 것을 택하는 것이 아니라 어려움을 택하고 위기를 택하라는 것이다. 거기에 답이 있고 더 큰 기회가 있다.

6) 무경쟁

무슨 말씀인가. 싸울 필요가 없다는 것이다. 왜냐. 다니엘이 가졌던 것을 찾으라는 것이다. 다니엘은 싸우지 않고 이겼다. 이 비밀이 바로 무경쟁의 비밀이다.

7) 재창조

우리가 함께를 누리게되면 재창조의 힘이 임하게 된다. 재창조를 통해서 나타나는 축복을 누리게 될 것이다. 하나님께서 주신 이 재창조의 힘은 아무도 빼앗지도, 따라할 수도, 막을 수도 없는 힘이다. 이 축복을 누리는 여러분 되시기 바란다.

8) 서밋

복음가진 여러분들은 가는 곳 마다 서밋으로 세우실 줄로 믿는다. 우리 렘넌트들은 반드시 서밋으로 세워질 줄로 확신한다. 서밋이라는 것은 세상 출세를 이야기하는 것이 아니라 영적 서밋을 이야기한다. 요셉은 바로위에 그를 인도하는 영적 서밋의 자리로 갔다. 우리 렘넌트들도 이 축복된 자리에 들어갈 줄로 믿는다.

9) 황무지 (Nobody)

우리 전도자가 가야할 곳은 완전히 죽은 장소이다. 우리 렘넌트들이 갈 곳이 죽은 장소이다. 고통 받는 사람들, 죽어가는 사람들 살려야한다. 어려움이 올 수도 있다. 그래도 거기로 가라는 것이다. 이것이 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 것이다. 하나님께서 함께하시는 역사가 나타날 줄로 믿는다.

10) 절대언약 (계획)

절대로 속지 마시기 바란다. 사람들의 말은 틀린 말, 틀린 것이다. 그것을 붙잡게되면 틀린 응답이 올 수 밖에 없다. 사람을 말을 잡지 말고 하나님 말씀을 잡으시기 바란다. 그 때는 하나님께서 여러분들은 절대 계획 속으로 인도하실 줄로 믿는다. 그러므로 나를 하나님의 절대 계획과 절대 언약 속으로 드리시기 바란다. 이것이 바로 하나님이 기뻐하시는 절대 제자가 누릴 축복인 줄로 믿는다. 정말 이 열가지만 꼭 붙잡게 되면 전도자로서 큰 열매를 맺게될 줄로 믿는다.

결론

벧전 1:8-9 예수를 너희가 보지 못하였으나 사랑하는도다 이제도 보지 못하나 믿고 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움으로 기뻐하니 9 믿음의 결국 곧 영혼의 구원을 받음이라

여러분들의 믿음을 나타내고 있다. 여러분들은 예수님을 본 적이 없다. 그러나 여러분들은 예수님을 사랑한다. 이것이 구원받은 증거이다. 보지 못한다. 그러나 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움, 천국의 소망을 갖고있는 줄로 믿는다. 예배드리는 것 자체가 가장 기쁜 순간인 줄로 믿는다. 이것이 바로 믿음이다. 이 믿음이 나한테 주어진다면 믿음의 결국 곧 영혼의 구원을 받음이라. 여러분들에게 이미 큰 축복의 역사, 임마누엘의 비밀의 역사가 누려지고 있는 줄로 믿는다.

Faith that Fulfills the Saving of the Soul (Hebrews 10:36-39)

“36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: 37 'For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry. 38 Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.' 39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.”

Introduction

In America, there was a famous steel king, Andrew Carnegie. One day, Carnegie visited an old man’s house but when he entered his house, he saw something on the man’s wall and was very touched. In the old painting, there was a boat and an oar on a sandy beach. This painting looked very interesting so Carnegie went closer to look at it and under the painting, it wrote, “The high tide will come. On that day, I will go out to the sea.” When he read those words, he was very moved and couldn’t sleep at night because he kept thinking about that painting and those words. Whenever he got the time, he would visit the old man’s house again and again, and look at the painting. Carnegie requested the old man that when it was time for the old man to leave the world for him to leave the old painting for him. When the old man heard this request, he made sure to leave this painting for Carnegie when he passed away. When Carnegie received this painting, he made sure to keep that painting in the center of his office for the rest of his life. He kept those words and the painting as the main motto for his life. He always thought to himself that the high tide will eventually come. This means that there is a time for everything. Whenever that time comes, you need to do your best and endure, then you can overcome all things. That is why today’s message is very important. Last week, we spoke about the Christians and martyrs who were victorious against the persecutions against them. 

1. For the Promise

1) The need of endurance

Verse 36 - We need to have endurance. Why is that? It is so that we can receive the promised reward from God. As we live in this world, we need to do our best before God and possess the best faith that we can have before God. 

Matthew 24:13 (“But he who endures to the end shall be saved.”) - Why is that? The wicked Satan will do anything to try to shake and break apart Christians and the people of God. He will try to do that with different trials, temptations, and scars placed in our lives and try to shake our faith. That is why Jesus Christ said that those who endure until the end will be saved. Then the question is, “If we are saved and we will go to heaven in the end, then why do we have to endure? We will end up going to heaven anyway? But do you really think that this is how it will be like? Let me ask you a question then, how do you know if God has chosen you or not? You may think that you have been chosen according to your own terms but God may not see you as one of the chosen ones. Then, what does it mean to endure? This is something that we must always think about. Those who endure until the end, you are the chosen child of God. Those who give up easily, leave the gospel, and fall into trials, those who are the ones who can’t endure and they aren’t chosen. Those kinds of people may have not sincerely accepted Christ. If you are chosen, then you will have endurance. According to worldly standards, if you look at the famous paintings and artwork, these artists really possessed the fruits of perseverance. The artist Leonardo da Vinci who drew “The Last Supper” took 8 years to complete the painting. Not only that but in order to prepare for this painting, he made 2,000 sketches. This is how much time he spent drawing this painting. As you know the painting, “The Mona Lisa” took Leonardo da Vinci 4 years to complete this painting. The model for "The Mona Lisa" had to sit before Leonardo da Vinci for 4 years for him to finish this painting. Not only did the painter have perseverance but also the model, Mona Lisa as well. Due to their perseverance, they were able to finish and create these amazing art pieces. 

2 Thessalonians 3:5 (“Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.”) - As you live in this world, those who are saved, you will absolutely meet God one day. What always gets stuck in my heart is, when I stand before God one day, what will I have to say? If God asks me what I did while I was on Earth, I wonder if I have anything to say before Him. And to be honest, I don’t think I will have much to say. We need to do our best on this Earth and endure so that we can stand before God proudly and confidently. What is the purpose of our lives? It is to give glory to God. It is so that we can receive compliments from God when we stand before God in heaven.      

2) The faith of the righteous  

Verse 37 - This may sound like Jesus will come tomorrow but this is not what it is saying. This means that Jesus Christ will absolutely come one day and before your very eyes, we will see Jesus Christ one day. We need to alway think about this. We must live our lives as if we will meet Jesus tomorrow. 

More importantly, in verse 38 - The just shall live by faith. What is the reason for this verse? There are many those who are considered just and live their lives for God. These people will wear the crown of righteousness in heaven. I am sure when we go to heaven, we will wear multiple crowns. Even elder Cho said that he wants to wear many crowns in heaven. Imagine how happy God was to hear that. In order for us to wear the crown of righteousness, Jesus Christ wore the crown of thorns. Why did Jesus wear the crown of thorns? It was because we became separated from God. What happens when you leave God? You have no choice but to become a child of the devil by default. Then you will live a life of misery and suffering and at the end of life you will be bound by the fate and destiny of hell. In other words, in order to solve our fundamental problems of hell and sin, Jesus Christ died on the cross for us. And to show the evidence that He solved all problems on the cross, He resurrected after His death. Those who believe in this, you will become a child of God and a child of righteousness. Those who believe in this will become children of righteousness as well as those who have endurance. This is a very important message. We who believe and as a child of God, whatever temptations or trials come to us, we are able to endure and have patience. Today’s Biblical passage speaks about anyone who draws back and away from God, God will have no pleasure in him. If you draw back and give up when it gets hard, then God will find no pleasure in that. When we give up during times of conflicts and hardships, the same fate that came upon Adam and Eve will come upon you. The moment Adam and Eve left God, they became slaves to Satan. The moment we give up and draw back, we have become children of Satan. The moment you return back and draw back, you return back to the original state of mankind of suffering and as a child of Satan. 

2. The Faith for the Saving of the Soul

1) Those who draw back to perdition  

Verse 39 - Those who draw back, they will fall into destruction. Hang onto faith. We need to have faith so that we will not be ashamed before God. 

Matthew 10:33 “But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”- If God says that He doesn’t know you then that will become a severe situation. Adam and Eve fell into temptations of Satan and wanted to become more important than God, and eventually left God. They left God and eternal damnation of hell and sin came upon them. This applies to us even now. The temptations of sin are still upon us. Because we can’t tolerate this temptation and trial for a short period of time, we end up giving up and returning back to the old ways. This means that you are leaving eternal heaven before God. You have to have the faith of assurance and endurance. 

Verse 39 - No matter what problem or situation comes to us, we must have the faith of endurance and faith of saving of souls. We must have the faith to believe and keep God’s covenant. Those who abandoned and left Jesus were the Jews. They were the prime example because they were the ones who killed Jesus Christ. Not only did they abandon Jesus but they killed Him. This may sound like a very extreme statement but that is what happened. In 70 AD, Israel was completely destroyed. For 2,000 years, the descendants of the Israelites experienced tremendous suffering. This is the image of those who left God. There was no nation that was more cursed and that suffered more than the land of Israel. But after 2,000 years, restoration came upon Israel. How did this happen? They were in the midst of destruction but how did restoration come upon them? There were two ways on how this happened.   

2) The faith for the saving of the soul

The first way was written in Genesis 17:7-8 “And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. 8 Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” - When God saw the faith of Abraham, God was very happy and He blessed the descendants of Abraham. That is why God gave this promise to Abraham. God didn’t forget this covenant that God gave to Abraham and He fulfilled this covenant. Why did the people of Israel do? 

They held onto Deuteronomy 26:5-9 “And you shall answer and say before the Lord your God: ‘My father was a Syrian, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. 6 But the Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us. 7 Then we cried out to the Lord God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and looked on our affliction and our labor and our oppression. 8 So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. 9 He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, 'a land flowing with milk and honey.' ” - God called Abraham forward. The God of promise led Abraham to the land of promise and this is the content of this Bible passage that shows that God is the God who fulfills and keeps His promises. This Biblical passage explains about how God kept the promise that He gave to Abraham to His descendants, the Israelites. This was how God led them to the land of the promise. This was the covenant that the people of Israel held onto. The Israelites would make their children recite and imprint this word of the covenant. They held on the promise that God will absolutely keep and fulfill the promise as well as the covenant that God gave to Abraham. And they made sure to emphasize this to their children. That is why whenever they raised their children and had worship together , they always held onto this covenant together. They did this for 2,000 years. God who was alive, He received their prayers and kept His promise. Why was that? God is the absolute God of the covenant and He will absolutely keep His promise to His children. The Israelites who were freed from slavery and received restoration, even now, this God works in our lives. Through you, God will fulfill His promise. If that is so, there are 10 mysteries that we must hold onto as evangelists. This is very important for us. Just like how for 2,000 years, the Israelites held onto the covenant and prayed, in the same way, we need to hold onto these 10 mysteries.    

3. The Ten Mysteries    

1) Independence/isolation (the mystery of surviving on your own) - In the future, there will be a time when the Antichrist will appear. Just like how it was absolutely prophesied that a massive persecution will arise in Rome, the same persecution against Christians will come in the future. I am sure in the future, churches will  start to close down and people will prevent Christians from gathering at churches for worship. When that time comes, you need to have the strength to survive on your own. Joseph went to Egypt and succeeded while holding onto the gospel alone. We need to enjoy the mystery of “With.” 

2) Spiritual facts (spiritual flow) - I am sure you will meet people who are suffering and experiencing problems. You need to see why. You need to see the spiritual truth behind this. When you discover the spiritual truth, you will absolutely be able to change the spiritual flow. May you enjoy “with.” Last week, we spoke about the young man, Germanicus who was martyred at a young age. When he was martyred, he didn’t see the lions who were about to kill him but he saw God in heaven watching over him. 

3) Unconventional thinking (opposite content) - The answers that God gives to man will absolutely be unimaginable and unexpected. This means that the answers and the things that we receive from will be completely different and opposite from what we think. King Saul made sure to do everything in his power to make his son king so that is why he tried kill David. But David held onto the true answer. Be victorious. Joseph’s brothers were so caught up by their jealousy against their brother but Joseph held onto the covenant. That is why he was able to be victorious in the end.  

4) Synergy (Saving others) - Everyone else looks at the world and only thinks about stepping over others to get to the top but we must think differently. We must save others. Even if someone is seen as your enemy, think about how you can save them. Then, God will allow you to do the life saving movement. Enjoy this blessing. 

5) Crisis (answer) - You will face problems and crises in the future. Choose the crisis. You will face difficulties. Choose difficulties. You are not chosen so that you can take the easy path, you need to pick the difficult paths. Because within those difficulties and problems there are answers and opportunities prepared for you. 

6) No competition - There is no need for you to fight. This is because we need to find what Daniel had. If we find what Daniel had, then there is no need for us to fight. This mystery of no competition. 

7) Re-creation - If we enjoy “with” then we can receive the power of recreation. We can enjoy the blessing of the power of recreation. The power of recreation that God has given to us, no one can take it away or block from you. 

8) Summit - Those who have the gospel, wherever we go, God will raise you up as the summit. I believe that our remnants will be raised as summits. Being a summit doesn’t mean that you need to become the summit of this world but you will become the spiritual summit. We will go before Pharaoh but we will stand beyond pharaoh. Just like Moses. May our remnants enjoy the blessing of the summit. God will go with you. 

9) Wilderness (nobody) - The places where our evangelists will go are the places of desolation. We will go to the dying fields. We must save those who are suffering and dying. We will face difficulties but still, we must go. This is what will make God happy. May you experience God being happy through you.    

10) Absolute covenant (plan) - Hold onto God’s absolute plan. Don’t be deceived. People’s words are full of incorrect words and deceptions, if we hold onto men’s words, then we will fall into deceptions. Instead, hold onto God’s words. If you do this, then God will lead you to His absolute covenant and plan. This is the blessing that we as evangelists must enjoy. If we hold onto these 10 mysteries, then we will bear great fruit as evangelists. 

Conclusion

1 Peter 1:8-9 (“Whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.”) - This is talking about our faith. We haven’t seen Jesus Christ yet but God loves us so much. This is the proof that we are saved. We can’t see God with our own eyes but we possess inexpressible joy and are full of glory. Being able to give worship to God is joy itself. This is what it means to have faith. Having this faith is having salvation for our souls. May we enjoy the blessing of Immanuel. Let us pray with the word of God. Let us place our hands over our weaknesses and enter into prayer once again.
