“무리가 아침마다 각 사람은 먹을 만큼만 거두었고 햇볕이 뜨겁게 쬐면 그것이 스러졌더라 22 여섯째 날에는 각 사람이 갑절의 식물 곧 하나에 두 오멜씩 거둔지라 회중의 모든 지도자가 와서 모세에게 알리매 23 모세가 그들에게 이르되 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내일은 휴일이니 여호와께 거룩한 안식일이라 너희가 구울 것은 굽고 삶을 것은 삶고 그 나머지는 다 너희를 위하여 아침까지 간수하라 24 그들이 모세의 명령대로 아침까지 간수하였으나 냄새도 나지 아니하고 벌레도 생기지 아니한지라 25 모세가 이르되 오늘은 그것을 먹으라 오늘은 여호와의 안식일인즉 오늘은 너희가 들에서 그것을 얻지 못하리라 26 엿새 동안은 너희가 그것을 거두되 일곱째 날은 안식일인즉 그 날에는 없으리라 하였으나 27 일곱째 날에 백성 중 어떤 사람들이 거두러 나갔다가 얻지 못하니라 28 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 어느 때까지 너희가 내 계명과 내 율법을 지키지 아니하려느냐 29 볼지어다 여호와가 너희에게 안식일을 줌으로 여섯째 날에는 이틀 양식을 너희에게 주는 것이니 너희는 각기 처소에 있고 일곱째 날에는 아무도 그의 처소에서 나오지 말지니라 30 그러므로 백성이 일곱째 날에 안식하니라 31 이스라엘 족속이 그 이름을 만나라 하였으며 깟씨 같이 희고 맛은 꿀 섞은 과자 같았더라 32 모세가 이르되 여호와께서 이같이 명령하시기를 이것을 오멜에 채워서 너희의 대대 후손을 위하여 간수하라 이는 내가 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낼 때에 광야에서 너희에게 먹인 양식을 그들에게 보이기 위함이니라 하셨다 하고 33 또 모세가 아론에게 이르되 항아리를 가져다가 그 속에 만나 한 오멜을 담아 여호와 앞에 두어 너희 대대로 간수하라 34 아론이 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하신 대로 그것을 증거판 앞에 두어 간수하게 하였고 35 사람이 사는 땅에 이르기까지 이스라엘 자손이 사십 년 동안 만나를 먹었으니 곧 가나안 땅 접경에 이르기까지 그들이 만나를 먹었더라 36 오멜은 십분의 일 에바이더라” (출 Exodus 16:21-36)

서론

요즘에 천국을 체험한 사람들의 간증이 유투브에 많이 올라오더라. 이것도 하나님의 계획 아닌가 싶다. 많은 사람들이 교회를 떠나고 신학생도 줄고 하는 시대에 하나님이 특별은총으로 체험을 하게 해서 간증을 하는게 아닌가싶다. 분명한것은 천국이 있고 지옥도 분명히 있다. 방금 본 영상과 마찬가지로 우리가 죽게되면 반드시 주님 앞에 가게 되어있다. 주님을 믿는 자 그리고 믿지 않는 자 는 주님 앞에 설때 갈라지게 될것이다. 분명한것은 주님은 부활 하셔서 지금도 살아 역사 하고 계신다. 우리는 지금 살아계신 하나님을 믿는것이다. 오늘 우리가 본문에 읽었다시피, 살아계신 주님이 계셔야만 일어날수 있는 일들이 있다. 말씀 통해 여러분들이 하나님을 사실적으로 체험하는 시간 되시기를 바란다. 

1. 살아계신 하나님 The Living God

(1) 만나를 주신 이유 The Reason for Giving Manna

출 Exodus 16:21

약 James 4:14, 신 Deuteronomy 8:3

21절 말씀 보겠다, “무리가 아침마다 각 사람은 먹을 만큼만 거두었고 햇볕이 뜨겁게 쬐면 그것이 스러졌더라” 만나가 들판에 있다가 햇빛이 뜨니 전부 녹아졌다는 내용이다. 아침에 일어나면 이슬이 맺혀 있다 햇빛이 쬐면서 사라지듯이 만나도 그러한것이다. 왜 남아있는 만나들을 없애셨을까? 여기에 중요한 의미가 있다. 하나님께서 은혜로 주신 양식 이기 때문에 하나님이 없애신것이다. 하나님께서 주신 선물, 은혜로 주신 것들은 참으로 고귀해서 천하게 취급 받거나 쓰레기처럼 버려지는것을 원치 않으신다. 그래서 사람들이 필요한 만큼만 가져가게 하시고 나머지는 녹아 없어지도록 하신것이다. 여기서 우리가 한가지 꼭 붙잡을 것이 있다. 우리가 먹는 음식이 무엇이냐 하는 것이다. 음식은 오늘 말씀에 따르면, 마치 만나 처럼 이슬과 같은 존재이다. 다시말해, 우리가 음식을 먹을때는 그 음식을 통해 생명을 유지하고 힘을 얻고 또 아이들은 자라나게 된다. 먹지 않는 음식은 어떻게 되는가? 하나님께서 사라지게 만드셨다. 우리에게 선물로 주신 달란트, 재능도 마찬가지이다. 하나님이 영광 받으시기위해 이러한 달란트들 주셨는데 하나님 주신 사명을 가지고 쓰면 아주 의미 있는것이다. 그런데 그 달란트 귀하게 여기지 않고 내버려 둔다면 사라지고 마는것이다. 그러면 우리의 인생도 같은 개념을 적용할수있다. 우리의 삶을 하나님께 영광 돌리는데 집중해서 산다면 참으로 많은 열매 맺을 수 있겠다. 그런데 우리가 살아가는데 있어서 하나님의 영광과 상관없이 육신에 초점맞춰 산다면 참으로 비참한 인생이 되는것이다. 약4:14 말씀 보면, “내일 일을 너희가 알지 못하는도다 너희 생명이 무엇이냐 너희는 잠깐 보이다가 없어지는 안개니라” 하고 말씀 하신다. 우리 인생이 대단한 것 같아도 결국은 안개에 지나지 않는, 허무한 것 이다 라는 말이다. 그러면서 신명기 8:3 에 중요한 말씀 하신다, “너를 낮추시며 너를 주리게 하시며 또 너도 알지 못하며 네 조상들도 알지 못하던 만나를 네게 먹이신 것은 사람이 떡으로만 사는 것이 아니요 여호와의 입에서 나오는 모든 말씀으로 사는 줄을 네가 알게 하려 하심이니라”. 하나님께서 광야에서 이스라엘 백성에게 만나를 주신 이유가 뭔가 하는것이다. 바로, 말씀으로만 살수 있다는 것을 알게 하시기 위해 그리 하신것이다. 너희들이 만나를 먹어서 힘을 얻고 생명을 유지하고 있지 않느냐, 마찬가지로 하나님께서 주신 영의 양식인 말씀을 받아야 만 자랄수 있고 생명을 유지 할 수 있다. 참 생명은 오직 말씀 통해서만 얻을 수 있는것이다. 그러면, 안식일을 주신 이유가 뭔가 이것이다. 22절 말씀 보면, “여섯째 날에는 각 사람이 갑절의 식물 곧 하나에 두 오멜씩 거둔지라”. 그런데 또 24절에 나온다, “그들이 모세의 명령대로 아침까지 간수하였으나 냄새도 나지 아니하고 벌레도 생기지 아니한지라”. 보통날에 두배로 거두면 다 썩어 없어졌는데, 여섯째 날에 생긴 만나는 그러지 않는것이다. 그럼 이 만나는 다른 종류의 만나인가 할수 있는데, 아니다. 그러면 어떻게 이런 차이가 있는가 하는것이다. 23절에 바로 그 이유를 이야기한다, “내일은 휴일이니 여호와께 거룩한 안식일이라”. 안식일이 있기때문에 하나님이 썩지 않게 하신것이다. 보통은 썩지 않아야 하는데 썩지 않게 하신 이유가 안식일에 비밀 때문이다. 그럼 안식일에 어떤 일 하시려고 이렇게 썩지 않게 하셨나. 레위기 11:44, “나는 여호와 너희 하나님이라 내가 거룩하니 너희도 몸을 구별하여 거룩하게 하고 땅에 기는바 기어다니는 것으로 인하여 스스로 더럽히지 말라”. 

(2) 안식일을 주신 이유 The Reason for Giving the Sabbath

출 Exodus 16:22-28

출 Exodus 31:13

먼저 하나님이 안식일 통해 이스라엘에게 정체성을 알리려 하신것이다. 그들의 정체성이 뭔가? 애굽 백성들과는 다르게 너는 하나님의 자녀다 하는것이다. 하나님의 자녀는 어떤 존재인가? 하나님이 거룩하시니 그도 거룩한것이다. 하나님 아버지가 거룩하니 자녀도 거룩한것이다. 일반 백성이 아니라 하나님의 거룩한 구별된 백성이다. 이런 축복을 누린 자들이 여호와의 백성이다. 27절에 백성중 일부가 안식일날 만나를 거두러 나간 내용이 나온다. 그러니 28절에 하나님이 진노 하시며 말씀하신다, “여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 어느 때까지 너희가 내 계명과 내 율법을 지키지 아니하려느냐” 여기서 주목할 것은 “너희가 내 계명과 내 율법을 지키지 아니하려느냐” 이것이다. 지금 시내산에서 율법을 받기 이전의 상황인데 왜 하나님이 이렇게 계명과 율법을 지키지 않냐고 하시는가? 어떤 말씀을 가지고 지금 이스라엘 백성을 책망하시는가 이것이다. 26절, “엿새 동안은 너희가 그것을 거두되 일곱째 날은 안식일인즉 그 날에는 없으리라 하였으나” 어짜피 나가봐야 그날은 만나가 없을것이니 나가지 말라 하신것이다. 하나님의 말씀이 곧 계명이요 율법 인 것을 알수있다. 특별히 주신 계명 뿐만 아니라 하시는 모든 말씀이 우리에게 계명이고 율법 인것이다. 그 말씀 그대로 아, 그래요? 안식일에는 나가지 않아야겠군요, 순종하며 사는 인생이 축복된 인생인것이다. 거룩하기 위해 따로 특별한 행동을 하는 것이 아니라 하나님 주시는 말씀 그대로 믿고 순종하는것이 나를 거룩하게 하는것이다. 출 31:13 말씀 꼭 잡으시라, “너는 이스라엘 자손에게 말하여 이르기를 너희는 나의 안식일을 지키라 이는 나와 너희 사이에 너희 대대의 표징이니 나는 너희를 거룩하게 하는 여호와인 줄 너희가 알게 함이라”. 안식일을 지키라 하는 것 이다. 말씀을 붙들라는 의미이다. 하나님과 교제를 하는 예배를 누리라는 것 이다. 그리하면 표징이 나타나나는 말이다. 나는 너희를 거룩하게 하는 표징을 주겠다 하셨다. 안식일이 어떤 날 인가? 하나님이 주신 말씀 통해 우리가 거룩함을 입게 된다. 다시말해 하늘보좌 축복 누리는 축복 받는 날이 안식일이다. 이렇듯 놀라운 축복이 안식일 안에 들어있는것이다. 

2. 영원히 간직할 것 What to keep forever

(1) 안식일을 지켜라 Keep the Sabbath

창 Genesis 2:3, 3:17, 막 Mark 2:27-28, 요 John 5:17

그러면 우리가 영원히 간직 할 것 이 나타난다. 안식일을 지키라 하셨다. 안식일에 대한 사건을 우리가 다시한번 붙잡아야겠다. 안식일의 시작은 창세기 2:3 에 이루어졌다, “하나님이 그 일곱째 날을 복되게 하사 거룩하게 하셨으니”. 일곱쨋날 안식일을 하나님이 복된날로 정하고 거룩하게 하신것이다. 우리가 예배 드리는 이 날은 하나님께서 복을 내리시는 날 이고 거룩하게 하시는 역사가 나타나는 그러한 날 이다. 이것이 창3:17 부터 나온다. 아담과 하와가 범죄하고 저주를 받게된다, “즉 땅은 너로 말미암아 저주를 받고 너는 네 평생에 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라”. 범죄하여 어떤 고통을 받게 되었는가? 땀을 흘려야 생명을 유지하는 축복을 받게 되었다. 항상 이 땅에서 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 힘들게 살아야 하는 상태가 된 인간이다. 그런데 하나님께서는 너희는 안식일을 지켜라, 그 일을 하지 마라 말씀 하신다. 바로 이 날은, 그 저주, 고통에서 해방 받는 날, 그렇게 정하신것이다. 그러니까 안식일은 모든 속박과 고통, 저주에서 해방 받는 날 인것이다. 그래서 예수님께서는 막 2:7에 말씀 하신다, “또 이르시되 안식일이 사람을 위하여 있는 것이요 사람이 안식일을 위하여 있는 것이 아니니”. 안식일을 하나님이 정하신것은 사람인 너희를 위하여 지으신것이다 이 말이다. 하나님이 안식일을 정하신것은 우리를 위하여 라는 것 이다. 그럼 안식일에 하나님이 무엇을 하신것인가? 성경에 보면 일을 하셨다고 나온다. 그것이 요 5:17에 나온다, “예수께서 그들에게 이르시되 내 아버지께서 이제까지 일하시니 나도 일한다 하시매”. 하나님 아버지께서는 안식일에 가서 쉬신게 아니라 그 날 마저 일을 하셨다는 의미다. 그래서 주님께서 나도 일한다 하시는것이다. 그러면서 막 2:28에 “인자는 안식일의 주인 이니라” 바로 예수님 자신이 안식일의 주인 이라 말씀 하시는것이다. 그래서 예수님은 공생애동안 안식일에도 많은 병자들을 고치셨다. 문둥병자, 눈먼자, 앉은뱅이, 많은 병자들을 고치셨다. 왜? 안식일의 주인 되시기 때문이다. 해방, 평강, 문제해결의 주인 되시기 때문에 그렇다. 안식일 통해 어떤 축복 받아야하는가? 모든 문제 해결 되는 축복의 역사가 말씀의 능력 통해 나타나게 되는것이다. 이것을 누리시는 여러분 되시기를 바란다. 하나님 자녀에게는 말씀하신것이 반드시 성취되게 되었다. 안식일이 이러 한 날 이구나 깨닫고 누리면 그 축복이 주어진다. 아, 나는 못믿겠어, 만나를 거두러 가야 해 하면 문제가 심각해진다. 축복을 못 누리게 된다. 또 하나님이 중요한 말씀 하신다. 

(2) 만나를 간수하라 Save the manna

출 Exodus 16:32-34

요 John 6:51

만나를 후손을 위해 간수하라 출 16장에 말씀 하신다, “그들에게 보이기 위함이니라 하셨다 하고”. 만나를 먹었다 하면 나중에 후손들이 못 믿을것이니 그것을 증거로 항아리에 담아 보존하라 하는 말씀이다. 지구상에 실질적, 역사적으로 있었던 일 임을 증명하는 것을 남겨라 하는것이다. 살아계신 하나님의 실질적인 역사를 보라고 하시는것이다. 이것을 꼭 붙잡으시라. 여러분에게도 많은 증거 주셨을것이다. 확실히 붙잡으시라. 그리고 항아리에 담으시라. 이 말씀을 들은 아론이 만나를 항아리에 담에 증거판 앞에 두었다 나온다. 이 증거판이 무엇인가, 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들에게 주셨던 십계명, 두 돌판을 이야기한다. 이것도 있을 수 없는 사건이다. 하나님이 친히 돌판에 새겨 주셨다. 말씀을 새겨 주신것이다. 그 앞에다 만나를 둔것이다. 지성소에는 십계명 돌판과 만나 항아리와 아론의 싹 난 지팡이가 들어있었다. 만나 항아리는 무엇을 의미하는가? 요 6:51에 다시 보겠다, “나는 하늘에서 내려온 살아 있는 떡이니 사람이 이 떡을 먹으면 영생하리라 내가 줄 떡은 곧 세상의 생명을 위한 내 살이니라 하시니라”. 이 만나를 먹는데, 왜 이 만나를 내리시는가? 이는 예수님의 살을 의미하는 만나인것이다. 살이라 함은, 예수님이 우리를 위해 십자가에 돌아가신 그 대속을 의미한것이다. 만나 항아리를 넣은것은 그리스도의 희생과 구원을 의미하고 우리에게 생명을 주신것을 의미한다. 여러분, 지성소에 있던 세가지 물건은 성삼위 하나님을 의미한다. 살아계신 하나님께서 말씀으로 돌판에 친히 새겨 당신이 하나님 되심을 증거 하신다. 만나를 항아리에 넣어, 내가 바로 너희를 위해 죽은 그리스도다 하며 살을 넣으신것이다. 또 아론의 싹 난 지팡이 통해 부활하신 성령의 하나님을 나타내시며 성삼위 하나님을 알려주신다. 이것을 후대에게 보이라 하신것이다. 항아리는 질그릇으로 만들어졌다. 우리 자신도 질그릇이다. 우리 안에 만나가 들어있는것이다. 다시말해, 우리 안에는 그리스도가 들어계신다. 이것을 우리 후손과 렘넌트들에게 보여줄 수 있어야한다. 그들에게 보이기 위해 만나를 집어넣어라 하신것이다. 우리가 후손들에게, 렘넌트들에게 보여줄것은 우리 안에 있는 그리스도이다. 우리를 위해 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가신 그리스도, 부활하신 그리스도 보여주는 여러분 되시기를 축원한다. 성삼위 하나님이 우리에게 이 땅에서 절대여정으로 가는 길을 인도하신다. 우리는 이미 거룩한 하나님 백성으로 우리의 모든 여정 친히 주관하고 계신다. 

3. 절대여정을 가는 길 The Path of the Absolute Journey

(1) 다윗의 목동생활 David's Life as a Shepherd

시 Psalm 78:71-72

다윗을 통해 여정을 보겠다. 다윗의 목동시절은 이 여정 가는데 준비하는 기간 이었다. 시편 78:71-72, “젖 양을 지키는 중에서 그들을 이끌어 내사 그의 백성인 야곱, 그의 소유인 이스라엘을 기르게 하셨더니 72 이에 그가 그들을 자기 마음의 완전함으로 기르고 그의 손의 능숙함으로 그들을 지도하였도다”. 다윗이 준비한 것은 세가지이다. 목동생활중 믿음과 기능과 그릇 이 세가지를 준비했다. 시와 찬송 통해 믿음을 고백하고 양을 지키는 물맷돌질 하면서 기능을 준비하고 양을 인도 하면서 사명의 그릇을 준비했다. 이것들을 준비할때 그 다음에 나타나는것이 바로 다윗과 사무엘의 만남이다. 

(2) 다윗과 사무엘의 만남 David and Samuel's Encounter

삼상 1 Samuel 16:13

다시말해 우리가 준비가 되면 하나님이 사람을 보내 성령의 역사하심을 나타나게 하신다. 삼상 16:13, “사무엘이 기름 뿔병을 가져다가 그의 형제 중에서 그에게 부었더니 이 날 이후로 다윗이 여호와의 영에게 크게 감동되니라 사무엘이 떠나서 라마로 가니라”. 준비 된 자에게 하나님은 시간표에 맞춰 찾아가셔서 사명을 주신다. 사명을 받게 되면 현장에서 하나님이 실질적으로 골리앗 만나는 시간표 주신다. 

(3) 다윗과 골리앗의 만남 David and Goliath's Encounter

삼상 1 Samuel 17:45

이스라엘 백성에게 엄청난 위기였던것이다. 그러나 하나님에게는 이것이 다윗이 현장에 나갈수 있는 시간표와 계획 이었다. 삼상 17:45, 벌벌떠는 이스라엘 민족이 지켜보는 앞에 다윗이 담대히 한 고백이다. “다윗이 블레셋 사람에게 이르되 너는 칼과 창과 단창으로 내게 나아 오거니와 나는 만군의 여호와의 이름 곧 네가 모욕하는 이스라엘 군대의 하나님의 이름으로 네게 나아가노라”. 이때 하나님이 함께 하신다. 돌 하나로 골리앗을 무너뜨린다. 여러분들에게 바로 이러한 증거 나타날 줄을 믿는다. 틀림없다. 이 축복 누리는 여러분 되시기를 바란다. 

결론 Conclusion

출 Exodus 16:35

말씀 맺겠다. 출 16:35, “사람이 사는 땅에 이르기까지 이스라엘 자손이 사십 년 동안 만나를 먹었으니 곧 가나안 땅 접경에 이르기까지 그들이 만나를 먹었더라”. 만나를 하루 이틀 먹은것이 아니라 40년을 먹은것이다. 광야생활 하는 내내 먹은것이다. 광야는 우리가 이 땅에 살아가는 시간을 의미한다. 광야 40년, 우리가 사는 인생동안 하나님이 절대로 지켜주시니 걱정 말아라 하는 의미이다. 너희들이 믿고 후대들에게, 또 현장에 이 믿음의 항아리를 보여줘라 하는 말씀이다. 후대를 양육하라는 의미다. 그렇게 후대를 통해 이스라엘이 가나안 점령한다. 이 응답 받는 여러분 되시기를 예수 그리스도 이름으로 축원한다.

21 So they gathered it every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted. 22 And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 23 Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.’ ” 24 So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it. 25 Then Moses said, “Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.” 27 Now it happened that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none. 28 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? 29 See! For the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore He gives you on the sixth day bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day. 31 And the house of Israel called its name Manna. And it was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32 Then Moses said, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it, to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’ ” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations.” 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. 35 And the children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 Now an omer is one-tenth of an ephah. 

Introduction

There are many videos on Youtube regarding people who talk about their experiences in heaven. You are seeing many people leaving churches and not believing in God, and I think God is working in other ways to show that He is alive. What is absolute is that there is heaven and hell. When we die, our soul will come before God. Those who believe in God and those who don’t believe in God, which way you will go will be determined. What is absolute is that Jesus Christ resurrected and is alive now. We believe in the resurrected Jesus Christ who is alive. Today’s Biblical passage spoke about the works and miracles that will arise only when God is alive. Through today’s sermon, may we experience God who is alive. 

1. The Living God

(1) The Reason for Giving Manna

Verse 21 - God bought manna from heaven above and when manna comes down, it will start melting with sun shines on it. The manna will start melting when the sun comes up and starts shining throughout the day. Why did God make manna disappear and melt away by the end of the day? What is important is that it is all part of God’s grace of His daily bread. God wants His gift and grace to not be treated lightly. God gave manna to the Israelites that was enough for only daily portions day by day. What is food for us? Food is like the manna that we see in the scripture and like dew in the mornings. When we eat food, it gives us strength, sustains life, and allows us to grow. But what about food that is not edible? God makes it disappear or no longer edible. It is the same thing with our talent and skills. God gave us our talents and skills so that we can give glory to God. We need to use our talent and skills for God’s glory. But even though God gave us His talent and skills, and we don’t use it for His glory then it will all disappear. This is the same thing with our life. If we live our life for God’s glory then we can bear many fruits. But if we live our lives for our own desires and greed, and not for God’s glory then we will live a life in vain. 

James 4:14 “Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” - We may think that life is great and grand but it can end tomorrow at any time. 

Deuteronomy 8:3 “So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.” - What is the reason why God gave the Israelites manna? It was so that the Israelites know that they must live by the word of God alone. God gave them manna so that they could live. Only when God gives us His word then can we live. Where is true life? It is within the word of God. What is the reason why God gave them Sabbath? 

(2) The Reason for Giving the Sabbath

Verses 22-28 - Usually when the manna is not thrown away by morning then the manna will rot and grow maggots. But on the Sabbath day, the manna would not rot even though you keep it till morning. But this was the same manna. Then why did the manna on the Sabbath not rot?

Verse 26 - God made sure that the manna on the Sabbath day would not rot. God allowed this miracle to show the meaning of the Sabbath day. What does God do on the Sabbath day to not make the manna rot? 

Exodus 31:13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.” - The Sabbath was given so that we can restore our identity. Their identity is children of God not just slaves of Egypt. This was what God was telling the Israelites. Because God is holy, we are also holy. It is rightful that because God is holy, His children are holy too. We are holy because we are children of God. This is the blessing that we possess as children of God. 

Verse 27 - People went out on the day of the Sabbath. This was before Mount Sinai and God asked if the Israelites kept His commandments or not? But this was before God gave them the 10 commandments so what is God speaking about? 

Verse 26 - On the Sabbath day, there is no manna which means on the Sabbath day, do not go out to get manna. This was God’s command. What God relays to us is God’s command and His law. If God speaks His words to not go out to get manna, then the Israelites should go out with faith and obey God’s word. When we obey God’s word and have faith, then that will make us righteous and holy. 

Hold onto Exodus 31:13 - God is telling us to keep the Sabbath and take hold of His word. God is telling us that we must give worship to God then God will give us a sign. God will give us a sign to make us holy and righteous. What is the day of the Sabbath? God will give us His word to make us holy and righteous. In other words, on the day of the Sabbath we can receive the blessing and power of the heavenly throne. The day of the Sabbath was a blessed day of worship. 

2. What to Keep Forever

(1) Keep the Sabbath

The Sabbath started in Genesis 2:3, 3:17 “Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. 3:17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.” - The day we give worship to God, He will pour down His blessings and make us holy. 

Genesis 3:17 - After Adam and Eve committed sin against God, they started to live a life of curses. After mankind committed sin, mankind had no choice but to live a life of curse and had to work in sweat. But God commanded them to keep the Sabbath day. God determined the day of the Sabbath to be freed from our sins and curses. The Sabbath day is the day where we are free from our sufferings and sin. 

Mark 2:27-28 “And He said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.’ ” - God created the Sabbath day for mankind and for us. What does God do on the Sabbath day? God is working on the Sabbath day. 

John 5:17 “But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.’ ” - God is not resting on the Sabbath day but He is working on the Sabbath day and continuously works. And Jesus is also working on the Sabbath day. 

Mark 2:28 - Jesus Christ is the Lord of the Sabbath. That is why on the day of the Sabbath, Jesus healed many people on that day. He healed many people like the crippled and the blind. Why did Jesus do that? Because He is the Lord of the Sabbath. He is the main character of the Sabbath and He is the Lord who will give us peace. What kind of blessings do we receive on the Sabbath? We receive the blessing where all of our problems are solved and healing takes place. For children of God, God’s word will absolutely be fulfilled. If we truly enjoy and understand what the day of the Sabbath is then we can enjoy these blessings. But if you don’t understand and still go out to gather manna on the Sabbath day then problems will arise. Then we cannot enjoy God’s blessings. 

(2) Save the manna

Verses 32-34 - God was telling them to show what happened in the wilderness regarding the manna. God was showing the evidence of what came from heaven above. We must hold onto this. God gives us a lot of evidence. Hold onto no matter what. Let us hold onto at least one evidence that God gives us. Aaron placed the manna in a jar and left it as evidence and historical proof. The evidence that was left was the tablets of the 10 commandments. The 10 commandments were the commandments that God wrote Himself. In the inner sanctuary, there was the jar of manna, the tablet of the 10 commandments, and Aaron’s staff. What does the jar of manna represent? 

This jar of manna is represented as seen in John 6:51 “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” - God gave manna from above to show that bread represents the body of Jesus Christ. It represents the flesh of Jesus Christ which shows how Jesus will die on the cross for us. They placed the manna in a jar showing the life of Jesus Christ. We are remembering and preserving the body of Jesus Christ and what Jesus did for us. The three items in the inner sanctuary represent the Triune God, the trinity God. The living God wrote the word of God on the tablet and proclaimed that He is the living God. Through the jar of manna, Jesus Christ was showing that this is His flesh and that He will die for us. And then, there was Aaron's staff which represented the resurrection that took place through the power of the Holy Spirit. That through the power of the Holy Spirit, we possess the power of resurrection as well. It is the Holy Trinity God and the Triune God. The jar of manna was left behind to show the next generations. We are a vessel and inside of us, there is the jar of manna. In other words, inside of us, we possess Jesus Christ. We must show this to our remnants and the next generation. In order to show this, God left behind the jar of manna. We must show our next generation Jesus Christ who is inside of us. Jesus Christ who died on the cross and resurrected for us, we must show to our next generation. 

3. The Path of the Absolute Journey

(1) David's Life as a Shepherd

David was a shepherd and it was part of his journey to prepare for his future. Psalm 78:71-72 “From following the ewes that had young He brought him, To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance. 72 So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.” - David prepared his skill, faith, and vessel. David wrote many songs to give praise and glory to God. While being a shepherd, he was preparing his skills and talents. He prepared his vessel and mission while shepherding. We need to prepare our lives before God. When we are ready, God will send us disciples and His mission. 

(2) David and Samuel's Encounter

1 Samuel 16:13 “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.” - Those who are ready and prepared, in God’s perfect time schedule, God will give you His mission. When you receive your mission, then you can head out to the field and you will face your Goliath. 

(3) David and Goliath's Encounter

For Israel, it was a national crisis but for God, it was David’s opportunity and time of blessing to go out to the field. Everyone was trembling in fear but David spoke out in boldness as seen in 1 Samuel 17:45 “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. ”. At this time, God was with David. With one stone, David completely destroyed Goliath. May this evidence come upon us. This will absolutely come upon us. May this blessing come upon you.

Conclusion

Verse 35 - When the Israelites ate manna, they didn’t just eat manna for a few days but they ate it for 40 years. They ate it only in the wilderness. This time in the wilderness represented their lives and journey. In your life, God will continue to protect you and take responsibility over you. There is nothing for us to worry about. God will take care of you. God is only asking that we show our faith and preserve our faith for our next generation. That is why the next generation was able to conquer the land of Canaan.
