“너는 나 외에는 다른 신들을 네게 두지 말라.” (출애굽기 20:3)

서론

제가 김형석 교수님의 유튜브 영상을 하나 보았다. 김 교수님은 제가 고등학교 시절에 유명한 강사였다. 당시에 김형석, 안병옥 같은 사람들이 강의를 한다고 하면 많은 사람들이 몰려들었다. 그분의 유튜브를 보니 지금 나이가 106세인데도 변함없이 귀중한 말씀을 전하시더라. 그분 말씀을 듣는 가운데 한 가지 중요한 말씀이 제 안에 들어왔다. 세상에는 두 가지 종류의 사람이 있는데 하나는 약속 장소에 시간에 맞춰 먼저 가는 사람이고 하나는 급하게 뛰어가는 사람이라고 이야기했다. 그런데 그러한 특징이 두 사람의 삶에 상당한 차이를 만든다고 말했다. 약속 시간 전에 미리 찾아가는 사람을 보면 항상 여유가 있고 편안함을 가진다고 한다. 급하게 시간을 맞춰 도착하는 사람은 숨이 거칠고 눈에 초점도 흐려지게 되고 조급함이 그대로 남아 있는 것을 볼 수가 있다. 아무래도 약속 장소에 미리 가 있는 사람은 만남에 앞서 준비를 할 수 있는 충분한 시간을 가질 수 있게 된다. 반대로 시간에 쫓겨 다니는 사람은 만남에 앞서 정돈되지 않은 마음 상태로 만나게 되는 것이다. 또 조급하게 가는 사람은 쫓겨 불안한 마음의 영향이 그 만남에까지 미친다고 한다. 미리 도착한 사람은 만남을 위해 준비할 시간을 가졌기 때문에 대화도 호감 속에 편하게 이끌어갈 수 있다고 한다. 이것은 예배 자세에도 많은 영향을 끼친다. 시간 맞춰 겨우 도착하게 되면 아무래도 그전까지 있던 일을 정리하고 예배를 위해 마음을 정리할 시간이 부족해 하나님께서 예비해 놓은 것을 많이 놓치게 된다. 미리 예배당에 오게 되면 마음을 준비하고 기도할 시간을 가질 수 있다. 우리가 신앙생활하는 데도 이것이 중요하다는 것을 느꼈다.  

1. 너는 나 외에는 You shall have no other gods

(1) 구원받은 너 You (the saved one)

출 Exodus 20:3, 엡 Ephesians 6:12 

오늘 말씀은 하나님께서 주신 말씀 가운데 제일 첫 번째로 주신 계명이다. “너는 나 외에는 다른 신을 두지 말라”. 여기서 가장 중요한 것이 이 계명을 “너” 에게 주신 것이다. 여기서 “너” 는 누구를 말하는가? 성경을 보면 창세기 15장에서 하나님께서 아브라함과 맺으신 횃불 언약에서 예정된 아브라함의 후손들임을 알 수가 있다. 바로 이들을 보고 언약의 백성들이라고 한 것이다. 이 언약의 백성들이 전부 온 것이 아니라 유월절 어린양의 피를 바른 사람들만 나온 것을 볼 수가 있다. 이러한 사람들에게 하나님이 큰 축복을 주신 것을 우리가 기억한다. 그러니까 모든 여정을 완벽하게 보호, 인도, 축복하셨다. 그 축복받은 백성들에게 주신 말씀이 계명인 것이다. 여기에는 구원받은 우리도 해당이 된다. 바로 죄에서 해방되고 사단에게서 해방 된 구원받은 우리에게 해당되는 말이다. 구원받은 우리에게 제일 먼저 주신 말씀이 “너는 나 외에는 다른 신을 두지 말라” 인 것이다. 왜 구원받은 사람에게 주신 것인가? 엡 6:12에 그 이유가 나온다. “우리의 씨름은 혈과 육을 상대하는 것이 아니요 통치자들과 권세들과 이 어둠의 세상 주관자들과 하늘에 있는 악의 영들을 상대함이라.” 분명한 것은 구원받은 우리에게도 눈에 보이지 않는 존재가 우리를 넘어뜨리려 하고 있다는 사실을 기억 하라는 말씀이다. 다시 말해 전혀 죄가 없던 아담과 하와를 넘어뜨린 사단이 지금도 똑같이 구원받은 우리에게도 공격하고 있다는 사실이다. 

(2) 나 외에는 No other gods

막 Mark 12:29, 고전 1 Corinthians 8:6, 호 Hosea 6:3

그들의 도전에 승리할 수 있는 비결이 바로 “너는 나 외에는 다른 신들을 네게 두지 말라” 라는 말씀이다. 그러면서 또 중요한 말씀을 하셨다. “나 외에는” 여기서 “나” 는 여호와 하나님을 칭한다. 마가복음 12:29에 예수님이 이 부분을 놓고 하시는 말씀이 나온다. “예수께서 대답하시되 첫째는 이것이니 이스라엘아 들으라 주 곧 우리 하나님은 유일한 주시라.” 이 말씀은 신명기 6:4에 유일한 여호와 하나님에 대하여 말씀하신 것을 나타내시는 것이다. 우리가 분명히 이 사실을 잡아야 한다. 유일신과 단일신을 구분하지 못하는 사람들이 많다. 우리는 성경에 기록된 유일하신 하나님을 믿는다. 그런데 유대교나 이슬람은 단일신을 믿는다. 그 차이가 무엇인가? 유일신은 영어로 하면 “monotheism” 이라고 한다. 정확히 말하면 “the one and only God” 이다. 이는 다른 창조주는 없다는 의미를 내포한다. 천상천하에 신은 하나님 한 분 되심을 의미한다. 그런데 여기서 우리가 붙잡을 것은, 유일한 하나님 안에 삼위일체의 하나님을 찾아볼 수가 있다. 유일한 하나님이라고 했는데 어떻게 삼위일체가 될 수 있지? 생각할 수 있다. 삼위일체 하나님은 그 본체가 단일한 신성을 가지고 계심을 나타낸다. 단일한 신성이라는 의미는 “The unity of Godhead”, 한 본체에 세 인격이 계신데 그분이 바로 성자 하나님, 성부 하나님, 성령 하나님이라는 말이다. 그분만이 유일하신 하나님이 되신다. 단일 신은 영어로는 “Henotheism” 을 이야기하는데, 이스라엘이 가진 사상은 여러 신들이 존재하고 있음을 인정하고 그중 한 신, 여호와를 우리는 섬긴다는 것이다. 이스라엘 백성의 사상은 세상에는 바알 신과 아세라 신, 여러 신이 있지만 가장 강하신 우리 여호와다라는 것이다. 그 사람들의 이론을 가지고는 성삼위 하나님을 설명할 수가 없다. 그들은 지금도 여호와 하나님 한 분만 인정하고 성삼위 하나님을 부인한다. 고전 8:6 보면 사도바울이 이에 대해 이야기 한다, “그러나 우리에게는 한 하나님 곧 아버지가 계시니 만물이 그에게서 났고 우리도 그를 위하여 있고 또한 한 주 예수 그리스도께서 계시니 만물이 그로 말미암고 우리도 그로 말미암아 있느니라”. 사도 바울이 삼위 하나님에 대해 정확하게 이야기하고 있음을 볼 수가 있다. 우리에게는 한 하나님, 곧 아버지 되시는 성부 하나님이 있는데, 그는 창조주 되신다고 말한다. 또한 한 주, Lord, 헬라어로는 큐리오스, 주님이라는 의미와 동시에 히브리어로는 “야훼” 의 의미를 가지고 있다. 그러니까 한 주 예수 그리스도께서 계신다는 말이다. 성부 하나님을 말할 때는 한 아버지, 하나님이 계시다고 했는데, 여기는 한 “주”, 야훼가 계시다고 설명하는 것이다. 그러면서 말씀하시기를, 만물이 그로 말미암고 우리도 그로 말미암아 있느니라” 한 것이다. 그분도 창조주이시다라고 말하는 것이다. In the Unity of Godhead는 성부 하나님도 창조에 동참하시고 성자 하나님도 창조주 하나님이 되셨다는 것을 의미한다. 우리가 창세기 보면 성삼위 하나님 모두 창조에 동참하신 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또 신약에서 보면 성삼위 하나님께서 구원에 동참하신 것을 볼 수가 있다. 우리를 구원하기 위해 성삼위 하나님이 역사하신 것이다. 원래 하나의 본성을 가진 하나님이 우리를 구원하기 위해 세 인격으로 나타나 동참하신 것이다. 이 사실을 아는 것이 하나님을 아는 것이다. 호세아서 6:3을 보면, “그러므로 우리가 여호와를 알자 힘써 여호와를 알자” 라고 나온다. 여호와라는 언약과 은혜의 하나님을 말한다. 이런 하나님을 알기 위해서는 어린 양의 피를 알아야 한다. 언약은 어린 양의 피를 통해 나타난다. 다시 말해 그리스도의 보혈의 피 없이는 우리가 하나님을 알 수가 없다는 말이다. 성삼위 하나님께서 우리를 구원하기 위해 동참하신 것이다. 그러므로 하나님께서 말씀하시기를, 너희를 애굽 땅에서 구원한 성삼위 하나님 외에는 다른 신은 절대 섬기지 말라는 말씀이다. 여기서 ‘나 외에는’이라고 된 말씀의 원어에 ‘알 파나이’를 사용했는데, 이는 ‘파님’이라는 ‘얼굴’이라는 뜻을 가진 단어에서 파생되었다. 그러니까 내 얼굴 앞에, 나와 함께 라는 의미를 가지고 있다. 나 외에 두지 말라는 것은 내 앞에 다른 존재가 전혀 있게 하지 말라는 뜻이다. 하나님과 소통하는 데 그 어떤 장애물도 두지 말라 하신 것이다. 이럴 때 진정한 축복이 임할 것이라는 비밀을 말씀하시는 것이다. 이 그리스도의 비밀을 붙잡지 않으면 이 축복을 누릴 수가 없는 것이다. 

2. 다른 신들을 있게 말라 Before Me

(1) 다른 신들을 Before Me

요일 1 John 2:16, 3:5, 합 Habakkuk 1:11, 딤후 2 Timothy 3:2 

다음에 잡을 것은 “다른 신들” 이라는 부분이다. ‘다른 신들’이라는 말에도 더 중요한 의미가 있다. 여기에도 원어를 보면 ‘이상한’, ‘헛된’이라는 의미가 있다. 다른 신들’이라는 말에 사용된 언어는 ‘아헤르 엘로힘’ 인데 여기에 또 재밌는 의미가 있다. 이는 다른 이상한 것들을 창조주 하나님으로 두지 말라는 말이다. 우리는 창조주 하나님만 모셔야 하는데 다른 것들을 창조주로 섬기고 있으니 그러지 말라고 하는 것이다. 여기서 우리가 중요한 것 하나 잡고 가야겠다. 제2계명은 어떤 형상도 만들지 말고 섬기지 말고 절하지 말라고 “형상”에 대해 말씀 주신다. 제2계명은 우리가 다음 시간에 말씀할 것이다. 그렇다면 제1계명은 정확히 무엇을 의미하는가? 이 말이다. 2계명은 눈에 보이는 우상에 앞서 1계명을 주신 것은  눈에 보이는 것보다 눈에 보이지 않는 존재에 너희가 더 큰 관심을 두어야 할 것임을 강조하는 것이다. 우리가 우상을 창조하는 이유가 뭔가? 모든 것의 시작은 창세기 3:6이었다. 먹음직도 보암직도 하고 탐스러운 나무에서부터 시작되었다. 먹고 싶고 보고 싶고 탐스러운 마음이 생겨 거기서부터 범죄가 시작된 것이다. 따져 보면 모든 우상의 시작은 바로 그 지점이었다. 요한일서 2:16 에 이를 다시 해석한 말씀이 나온다, “이는 세상에 있는 모든 것이 육신의 정욕과 안목의 정욕과 이생의 자랑이니 다 아버지께로부터 온 것이 아니요 세상으로부터 온 것이라”. 창세기 3:6을 사도 요한은 이렇게 표현한 것이다. 세상으로부터 온 것이라고 이야기한 것이다. “육신의 정욕, 안목의 정욕, 이생의 자랑” 이 모든 우상의 시작이 됨을 말하는 것이다. 모든 우상의 근본이 여기서 시작된 것이다. 골로새서 3:5에 “그러므로 땅에 있는 지체를 죽이라 곧 음란과 부정과 사욕과 악한 정욕과 탐심이니 탐심은 우상 숭배니라”. 실질적으로 우리를 지배하는 우상에 대한 기록으로 볼 수가 있다. 그러면서 사도 바울이 직접 탐심은 우상이라고도 이야기하는 것이다. 결국 우상은 인간이 자기 욕심을 채우기 위해 만들어낸 것이라고 나타낸다. 이것을 제거하라는 말씀이다. 하박국서 1:11, 자기들의 힘을 신으로 섬기는 자들 이라는 말씀이 나타난다, “그들은 자기들의 힘을 자기들의 신으로 삼는 자들이라, 이에 바람같이 급히 몰아 지나치게 행하여 범죄하리라”. 인간들이 믿는 자기들의 힘, 지식 또한 우상이라는 말이다. 그들에게는 바로 이것이 “엘로힘” 인 것이다. 딤후 3:2, “사람들이 자기를 사랑하며 돈을 사랑하며 자랑하며 교만하며 비방하며 부모를 거역하며 감사하지 아니하며 거룩하지 아니하며” 진짜 우리가 무서워 해야 할 것은 보이는 우상이 아니라 보이지 않는 자기를 사랑하고 돈을 사랑하고 자랑하며 교만한 것, 그것이 엘로힘 되는 것 이라는 말이다. 많은 사람들이 바로 이 다른 엘로힘 때문에 망하는 것이다. 

(2) 있게 하지 말라 You shall have no other gods

막 Mark 10:17, 21, 22, 창 Genesis 22:2, 12, 요일 1 John 5:21 

이것을 존재하게 하지 말고 곁에 두지 말라고 주신 말씀이다. 그러면 이것들로 존재하지 않게 하는 방법이 무엇인가 보아야겠다. 두 가지의 경우를 예로 두고 말하겠다. 마가복음 10:17에 부자 청년이 예수님을 찾아와 “무엇을 하여야 영생을 얻겠습니까?”라고 질문한다. 이에 예수님께서 내 계명을 지키면 영생을 얻을 것이라고 답하신다. 자기 생각에는 이미 모든 계명을 지킨다고 생각해 이미 그러고 있다고 했는데 , 예수님이 보시기에 그것이 아니었던 것이다. 그래서 21절에 “예수께서 그를 보시고 사랑하사 이르시되 네게 아직도 한 가지 부족한 것이 있으니 가서 네게 있는 것을 다 팔아 가난한 자들에게 주라 그리하면 하늘에서 보화가 네게 있으리라 그리고 와서 나를 따르라 하시니” 라고 말씀 하신다. 그런데 이 말을 들은 부자 청년이 22절에 보면 “슬픈 기색을 띠고” 돌아갔다고 나온다. 예수님이 부자 청년을 보신 포인트가 뭐고 이 청년이 그냥 돌아가게 된 이유가 뭔가? 그의 우상은 돈이었던 것이다. 네게 보이지 않는 돈이라는 우상을 전부 버려라, 말씀하신 것이다. 결국 이 우상 때문에 실패한 것이다. 또 한 가지가 있다. 창 22:2에 하나님께서 아브라함에게 말씀하신다, “여호와께서 이르시되 네 아들 네 사랑하는 독자 이삭을 데리고 모리아 땅으로 가서 내가 네게 일러 준 한 산 거기서 그를 번제로 드리라.” 아브라함이 백세에 자식을 얻고 기뻐서 아들을 사랑 속에 키우다가 그 아들이 그의 우상이 된 것을 하나님이 본 것이다. 그렇게 하나님은 아브라함을 시험하셨다고 나온다. 그렇게 모리아 산에 그 아들을 제물로 바치라고 명하신다. 그런데 참 놀랍다, 아브라함은 그 말씀에 순종 한다. 창 22:12에, “사자가 이르시되 그 아이에게 네 손을 대지 말라 그에게 아무 일도 하지 말라 네가 네 아들 네 독자까지도 내게 아끼지 아니하였으니 내가 이제야 네가 하나님을 경외하는 줄을 아노라”. 무슨 말씀인가? 네가 아들을 그렇게 사랑하면서도 그가 네게 우상은 아니었구나 하시며 이삭 대신 직접 예비하신 양을 번제물로 받으신다. 이 이후로 엄청난 축복을 아브라함이 받게 된다, “네 씨가 그 대적의 성문을 차지하리라.” (창세기 22:16-18) 예수 그리스도의 놀라우신 축복이 아브라함의 가문에 임하게 된 것이다. 아브라함이 이렇게 버린 것을 볼 수가 있다. 살전 5:22에도 너희는 악은 어떤 모양이라도 버리라 하신다. 이것이 바로 오늘 말씀과 일치한다. “너는 나 외에 다른 신은 두지 말라.” 우리가 가장 축복받을 수 있는 비결을 말씀하시는 것이다. 승리하시는 여러분 되시기를 바란다. 

3. 파수꾼의 미션 The watchmen's mission

(1) 주권자의 언약을 전달 Relaying the covenant of the Sovereign One

사 Isaiah 60:1 

그렇다면 우리가 파수꾼으로써 가질 미션은 무엇인가. 언약을 전달해야겠다. 사 60:1, “일어나라 빛을 발하라 이는 네 빛이 이르렀고 여호와의 영광이 네 위에 임하였음이니라.” 여러분은 이미 하나님 자녀이다. 이 말씀을 전할때 하나님 영광이 임할 줄을 믿는다. 

(2) 보좌를 움직이는 기도 Prayer that moves the Throne

사 Isaiah 62:7 

두 번째 미션은 보좌를 연결하는 기도가 있어야 한다. 이사야 62:7, “또 여호와께서 예루살렘을 세워 세상에서 찬송을 받게 하시기까지 그로 쉬지 못하시게 하라.” 우리가 기도 할때 하늘 보좌가 움직이는 사실을 꼭 믿으시기 바란다. 우리가 기도하는 순간 하늘 군대가 우리 기도 가지고 하늘의 보좌 앞에 가져다 둔다. 그 기도를 한마디도 빠짐없이 하나님은 응답하신다. 여러분이 지금 마음에 둔 기도제목 하나님은 다 아시고 응답을 준비하고 계신다. 이렇게 그로 쉬지 못하게 하라는 말이다. 

(3) 세계를 움직이는 전도 Evangelism that moves the world

사 Isaiah 62:10 

세 번째 미션은 세계를 움직이는 전도이다. 우리의 미션이다. 사 62:10, “성문으로 나아가라 나아가라 백성이 올 길을 닦으라 큰 길을 수축하고 수축하라 돌을 제하라 만민을 위하여 기치를 들라”. 이미 승리하신 길을 나아가시기를 바란다. 우리는 가서 기치만 꽂으면 된다. 그 길로 나아갈때 모든 치유와 회복이 이루어지게 될 줄을 믿는다. 우리 주님은 살아계신 하나님 되신다. 성삼위 하나님이 지금도 역사하고 계신다. 

Conclusion

신 Deuteronomy 6:5 

말씀 맺겠다. 우리가 할 것은  신명기 6:5 말씀이다, “너는 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하고 힘을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하라”. 우리가 이 말씀대로 하면 모든 축복을 다 받게 되어 있다. 막혀 있던 모든 문이 열리게 되어 있다. 하나님이 최고로 축복하시는 길이 바로 이 말씀대로 사는 길이다. 승리 하시는 여러분 되시기를 축원한다.

You shall have no other gods before Me.

Introduction

I read a video clip of professor Kim Hyung-Seok and he was a famous professor that many people knew. When he would give his lectures, many people would come to listen to his lectures but when I watched one of his video clips, he is now 106 years old and his video was so interesting to watch. Professor Kim gave an important message during his lecture and he said that there are two types of people, one type of people who arrive early to appointments and people who are always running late. But looking at these two types of people, you can see their lifestyle clearly. Those who arrive early are people who are full of leisure and have peace in their lives. But people who are always running late, you can see that they are always out of breath and feel rushed all the time. Those who arrive early are always prepared and have the leisure to get ready for meetings. Those who are late to meetings, they are not ready for their meetings and are full of chaos. Those who are early, their hearts are full of leisure and stability. But those who are late, their hearts are full of anxiety and chaos. People who arrive early are able to prepare so they are able to have conversations that feel peaceful and comfortable. But those who are late, their meetings and conversations feel rushed and all over the place. This shows the difference between those who fail and those who are successful. Those who are always late, they are at a higher rate for failure and they make many mistakes. This is the same heart and posture we must have towards worship. If you are always late to worship then you are busy organizing and don’t have enough time to prepare. Those who are early to worship, you have time to pray and prepare your heart. When we live our walk of faith, this is so important. Today’s sermon is an important message. This is the first commandment that God gave to us. This message is directed to us. 

1. You shall have no other gods

(1) You (the saved one)

Verse 3 - This was the commandment and message that God first gave to Moses. God was giving the message to the people of the covenant. The people of the covenant were the people who were redeemed by the blood on the doorpost. Those who were people of the covenant, they were blessed tremendously by God. God blessed, guided, and protected the people of the covenant. This was the commandment that God gave to the people of the covenant. This was a great blessing given to the people of the covenant. This does not just apply to the Israelites but it also applies to us. We were freed from the bondage of hell and Satan, and we are the people of the covenant. We who were saved, the first message that God gave to us was this commandment, not to have other gods except God. Why did God give this commandment to the people of the covenant? 

Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” - What is absolute is that we who are saved, there is an invisible force that is always trying to break us down and destroy us. In other words, Adam and Eve who were sinless, Satan attacked them and the same Satan is trying to destroy us as well. The first way to victory is to not have other gods except God. What does it mean by no other gods except God meaning that God is talking about Himself, the Jehovah God. 

(2) No other gods

Mark 12:29 “Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.’ ” - This is one of the few scriptures in the Bible that speaks of God as the only God and also recites Deuteronomy 6:4. This is what we must understand. There are people who cannot distinguish God as one. We believe in one God but other religions like Judaism and Islam, they believe in many gods. The difference between us and those religions is monotheism. We believe in one and only God. That means that there is no other Creator God except God, Himself. There is only one Creator God. We must hold onto the fact that God is one God but also the Triune God. Who can one true God be a Triune God? From here, we must hold onto the Triune God. The Triune God is referring to the one nature and unity of God. In one God, there are three gods - our Father God, Jesus Christ the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit. We are worshiping the Jehovah God but in Judaism, they are worshiping many gods but they say that the Yahweh God is the most powerful God. But many people don’t believe and understand the concept of the Triune God. 

1 Corinthians 8:6 “Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.” - Paul explained to the Trinity God that there is one God the Father, He is the Creator God. There is one Lord, who is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is our master and Yahweh. This means that Jesus Christ is also the Creator, in whom are all things and through whom we live as it is written. The Triune God all participated in the work of creation as well as the work of salvation. In order to save us, the Triune God worked. There was one God but three persons came in form to save us. If we understand this, then we understand who God is. God is the Father of the covenant and through the blood of the covenant, we can understand who God is. The young lamb came from the blood of the covenant. Without the blood of the covenant, we cannot know how Jesus Christ is. In order to save us, God performed these great works. 

2. Before Me

(1) Before Me

“Before me” in Hebrew is “Lapanai” means that we should not have anything before or after God. We should not have any other gods before God as seen in the main scripture. When we talk about other gods, it is talking about how we should serve only our Creator God but mankind has made other gods and idols. What are these “gods” that this scripture speaks about? It is talking about gods that we have created that we cannot see with our eyes. Why has mankind created other gods and idols? All things started from Genesis 3, all corruption and greed came from the Tree of Good and Evil. This forbidden fruit caused mankind to fall into sin and corruption. If we really look at this, we can see that idolatry first started from Genesis 3, the forbidden fruit. 

1 John 2:16, 3:5 “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 3:5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.” - All sin starts from the lust of the flesh and our eyes. This means that all sin starts from the things of this world. We mankind have created idols because of our lust. All sin and corruption all starts from here. It all starts from things that we cannot see. 

Colossians 3:5 “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” - These are all of the idols that people worship. If we look at this, we can see that idolatry started from mankind and we need to discard all of those. 

Habakkuk 1:11 “Then his mind changes, and he transgresses; He commits offense, Ascribing this power to his god.” - The idols that people worship are their knowledge and sense of power. To people, this is their god. 

2 Timothy 3:2 “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.” - What is more scary is what we cannot see, the idols that we cannot see. Many people are being destroyed because of their idols and gods. God is saying that we need to discard all other gods and idols before us. How can we discard all of our gods and idols? There are two examples. 

(2) You shall have no other gods

One example was a rich man that came before Jesus on how he can have eternal life and this was there response of Jesus in Mark 10:17, 21, 22 “Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?’ ” 21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.’ 22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” - The rich man thought that he obeyed all of the commandments of God but when Jesus saw him, He disagreed. 

Jesus responded to the rich man when the rich man thought that he lived a righteous life in Mark 10:21 - The rich man went away looking sad after the response of Jesus. What was the point of the response of Jesus in Mark 10:21? This means that for this rich man, money was his god and idol. There are idols and gods that we cannot see that we need to discard. Because of our idols and gods, we will fail.  

Genesis 22:2, 12 “Then He said, ‘Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.’ 12 And He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.’ ” - Abraham loved Isaac so much that he ended up making Isaac into his idol so God tested Abraham. His precious son, Isaac, Abraham actually was about to kill his son before God. But when God saw Abraham’s action before God, God was able to see that Abraham did not make Issac into his idol. As a result, God provided a lamb on the behalf of Issac. Because of this, God blessed Abraham tremendously. We can see the blessings that God gave to Abraham, God also gave to his family line and descendants. This is the way to victory, to discard all of our idols and worship only God alone. 

3. The Watchmen's Mission

(1) Relaying the covenant of the Sovereign One

Isaiah 60:1 “Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.” - We are already children of God and as we live our lives, we must give glory to God. When we proclaim the word of God, then we are able to shine the light of God and give glory to God. 

(2) Prayer that moves the Throne

Isaiah 62:7 “And give Him no rest till He establishes And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” - When we pray then the power of the heavenly throne is upon us and moves. When we pray, the entire army of heaven moves for us. We are able to possess the power of the heavenly throne and God listens to every one of our prayers. God listens to all of our prayers and is ready to answer us. God said to never give Him rest because God wants to give you answers continuously. 

(3) Evangelism that moves the world

Isaiah 62:10 “Go through, Go through the gates! Prepare the way for the people; Build up, Build up the highway! Take out the stones, Lift up a banner for the peoples!” - We already possess victory so we just need to go out into the field. All we have to do is lift up the banner for the people and when we go out, then works of healing will take place. Our God is alive and the Triune God is still at work. May we receive answers in the name of Jesus Christ. 

Conclusion

What we must do is Deuteronomy 6:5 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” - When we do exactly this then God will give us all of the answers and blessings. God will open all doors for us and will give us all of the tremendous blessings.
