“홍해의 기적과 그 의미”

“여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 어찌하여 내게 부르짖느냐 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 앞으로 나아가게 하고 16 지팡이를 들고 손을 바다 위로 내밀어 그것이 갈라지게 하라 이스라엘 자손이 바다 가운데서 마른 땅으로 행하리라 17 내가 애굽 사람들의 마음을 완악하게 할 것인즉 그들이 그 뒤를 따라 들어갈 것이라 18 내가 바로와 그의 모든 군대와 그의 병거와 마병으로 말미암아 영광을 얻으리니 내가 바로와 그의 병거와 마병으로 말미암아 영광을 얻을 때에야 애굽 사람들이 나를 여호와인 줄 알리라 하시더니 19 이스라엘 진 앞에 가던 하나님의 사자가 그들의 뒤로 옮겨 가매 구름 기둥도 앞에서 그 뒤로 옮겨 20 애굽 진과 이스라엘 진 사이에 이르러 서니 저쪽에는 구름과 흑암이 있고 이쪽에는 밤이 밝으므로 밤새도록 저쪽이 이쪽에 가까이 못하였더라 21 모세가 바다 위로 손을 내밀매 여호와께서 큰 동풍이 밤새도록 바닷물을 물러가게 하시니 물이 갈라져 바다가 마른 땅이 된지라 22 이스라엘 자손이 바다 가운데를 육지로 걸어가고 물은 그들의 좌우에 벽이 되니 23 애굽 사람들과 바로의 말들, 병거들과 그 마병들이 다 그들의 뒤를 추격하여 바다 가운데로 들어오는지라 24 새벽에 여호와께서 불과 구름 기둥 가운데서 애굽 군대를 보시고 애굽 군대를 어지럽게 하시며 25 그들의 병거 바퀴를 벗겨서 달리기가 어렵게 하시니 애굽 사람들이 이르되 이스라엘 앞에서 우리가 도망하자 여호와가 그들을 위하여 싸워 애굽 사람들을 치는도다 26 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 네 손을 바다 위로 내밀어 물이 애굽 사람들과 그들의 병거들과 마병들 위에 다시 흐르게 하라 하시니 27 모세가 곧 손을 바다 위로 내밀매 새벽이 되어 바다의 힘이 회복된지라 애굽 사람들이 물을 거슬러 도망하나 여호와께서 애굽 사람들을 바다 가운데 엎으시니 28 물이 다시 흘러 병거들과 기병들을 덮되 그들의 뒤를 따라 바다에 들어간 바로의 군대를 다 덮으니 하나도 남지 아니하였더라 29 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 바다 가운데를 육지로 행하였고 물이 좌우에 벽이 되었더라 30 그 날에 여호와께서 이같이 이스라엘을 애굽 사람의 손에서 구원하시매 이스라엘이 바닷가에서 애굽 사람들이 죽어 있는 것을 보았더라 31 이스라엘이 여호와께서 애굽 사람들에게 행하신 그 큰 능력을 보았으므로 백성이 여호와를 경외하며 여호와와 그의 종 모세를 믿었더라” (출 14:15-31)

서론

오늘 출애굽기 가운데서도 가장 중요한 홍해를 지나가는 내용이다. 지금 시청한 영상 보면 알수 있듯이 홍해 사건은 인간이 꾸며낸 것이 아니라 과거의 실질적으로 일어난 일이다. 그런 의미에서 오늘 읽은 성경 말씀이 꾸며낸 이야기가 아니라 실질적 당시에 일어났던 역사적 일이라는 사실 우리가 붙잡고 가야 한다. 하나님께서 지금부터 3,500 년 전에 직접 이 모든것을 이루신 사실을 먼저 우리가 믿고 시작 해야 하는것이다. 저는 오늘 이 말씀 여러분에게 증거 할수 있게 되어 하나님께 정말 감사 드립니다. 또 우리 하나님께서 교회와 여러분들에게 주시는 메지가 너무나 풍성해서 얼마나 감사한지 모른다. 오늘 말씀 한구절씩 보면서 주신 하나님의 은혜에 동참 하시기를 바란다. 

1. 하나님의 함께 하심 God's Presence

(1) 지팡이를 내 밀라 "Lift up your rod"

출 Exodus 14:15-20

본문 15절 보면, “여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 어찌하여 내게 부르짖느냐 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 앞으로 나아가게 하고” 라고 나온다. 이스라엘 백성들이 원망할때 너희는 가만히 서서 하나님 하시는 일을 보라 하고 모세가 하나님께로 기도하러 나아간다. 이 말씀 보면 모세가 그냥 하나님 앞에 나아가지 않고 부르짖으며 기도하며 하나님 앞에 나아간다. 이에 하나님이 걱정 말고 이제 이스라엘 백성들 데리고 나아가라 하신다. 그런데 그냥 가라 하지 않으시고 16절에, “지팡이를 들고 손을 바다 위로 내밀어 그것이 갈라지게 하라”. 부르짖으면서 기도만 하지 말고 네가 들고 있는 지팡이를 앞으로 내밀라 그러면 홍해가 갈라질것이다 하셨다. 지금 하나님께서는 부르짖는 기도도 중요 하지만 권세를 사용하는 권세의 기도를 행하라 말씀 하시는것이다. 지난번에도 말씀 드렸다시피 모세의 지팡이는 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도하는것 을 의미한다. 모세가 지팡이를 들어 홍해를 가르는것은 예수 그리스도 이름으로 기도할때 일어나는 역사를 설명 하는것이다. 그러면서 17-18절에 이어서 말씀 하시기를, “내가 애굽 사람들의 마음을 완악하게 할 것인즉 그들이 그 뒤를 따라 들어갈 것이라 내가 바로와 그의 모든 군대와 그의 병거와 마병으로 말미암아 영광을 얻으리니” 예수 그리스도 이름의 권세로 기도할때 내가 그것으로 말미암아 영광 받겠다 하시는것이다. 어떤 상황에는 권세의 기도 해야 할 필요가 있다. 우리는 하나님 자녀로 권세를 부여 받았다. 이 권세 통해 하나님께서 영광 받으실것을 설명 하시는것이다. 18절 말씀 이어서 보면, “내가 바로와 그의 모든 군대와 그의 병거와 마병으로 말미암아 영광을 얻으리니 내가 바로와 그의 병거와 마병으로 말미암아 영광을 얻을 때에야 애굽 사람들이 나를 여호와인 줄 알리라 하시더니”, 우리가 기도할때 응답 하시며 당신이 참 하나님 되심을 나타내시는것이다. 여기서 여호와 하나님은 언약의 하나님을 뜻한다. 말씀을 주시고 말씀을 성취하시는 하나님이시다. “나를 여호와인 줄 알리라 하시더니” 내가 네게 이른대로 이루는 참 하나님이다 선포 하시는것이다. 세상 그 어떤 신, 종교도 말한 그대로 성취 되지 않는다. 이 세상 유일한 여호와 하나님만이 말씀 그대로 성취 하시는 유일신이다. 그래서 여호와 하나님만이 참 하나님 되시는것이다. 이어서 애굽 군대가 19절에 쳐들어오는 내용이 나온다, “이스라엘 진 앞에 가던 하나님의 사자가 그들의 뒤로 옮겨 가매 구름 기둥도 앞에서 그 뒤로 옮겨” 드디어 애굽 군대가 모습을 드러낸것이다. 구름기둥 옆에 있던 앞서가던 하나님의 사자가 그것을 보고 이스라엘 백성 뒤로 가 지킨것이다. 여기서 보이지않던 하나님의 사자가 나타났는데 누구인가 하는것이다. 24절에 정확하게 나온다, “새벽에 여호와께서 불과 구름 기둥 가운데서 애굽 군대를 보시고 애굽 군대를 어지럽게 하시며”. 구름기둥 가운데 있었던 분이 바로 여호와 하나님 이셨다 라는 말이다. 하나님이 나오셔서 그들의 뒤로 가신것이다. 이게 어떤 의미인가. 성삼위 하나님중에 사람들 눈에 보이신 제 2위 되신 하나님을 지칭하며, 이분이 나중에 육신을 입고 오신 그 분 이라는 말이다. 여호와의 이름으로 나타나 뒤에 애굽 군대를 가로막은것이다. 하나님께서 친히 애굽군대와 이스라엘 백성 사이를 가로막으신것이다. 지금 이스라엘 백성들이 원해서 이렇게 하신것도 아니다. 하나님이 이스라엘, 자기 백성이 어려움 당할것을 아시고 미리 가서 막으신것이다. 이것이 바로 하나님이 우리를 보호하시는 모습이다. 하나님은 자기 백성들이 어려움 당하는것을 절대 기뻐하지 않으신다. 반드시 보호하고 계신다. 지금도 하나님은 우리를 보호하고계신다. 상상초월의 놀라운 능력으로 우리를 보호중이시다. 어떤 방법으로 보호 하시는지 20절에 나온다, “애굽 진과 이스라엘 진 사이에 이르러 서니 저쪽에는 구름과 흑암이 있고 이쪽에는 밤이 밝으므로 밤새도록 저쪽이 이쪽에 가까이 못하였더라”. 여호와의 사자가 애굽군대 앞으로 가고 난 다음에 구름기둥 불기둥도 뒤로 옮겨졌다. 애굽 군대가 있는 쪽은 흑암에 완전히 덮혀있는 모습니다. 여기서 나온 “흑암” 에 호샤크 라는 단어가 사용되었다. 원어를 보면 출애굽기 10:22에 흑암재앙때 내렸던 깜깜한 흑암 을 말한다. 애굽군대들이 쫓아가는길에 흑암을 덮으시니 깜깜해서 한치 앞도 보이지가 않는것이다. 더듬으며 다녀야 할 정도로 어두웠던것이다. 그 흑암으로 하나님께서 막으시니 애굽 군대가 움직이지 못하고 꼼짝 갇히게 된다. 반면 이스라엘 백성들은 어떠했나? “이쪽에는 밤이 밝으므로 밤새도록 저쪽이 이쪽에 가까이 못하였더라” 이스라엘 백성쪽에는 불기둥이 환하게 비치며 갈 길이 밝히 보인것을 볼수있다. 이러한 일은 출애굽때만 있는 일이 아니다. 여러분 혹시 지금 어려움 속에 계시는가. 지금 여러분은 하나님의 불, 구름기둥의 보호 아래 계심을 잊지 마시라. 우리는 이미 이 속에 살고있다. 내 모든 형편, 처지를 하나님께서 너무나도 잘 알고 계신다. 위험한것, 하나님께서 다 막으시면서 너희들은 나아가라, 내가 인도 하겠다 하시는것이다. 하나님께서 원하시는 그 길을 가기만 하면 되는것이다. 하나님께 감사하는 여러분 되시기를 바란다. 

(2) 모세 지팡이의 능력 The Power of Moses' Rod

출 Exodus 15:21-22

21절에 놀라운 내용 이어서 기록되었다,“ 모세가 바다 위로 손을 내밀매 여호와께서 큰 동풍이 밤새도록 바닷물을 물러가게 하시니 물이 갈라져 바다가 마른 땅이 된지라” 모세가 지팡이를 바다로 뻗은 순간 어떤 일이 있었나. 갑자기 동풍이 불기 시작한것이다. 아라비아 사막에서부터 이러한 바람이 불기 시작하더니 바다가 갈라질정도로 강하게 일었다. 바다가 그로인해 갈라지면서 바닥이 보일정도로 분것이다. 놀라운 말씀이 여기에 숨어있다, “큰 동풍이 밤새도록 바닷물을 물러가게 하시니”, 그 동풍이 밤새도록 불렀다는것은 이스라엘 백성들이 전부 바다를 건널때까지 바닷물이 벽이 되게 바람이 물을 갈랐다는것이다. 영상에서 보았듯이 홍해에 대한 신학적 주장이 세가지로 갈린다. 출 15:4 말씀 보면 홍해라고 말하면서 “얌수프” 라고 나온다. 이는 “갈대바다” 라는 의미이다. 이것은 곧 홍해 바다가 아니라 애굽 동북쪽에 갈대호수 라고 불리는 그 부근을 지난것이다 하는 주장이다. 두번째 주장은 전통적으로 옛날부터 이해되어진 수해즈운하 쪽으로 내려왔다 라는것이다. 그런데 여기서 문제는 그 지역의 폭이 1km 정도 밖에 되지 않는것이다. 그래서 주석에도 보면 이러한 문제가 있다 하면서 여러 각도로 해석을 한다. 그가 문제를 제기하는 정확한 부분은 600대가 넘는 애굽의 병거들과 병사들과 마병들이 쫓아갔는데, 그정도 폭으로는 병사들만으로도 꽉 차게된다. 모두 수장 되기에 부족한 거리라는 말이다. 그러면서 그때 당시에는 면적이 더 넓었을것이다 하는 가능성도 이야기 하고있다. 우리가 본 마지막 아카마 주장은 발견된지 얼마 되지 않는다. 여기는 길이가 12-15키로미터 정도 된다. 다른곳은 수심이 1000m 이상 되는데 영상에 나온 특정 부근만 100m 정도 되는 길이 나있는것이다. 길의 넓이도 2-5km 정도 되는 공간이 나온다. 아까 영상에도 나왔듯이 여의도의 약 4배나 되는 넓은 면적의 공간도 있었다. 그 많은 사람들이 2-5km 되는 넓이의 갈라진 바다 사이로 함께 걸어간것이다. 그러면 건너가는 시간이 약 8시간 정도 되었을것 이라는 추정이 나온다. 그렇게 성경의 많은 의문들이 풀리는것을 볼수가있다. 더 중요한것은 22절 말씀이다, “이스라엘 자손이 바다 가운데를 육지로 걸어가고 물은 그들의 좌우에 벽이 되니”. 이 벽이라는 단어가 히브리어로 “호마” 라는 단어인데, 그냥 벽이 아니라 거대한 성벽을 의미한다. 수심이 100m 정도인데 그렇게 높고 거대한 성벽같은 물로된 벽 사이를 이스라엘이 지나게 된것이다. 당시에 홍해를 건넜을 백성들의 마음을 한번 상상해 보시라. 얼마나 감격스러운 마음을 가지고 건넜을까 생각이든다. 하나님의 이러한 놀라운 역사는 그때만이 아니라 지금도 이루어지고 있다. 왜냐, 하나님은 그때나 지금이나 자기의 백성을 동일하게 사랑하시기 때문이다. 이 말씀 읽으면서 아, 이러한 마음 가지고 지금도 우리를 사랑하시고 계시구나 느낀다. 이 시간 염려 근심 모두 다 완전히 버리시기를 바란다.  

2. 홍해 기적의 의미 The Meaning of the Miracle of the Red Sea

(1) 삶과 죽음의 근본적 원인 The Fundamental Cause of Life and Death

출 Exodus 14:23-28

23절, “애굽 사람들과 바로의 말들, 병거들과 그 마병들이 다 그들의 뒤를 추격하여 바다 가운데로 들어오는지라” 물로 된 벽 사이로 애굽 사람들이 따라 들어온 상황인것이다. 수심이 100미터 정도 되니 애굽 군대가 높은 경사로부터 저 멀리 이스라엘이 도망가는 모습을 보고 따라간것이다. 어떤일이 있는지 24절에 나온다, “새벽에 여호와께서 불과 구름 기둥 가운데서 애굽 군대를 보시고 애굽 군대를 어지럽게 하시며’. 애굽 군대가 이스라엘 백성들을 거의 따라잡게 된것이다. 그러나 절대 하나님은 당신의 백성 포기 하지 않으신다. 25절, “그들의 병거 바퀴를 벗겨서 달리기가 어렵게 하시니 애굽 사람들이 이르되 이스라엘 앞에서 우리가 도망하자 여호와가 그들을 위하여 싸워 애굽 사람들을 치는도다”. 하나님께서 자기 백성들을 끝까지 보호 하고 계신다. 이것을 애굽 군대가 비로소 깨닫게 된것이다. 여호와께서 저들을 위하여 싸우시는구나! 도망가자 하며 왔던 길로 돌아가려 한다. 그때 하나님이 26절에 말씀 하신다, “여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 네 손을 바다 위로 내밀어 물이 애굽 사람들과 그들의 병거들과 마병들 위에 다시 흐르게 하라 하시니”. 하나님께서 그동안 이스라엘의 공포의 대상이었던 애굽군대를 완전히 수장해 버리신다. 덕분에 이스라엘 백성들은 한명도 다치지 않고 빠져나온다. 쫒아가던 애굽 군대는 전멸했다. 원래 바다앞에 가로 막혔을때 이스라엘 백성들은 죽은목숨 이었다. 어떻게 이스라엘 백성들은 전부 다 살고 애굽 군대들은 다 죽은것인가. 딱 한가지로 구분된다. 이스라엘 백성들은 어린양의 피의 능력을 소유 하였고 애굽 군대는 그러지 못했다. 삶과 죽음이 어디서 결정되느냐 하는것이다. 멸망과 실패가 어디서 결정되는가. 사람의 힘이나 부나 권력이 아니라 양의 피의 유무에 있는것이다. 오직 그것으로 모든것이 결정된다. 이 사실 붙잡으시라.

(2) 홍해 구원의 참 의미

출 Exodus 14:30-31

고전 1 Corinthians 10:2, 롬 Romans 6:4, 창 Genesis 17:10-11

 30절, “그 날에 여호와께서 이같이 이스라엘을 애굽 사람의 손에서 구원하시매 이스라엘이 바닷가에서 애굽 사람들이 죽어 있는 것을 보았더라”. 이스라엘이 두려워 떨던 애굽 군대가 이제는 전멸했다. 홍해가 그들을 덮은것이다. 아주 중요한 의미다. 이것은 이스라엘 백성들에게는 이제 돌아갈 길이 완전히 막혔다는 의미다. 돌아갈 길이 없다는 것은 그들이 받은 구원은 영원한것이다 라는 의미가 있다. 한번 구원은 영원한 구원인사실이다. 31절, “이스라엘이 여호와께서 애굽 사람들에게 행하신 그 큰 능력을 보았으므로 백성이 여호와를 경외하며 여호와와 그의 종 모세를 믿었더라” 이스라엘이 하나님의 놀라운 능력을 다시한번 눈으로 확인 한것이다. 애굽 군대들이 모두 전멸하고 홍해도 완전히 닫혔다. 이것은 노예의 과거의 삶이 완전히 끝난것을 의미한다. 새로운 땅에서 하나님이 행하실 새로운 일을 바라보며 희망 속에 살수 있게 된것이다.  고전 10:2에 이 내용이 나온다, “모세에게 속하여 다 구름과 바다에서 세례를 받고”. 구름 아래 있었다는 말은 하나님의 능력 아래에 있었다는 말이다. 모세의 인도를 받아 홍해 속으로 들어간것이다. 모세를 따라갔을때 종된 삶, 노예체질이 그때 전부 죽었다는 의미이다. 이것이 바로 세례의 의미와 같다 라고 말하는것이다. 로마서 6:4, “그러므로 우리가 그의 죽으심과 합하여 세례를 받음으로 그와 함께 장사되었나니 이는 아버지의 영광으로 말미암아 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리심과 같이 우리로 또한 새 생명 가운데서 행하게 하려 함이라”. 홍해바다 들어갈때 이스라엘 백성들 뿐만 아니라 모세도 간것이다. 선지자, 제사장의 역할 감당한 모세도 같이 백성들과 함께 들어가 죽었고 홍해를 지나옴으로 다시 생명으로 옮겨진것이다. 이것은 바로 그리스도가 우리와 함께 죽음가운데로 들어가시고 우리와 함께 살아나심을 의미한다. 세례를 받음으로 우리의 옛 사람이 완전히 바뀐것을 의미한다. 운명과 사주팔자 완전히 끝난것을 의미한다. 과거에 지긋지긋한 문제 완전히 끝난것을 의미한다. 이제 새로운 삶, 부활의 삶을 사는것이다. 이것은 구약시절에 아브라함이 행한 할례에서도 볼수 있다. 신약의 세례는 구약의 할례와 같다. 창 17:10-11 “너희 중 남자는 다 할례를 받으라 이것이 나와 너희와 너희 후손 사이에 지킬 내 언약이니라 11 너희는 포피를 베어라 이것이 나와 너희 사이의 언약의 표징이니라”. 이것을 하나님이 아브라함에게 말씀 하실때 그의 나이가 99세였다. 아무 힘도 기력도 없는 아브라함이었다. 너무 늙어 자식을 낳을수도 없는 상황인데 할례를 받으라 하신것이다. 네 힘으로 불가능 하느냐? 할례를 받아라, 네 후손을 약속하겠다 이 말씀이다. 할례를 받으면 새로운 삶을 살고 변화된 인생을 살게 될것이라 하는 의미로 아브라함에게 말씀 하신다, 네 이름을 “아브람” 이라 하지 말고 “아브라함” 이라 바꾸라. 아브람은 “높은 사람” 이라는 뜻인데 아브라함은 “열국의 아버지” 라는 의미를 가지고 있다. 사래는 “공주” 라는 뜻이고 사라는 “열국의 어머니” 라는 뜻이다. 할례를 받음으로 열국의 아비, 어미가 될것이다 하시는말이다. 놀라운 일이 생긴다. 아브라함이 할례를 받고 정말로 인생이 변화된다. 그렇게 힘도 능력도 없는 현실에 아들을 낳게 된것이다. 사라도 그 축복을 받게 된다. 나중에 사라가 죽고 140세가 된 아브라함이 구드라 라는 아내를 취한다. 그 아내 통해 6명의 자녀를 더 낳게 된다. 할례를 받고 난 뒤에 완전히 새로운 인생이 된것이다. 다시말해 인생이 재창조 되는 능력을 우리가 볼수 있는것이다. 할례와 세례는 바로 이 재창조를 의미한다. 할례나 세례나 어린양의 피, 이 모든것이 누구를 상징하는가. 바로 예수 그리스도이다. 이 예수 그리스도 붙들면 재창조의 역사가 너희 삶에 일어날것이다 말씀 하시는것이다. 모든 문제의 답은 예수 그리스도이다. 예수 그리스도 붙잡으면 내 운명, 사주팔자 바뀐다. 내 삶이 완전히 재창조 되는 역사가 일어난다. 죽음에서 삶으로 바뀐다. 이 언약 붙잡는 여러분 되시기를 바란다. 성경에 언약이 이런식으로 우리에게까지 내려왔다. 

3. 여자의 후손 The Offspring of the Woman

(1) 여자의 후손 The Offspring of the Woman

창 Genesis 3:15

우리가 붙잡을 언약의 시작이다. 여자의 후손의 언약, 창세기 3:15 부터 시작 되었다. 원죄, 사단, 하나님 떠난것 에서 해방됨을 말한다. 출애굽 통해서 어린양의 피의 능력을 보여주신것이다. 

(2) 어린양의 피의 능력 The Power of the Lamb's Blood

출 Exodus 14:30

오늘 본문 출 14:30에 보면 나온다, “ 그 날에 여호와께서 이같이 이스라엘을 애굽 사람의 손에서 구원하시매 이스라엘이 바닷가에서 애굽 사람들이 죽어 있는 것을 보았더라”. 양의 피 바른 백성들은 완전한 해방을 누린다. 그동안 붙잡혔던 애굽 이라는 운명에서 완전히 해방 된다.

(3) 성육신 하신 그리스도 The Incarnate Christ

마 Matthew 1:21-23

 그 주인공이 성육신하신 예수 그리스도다. 마 1:21-23, “아들을 낳으리니 이름을 예수라 하라 이는 그가 자기 백성을 그들의 죄에서 구원할 자이심이라 하니라 22 이 모든 일이 된 것은 주께서 선지자로 하신 말씀을 이루려 하심이니 이르시되 23 보라 처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이요 그의 이름은 임마누엘이라 하리라 하셨으니 이를 번역한즉 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다 함이라”. 바로 임마누엘로 오실 분 이라고 하는데 그분이 성육신 하셔서 모든것을 완성하신 그리스도다. 언약 붙잡은 자는 누구든지 승리했다. 

결론 Conclusion

The Miracle of the Red Sea and its Significance 홍해의 기적과 그 의미 (Exodus 출 14:15-31)

15 And the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward. 16 But lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. 17 And I indeed will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them. So I will gain honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, his chariots, and his horsemen. 18 Then the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gained honor for Myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.” 19 And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. 20 So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night. 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 And the Egyptians pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 Now it came to pass, in the morning watch, that the Lord looked down upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and He troubled the army of the Egyptians. 25 And He took off their chariot wheels, so that they drove them with difficulty; and the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the face of Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians.” 26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come back upon the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.” 27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 Then the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained. 29 But the children of Israel had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 30 So the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.

Introduction

The Event of the Red Sea was not man made but it was a historical event. With this in mind, the Biblical passage that we read actually happened and we must hold onto it. God 3,500 years allowed all of these events to occur. I am thankful to God that I am able to relay this message to you all. The message that God has given to me today, I am very thankful for it. May we receive God’s overflowing grace today. 

1. God's Presence

(1) "Lift up your rod"

Verses 15-20 - The entire Egyptian army was chasing after them and the Israelites were complaining so Moses reassured the Israelites and went before God and started praying. Moses didn’t just pray to God but Moses was crying out to God. God reassured Moses and commanded Moses to take the Israelites to go forth. 

Verse 16 - God said for Moses to not just cry out in prayer but for Moses to raise his rod up to the sky before the Red Sea. God was showing that it is not only to pray crying out but God wants Moses to use authority prayer. What does the rod of Moses signify? It signifies it using the name of God and the power of the name of Jesus Christ. This shows that when you pray in the name of Jesus Christ, then it has the power to even split the Red Sea.  

Verse 17 - When you use the power of the name of Jesus Christ then God said that He will be glorified. When a problem comes and we use authoritative prayer, then we can experience God’s power. As a child of God, we have the authority of God. If we use the authority of God, then God will be glorified. 

Verse 18 - When we pray, God will answer us and show us that He is the Almighty God. Jehovah God means that God is the God of the covenant. God of the covenant is God who gives us His word and fulfills it. This means that God will give us His word and He is also the one who will fulfill His covenants. There are no other gods from other religions who will give its word and fulfill it. Only God is capable of giving us His word and fulfilling it. That is why God is the God Almighty. 

Verse 19 - The Egyptian army was chasing after the Israelites but when the angel of the Lord saw this, the angel of the Lord started protecting the Israelites from the back. Who was the angel of God? 

It was the angel of God who was protecting the Israelites as seen in verse 24. God was with the angel of God and the pillar of cloud protecting the Israelites. What does all of this mean? God was blocking the Egyptian army and was dividing the Israelites and the Egyptians. This was not what the Israelites asked God to do but God knew that the Israelites were in trouble so God blocked the Egyptian army. This shows when God protects His children. God does not take pleasure when His children are suffering. God is always watching over us and protecting us. With great love, God is watching over us. 

Verse 20 - The pillar of cloud was protecting the Israelites from the front and back. This was showing that God was covering darkness and the Egyptian army. This darkness that is referred to here is the same darkness that came upon Egypt during the 10 plagues. God was blocking the Egyptian army with darkness so that they couldn’t see anything before them and couldn’t move. But what about the Israelites? There was complete light where the Israelites were moving. We could see God guiding the Israelites with light with the pillar of light so they could see. This blessing does not just apply to the Israelites? Do you have a problem? May the pillar of fire of God continue to guide you. God is protecting you with the pillar of cloud and fire. God knows all the problems that you are facing right now. God is promising that He will continue to protect you so that you can continue to move. If you just go where God wants you to go, then God will continue to protect you. Give thanks to God. 

(2) The Power of Moses' Rod

Verses 21-22 “” - The moment Moses raised the rod before the Red Sea, what happened? Great winds started blowing from the Arabic desert towards the Red Sea. The wind was blowing so strong that it split the Red Sea for the Israelites to cross through. God made sure the winds continued to blow until the Israelites were able to cross completely through the Red Sea. We just watched the video but there are three theories regarding the splitting of the Red Sea. One theory states it wasn’t the Red Sea that split but the Israelites crossed another river, through the Sea of Reeds (Yam Suph). This theory explains that the strong winds of the East could’ve pushed the water back exposing the land for the Israelites to cross. The second theory is that they crossed the sea, through the northern region of the Gulf of Suez. But the problem with this theory is that the distance is only 1 kilometer, which means it’s too short of a distance. The support that there was a problem with this theory was that there were 600,000 Egyptian chariots that were chasing the Israelites. Which means that if the distance was only 1 kilometer then the Egyptians would’ve caught up with the Israelites in no time. That is why it is interpreted that the Gulf of Suez was larger and longer. The distance of the Gulf of Aqaba is about 12-15 kilometers long and wide. And, the depth of the Gulf of Aqaba is really deep, approximately 2,000 meters deep. And imagine this, the Israelites crossing through a body of water that is so deep. Many scientists and theologians predict that it would’ve taken the Israelites about 8 hours to cross and walk through it. We can see all of the misinformation of the Bible is all cleared up now. 

Verse 22 - As the Israelites were crossing the Red Sea, the walls of water that formed around them as they crossed was about 100 meters long. And, God allowed them to walk through this, the walls formed by the strong winds that God bought forth. Let us think about the heart and minds of the Israelites as they were crossing the Red Sea. Imagine how astounding it must have been for them to cross the Red Sea. God’s great works did not just take place for the Israelites but God continues to work for us. This shows that God loves Israelites and He loves us as well. As I was meditating on this, I realized that God truly loves us and I am very thankful for this. Let us discard all of our worries and disbelief at this time. 

2. The Meaning of the Miracle of the Red Sea

(1) The Fundamental Cause of Life and Death

Verses 23-28 - The Israelites were crossing the Red Sea, the Egyptian army started getting closer to them. Since the Israelites were crossing through the Red Sea, they see the Egyptian army chasing after them and the Egyptians thought that they could catch up to them. 

Verse 24 - Since the Egyptians were chasing the Israelites on horseback, the Egyptians thought that they could catch up to them. But you have to know that God protects His children till the end. 

Verse 25 - Until the end, God protected the Israelites. The Egyptians were able to finally see that God was fighting for the Israelites so the Egyptians started to flee. 

Verse 26 - God caused the entire Egyptian army that was tormenting the Israelites to drown in the Red Sea. Because of this, none of the Israelites were hurt and they were able to cross successfully through the Red Sea. But every Egyptian soldier and army died. The Israelites should’ve died with the Egyptian army but how could this be? Why did all of the Egyptian army die but none of the Israelites died as well? There was only one reason? There is power behind the blood of the young lamb. For the Israelites, they possessed the power of the blood of the young lamb and the Egyptians did not possess this power. It is not about power but it is about the blood of the young lamb. Your life depends on this. May we hold onto this. 

(2) 홍해 구원의 참 의미

Verses 30-31 - The Israelites who were trembling in fear because of the Egyptians, they saw the dead bodies of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea. The Egyptian army drowned in the Red Sea but this was important. This shows that the Israelites cannot return back to Egypt. This shows that their salvation is eternal. One salvation is eternal salvation. 

Verse 31 - The Israelites are able to witness the great power of God before them. All of the Egyptian army died before their eyes and the Red Sea was closed now. This shows that their life as a slave was over. This shows the problem of their past was over. They are able to live a new life in the land of Canaan. 

1 Corinthians 10:2 “All were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.” - The fact that they were protected but the pillar of cloud means that they were protected by God. They were being guided by Moses, God’s prophet. We know that the life of a slave was death but the fact that they were saved, this shows the power of baptism. What died, it was the old nature of slavery of the Israelites that died. This shows the same meaning of baptism.

Romans 6:4 “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” - When they entered the Red Sea, not only did the Israelites go but Moses who was God’s prophet also entered the Red Sea with them. This shows that they were going through death but they gained new life when they came out of the Red Sea. This shows that when Jesus Christ died for us, we also died with Jesus as well on the cross. Through baptism, the old has gone and the new has come. Our fate and destiny has ended. Our past problems are all over. We have new life and we are a new creation. This shows the same meaning of circumcision during the time of Abraham. Baptism in the New Testament is the same concept of circumcision in the Old Testament. Through Jesus Christ, we are able to have the resurrection of new life. 

Genesis 17:10-11 “This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.” - Abraham was 99 years old when God gave this message to Abraham. This shows how old and weak Abraham was at this age but God promised Abraham a child and commanded Abraham to be circumcised. God promised Abraham a child if Abraham is circumcised. God promised Abraham a new life through circumcision. God told Abraham to change his name from Abraham to Abram. Abram means a person of a high place but Abraham means the father of many nations. Then, God commanded Sarai to change her name to Sarah, Sarai means princess and Sarah means the mother of all nations. Through circumcision, God promised that they will become father and mother of many nations. What was astounding was that Abraham did get circumcised and things did start changing for them. They were powerless but Sarai ended up getting pregnant with Isaac. Both Sarah and Abraham received great blessings. After Sarah passed away, Abraham married a woman named Keturah and they ended up having six more children. Things drastically changed for them. After they went through the covenant of circumcision, everything changed. This shows recreation, new life. Circumcision and baptism shows the covenant of new life, of recreation. Circumcision, baptism, and blood of the young lamb all represented Jesus Christ. If you hold onto Jesus Christ, then the power of recreation will come upon you. Then, all the answers to your problems come through Jesus Christ alone. When you hold onto Jesus Christ, your fate will change. If you hold onto Jesus Christ, you have a new life. You will be moved from death to life. Hold onto this covenant. 

3. The Offspring of the Woman

(1) The Offspring of the Woman

Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” - This is the eternal covenant that we must hold onto. This means that we have been freed from original sin, separation from God, and Satan. This is the power of the young lamb. 

(2) The Power of the Lamb's Blood

Verse 30 - Those who posted the blood of the young lamb, they were freed. All of the fate and destiny that they faced in Egypt, they were freed. Who is the main character of all of this? It is Jesus Christ. 

(3) The Incarnate Christ

Matthew 1:21-23 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us.’ ” - Jesus Christ will come with the name of Immanuel and He finished everything on this earth. Those who held onto God’s covenant, they were all victorious. 

Conclusion

Matthew 16:16-19 “Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' 17 Jesus answered and said to him, 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.' ” - This Biblical passage is so important. Do you truly believe in this? Do you truly believe that Jesus is the Christ and that He is the Son of God? Then, that is all that you need. God promised that He will build a church on this rock, the keys of heaven and earth will be given to us, and the Gates of Hades will not overcome us. If we truly believe that Jesus Christ is really the Christ and the Son of the living God, then we can start a new life.
