“언약받을 준비하는 이스라엘”

“모세가 내려와서 백성의 장로들을 불러 여호와께서 자기에게 명령하신 그 모든 말씀을 그들 앞에 진술하니 8 백성이 일제히 응답하여 이르되 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 우리가 다 행하리이다 모세가 백성의 말을 여호와께 전하매 9 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 내가 빽빽한 구름 가운데서 네게 임함은 내가 너와 말하는 것을 백성들이 듣게 하며 또한 너를 영영히 믿게 하려 함이니라 모세가 백성의 말을 여호와께 아뢰었으므로 10 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 백성에게로 가서 오늘과 내일 그들을 성결하게 하며 그들에게 옷을 빨게 하고 11 준비하게 하여 셋째 날을 기다리게 하라 이는 셋째 날에 나 여호와가 온 백성의 목전에서 시내 산에 강림할 것임이니 12 너는 백성을 위하여 주위에 경계를 정하고 이르기를 너희는 삼가 산에 오르거나 그 경계를 침범하지 말지니 산을 침범하는 자는 반드시 죽임을 당할 것이라 13 그런 자에게는 손을 대지 말고 돌로 쳐죽이거나 화살로 쏘아 죽여야 하리니 짐승이나 사람을 막론하고 살아남지 못하리라 하고 나팔을 길게 불거든 산 앞에 이를 것이니라 하라 14 모세가 산에서 내려와 백성에게 이르러 백성을 성결하게 하니 그들이 자기 옷을 빨더라 15 모세가 백성에게 이르되 준비하여 셋째 날을 기다리고 여인을 가까이 하지 말라 하니라.” (출 19:7-15)

서론

CCC에 김준곤 목사님이 어떤 사람과 만났다고 한다. 대화 중에 상대가 자신은 하나님을 믿지 않는다고 말했다. 그 이유로 하나님을 알 수 없기 때문이라고 했다. 그 말을 들은 목사님이 종이를 가져와 가운데에 큰 원을 그린 뒤 이 원이 세상의 모든 지식을 나타내는 것으로 친다면 당신이 가진 지식이 어느 정도 되겠습니까라고 물었다고 한다. 그 사람이 대답하기를, 아주 작은 일부일 것이라고 했다. 이에 목사님이, 그러면 알지 못하는 나머지 부분 가운데 하나님이 계실 가능성은 생각해 보지 않으셨습니까? 물었다고 한다. 이 말씀을 들으면서 한 가지 생각했다. 모두가 이 세상을 자기의 계획과 생각을 가지고 살아간다. 모두 자신의 뜻이 제일 옳은 줄로 알고 살아간다. 그러나 어떤 사건이나 일에 대해 하나님의 뜻과 계획을 전혀 모른다면 실패의 길로 갈 수 있다. 무슨 말씀이냐 하면, 우리가 살아가는 모든 일에 있어 하나님의 뜻을 먼저 찾는 것이 가장 현명하고 승리하는 방법 이라는 것이다. 우리가 성경을 읽거나 말씀을 들을 때에 항상 하나님의 모든 계획과 말씀은 우리에게 가장 선하고 축복된 방법이자 지름길임을 알아야 한다. 오늘 말씀을 통해 그 사실을 다시 한 번 점검해 보기를 바란다. 

1. 언약을 주시는 하나님 God Who Gives the Covenant

(1) 언약을 준비 Preparing to receive the Covenant

출 Exodus 19:7-8

신 Deuteronomy 29:1, 수 Joshua 8:33-34

오늘 본문 7절을 보면, “모세가 내려와서 백성의 장로들을 불러 여호와께서 자기에게 명령하신 그 모든 말씀을 그들 앞에 진술하니”. 모세가 “너희가 내 말을 순종하면 내 소유가 되고 제사장 나라가 되며 거룩한 나라가 될 것 이라” 하신 하나님의 말씀을 백성들에게 전하니 8절에 “백성이 일제히 응답하여 이르되 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 우리가 다 행하리이다 모세가 백성의 말을 여호와께 전하매”, 하며 하나님과 언약을 붙잡겠습니다 한다. 먼저 우리가 하나님과의 언약을 먼저 점검하고 넘어가야겠다. 먼저 “종적 언약” 을 생각해 보아야겠다. 이것은 하나님께서 일방적으로 우리와 맺으신 언약이다. 왜 이런 일이 생기는가? 하나님이 우리를 구원시키시는 일에 대해서는 종적 언약이 아니면 안 된다. 우리가 죽어 있는 존재로 어떻게 계약을 맺을 수가 있겠는가. 그런 우리를 살리는 언약이 바로 종적 언약이다. 그리고 “횡적 언약” 이 있다. 이것이 바로 쌍방 언약이다. 사람과 사람사이, 단체와 단체간의 계약을 맺을때는 이렇게 쌍방으로 맺는다. 옛날에는 언약을 맺을 때 짐승을 반으로 갈라 그 사이로 계약을 맺는 사람들이 걸어갔다. 이는 만일 누구 한 명이라도 이 언약을 어겼을 때 이 짐승이 둘로 갈라진 것처럼 죽음을 맞게 될 것이라는 의미인 것이다. 상호 간에 약속을 지킬 의무가 있는 것이 횡적 언약이다. 호렙산의 언약이 바로 여기에 속한다. 네가 내 말을 지키면, 내 소유가 되고 거룩한 나라가 될 것이라고 말씀하신 것이다. 또 신명기 29:1 말씀을 보면 “모압 평지 언약” 이 나온다. 하나님과 이스라엘 백성 간에 다시 한번 언약을 맺게 되는 사건이다. 내가 네게 모든 계명과 율법을 주었는데, 이 모든 것을 지키면 축복할 것이고, 지키지 않으면 저주를 받게 될 것이라는 내용의 언약이다. 여호수아 8:33을 보면, 여호수아가 이스라엘 백성들에게 에발산과 그리심산 사이에 두고 축복과 저주에 대해 선포하는 내용이 나온다. 이것을 지키면  너희들이 축복받게 될 것이라고 선포할 때 이스라엘 백성들이  “아멘” 하며 화답한다. 또 만일 지키지 않으면 너희들이 저주를 받게 될 것이라는 말에 다시 한 번 “아멘” 으로 답하며 계약을 맺는다. 그렇게 쌍방 간에 맺어지는 계약이 종적 언약이다. 그런데 종적 언약과 횡적 언약 간에 공통점이 있다. 이는 바로 두 언약 모두 백성들에게 축복을 주시기 위해 주신 복음적 언약의 말씀이라는 사실이다. 종적 언약의 예로 창 3:15 말씀을 볼 수가 있겠다. 타락한 인간들에게 하나님은 약속하신다. 여자의 후손을 통하여 건져내 주겠다고 말씀하셨다. 여자의 후손이 되신 그리스도를 통해 너희를 살려내겠다 하시는 일방적인 종적인 언약이었다. 죽음과 흑암의 권세로부터 우리 스스로는 빠져나올 수가 없으니 하나님께서 이 종적인 언약으로 내가 해결해 주겠다고 하신 것이다. 횡적 언약도 아주 복음적인 것을 알 수가 있다. 내가 지시한 말씀대로만 살아라, 그렇게 하면 내가 기뻐하는 성화의 길로 인도하겠다 하시는 말씀이다. 그렇게 내 소유가 되고 제사장 나라가 되고 거룩한 백성이 되는 축복을 받게 될 것이라는 말씀이다. 어떻게 해서라도 백성들을 축복의 삶으로 인도하시기 위해 이런 언약까지 체결하셔서 세세히 말씀을 가르쳐 주신 것이다. 그러나 이스라엘 백성들은 이것을 이루지 못한다. 그들의 불신앙으로 인해 불신자들이 당할 수밖에 없는 저주에 빠지는 모습을 볼 수가 있다. 언약을 통해 하나님은 축복을 주시고 올바른 길로 인도하시기 위해 계속해서 말씀을 주신다.   

(2) 대언자를 준비 Preparing the Mediator

출 Exodus 19:9

마 Matthew 2:9, 행 Acts 9:8, 2:3

 9절에 중요한 말씀이 나온다, “여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 내가 빽빽한 구름 가운데서 네게 임함은 내가 너와 말하는 것을 백성들이 듣게 하며 또한 너를 영영히 믿게 하려 함이니라 모세가 백성의 말을 여호와께 아뢰었으므로”. 이 말씀을 보면, 하나님께서 “빽빽한 구름 가운데” 친히 임하겠다고 하신 것을 볼 수가 있다. 성부 하나님께서 구름 가운데 친히 역사하시는 것이다. 참 놀라운 사건이다. 그런데 어째서 하나님께서 임하실 때 빽빽한 구름 가운데서 임하시겠다고 하셨을까? 하나님의 거룩하신 영광의 빛을 가려야만 이 사람들이 살 수가 있기 때문에 그런 것이다. 더럽고 타락된 인간은 하나님의 영광의 빛을 보게 되면 죽음을 당할 수밖에 없다. 백성들을 사랑하신 하나님은 자신의 모습을 가리며 말씀을 전하신다. 성부 하나님이 친히 내려오시는 모습이다. 성경을 보면 성부 하나님뿐만 아니라 성자, 성령 하나님도 내려오셨다. 성자 하나님이나 성령 하나님이 오실 때 다 불로 임하신 것을 볼 수가 있다. 성자 하나님은 예수님을 말한다. 막 2:9, “박사들이 왕의 말을 듣고 갈새 동방에서 보던 그 별이 문득 앞서 인도하여 가다가 아기 있는 곳 위에 머물러 서 있는지라”. 그 영광스러운 하나님께서 이 땅에 오실 때 별이 앞서 인도하여 비추는 가운데 임하신 것이다. 하나님께서 하늘의 영광을 감추시고 이 땅에 육신의 몸을 입고 오실 때의 모습을 설명한 것이다. 그런데 부활하신 예수님은 다르다. 행 9:8에 부활하신 주님께서 사도 바울 앞에 나타나신 내용이 나온다: “사울이 땅에서 일어나 눈은 떴으나 아무것도 보지 못하고”. 성자 예수님의 부활하신 영광스러운 모습을 보자마자 눈이 멀고 말에서 굴러떨어진 것이다. 눈을 붉히며 예수님을 잡으러 다니던 사도 바울이 예수님을 보자마자 눈이 멀고 말에서 떨어진 것이다. 성령 하나님이 임재하신 내용도 찾아볼 수 있다. 행 2:3, “마치 불의 혀처럼 갈라지는 것들이 그들에게 보여 각 사람 위에 하나씩 임하여 있더니” 오순절 마가다락방에 성령이 임할때 마치 불의 혀처럼 갈라지는것이 각 사람 위에 임한것이다. 이것은 믿는 사람의 마음속으로 성령의 내주가 임한 것이다. 예수 그리스도를 영접하는 순간 하나님의 영광스러운 빛이 우리 속에 임하게 된다. 이 사실을 믿으시는가? 우리에게 임한 빛은 형언할 수 없는 하나님의 영광스러운 빛이다. 하나님께서 이 땅에 임하시며 모세에게 말씀하시는 내용이 나온다. “내가 너와 말하는 것을 백성들이 듣게 하며” 놀라운 말씀이다. 우상들은 말을 하지 못한다. 살아 계신 하나님이 직접 말씀하신 것이다. 우리가 믿는 하나님은 실제적으로 살아 계시고 역사하시는 하나님이 되시는 사실을 붙잡아야겠다. 이런 살아 계신 하나님이 역사하시는 것을 보이겠다는 말씀이다. 여호와께서 언약을 맺으시는 것을 이스라엘 백성들로 보고 듣게 하시는 것을 임하시겠다는 말씀이다. 이렇듯 너희가 내 말씀을 지키게 되면 내 소유가 되고 제사장 나라가 되고 거룩한 백성이 될 것이라고 모세에게 말씀하시는 것을 백성들이 직접 듣도록 하신 것이다. 그 이유가 바로 이어서 나타난다, “너를 영영히 믿게 하려 함이니라”. 아주 중요한 말씀이다. 하나님의 종 모세가 전하는 모든 메시지는, 하나님께서 주신 언약의 메시지임을 백성들이 알게 하기 위하여 이렇게 하시겠다는 말이다. 모세 개인의 생각이 아니라 하나님 당신이 직접 주신 말씀을 전하는 것이라고 보여 주시려고 하신 것이다. 여기서 우리가 중요한 것을 붙잡아야겠다. 간혹 하나님을 직접 만나고 싶어 하거나 직접 보고 싶어 하는 사람들이 있다. 만나지 않게 하시는 것에 감사해야겠다. 만나는 순간에 죽을 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 대신 하나님께서 임재를 알리시는 방법이 있다. 우리가 말씀을 들음으로써 하나님을 만날 수가 있다. 강단 말씀으로 하나님을 만나는 귀한 시간으로 누리시기를 바란다. 모세가 하나님의 말씀을 전달 하였듯, 강단을 통해 하나님이 내게 말씀을 주시는구나 이 사실 붙잡게 될때 하나님 주시는 말씀 통해 응답 받고 그 말씀이 현장에 성취되는 역사가 나타나는 것이다.  

2. 언약을 받는 백성 The People Receiving the Covenant

(1) 각자 개인의 준비 Individual Preparation

출 Exodus 19:10-11

계 Revelation 22:14, 7:14 

여기서 언약을 맺을 때 아주 중요한 사항들을 이야기한다. 10절, “여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 백성에게로 가서 오늘과 내일 그들을 성결하게 하며”. 하나님을 만날 때 준비할 것이 있다, 이 말이다. 제일 중요한 것은 바로 “오늘과 내일 그들을 성결하게 하며”. 언약 받기 전에 우리가 먼저 성결해야 한다. 그 말인즉 우리의 죄의 문제를 청산해야 한다는 말이다. 우리가 예배를 드리러 올 때에 모든 것을 하나님 앞에 털어놓고, 청산해 놓고 깨끗한 마음으로 올 때에 큰 역사가 일어나는 것이다. 회개라는 것이 얼마나 귀중한 것인지 모른다. 히 8:12, “내가 그들의 불의를 긍휼히 여기고 그들의 죄를 다시 기억하지 아니하리라” 라고 말씀하신다. 어떤 죄를 지었다고 하여도 하나님 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 회개한다면 불쌍히 여겨 주시고 다시는 기억하지 않으시는 긍휼의 하나님 되심을 우리가 붙잡아야겠다. 두 번째로 그들의 옷을 빨게 하여라 했다. 하나님을 만나는데 옷을 빨아야 하는가 생각할 수 있다.  우리도 귀한 사람을 만날 때 옷차림에 신경을 써서 준비한다. 외모를 신경 써서 준비한다는 의미는 상대방에 대한 존경과 마음의 표시이다. 영국 여왕을 만날 때 지켜야 할 예절과 규범이 워낙 많아서, 그것만으로도 책 한 권이 나올 정도라고 한다. 인사하는 방법, 앉는 방법, 음식을 먹는 방법, 이 모든 것에 대한 메뉴얼이 있다고 한다. 하물며 하나님을 만난다고 한다면 이 얼마나 귀중한 것인가. 이 말씀에서 옷 이라 함은 몸과 마음을 상징하는 것이다. 계시록 22:14, “자기 두루마기를 빠는 자들은 복이 있으니 이는 그들이 생명나무에 나아가며 문들을 통하여 성에 들어갈 권세를 받으려 함이로다”. 두루마기를 빠는 자들이라고 나온다. 옷을 세탁하면서 몸과 마음을 준비하는 것이다. 어떻게 몸과 마음을 준비하는가? 계 7:14, “어린 양의 피에 그 옷을 씻어 희게 하였느니라”. 우리가 몸과 마음을 씻을 때 그리스도 어린양의 피가 아니면 씻어질 수 없다, 이 말이다. 우리의 모든 죄악과 연약함은 그리스도의 피만이 해결할 수 있다는 말이다. 이 언약을 여러분께서 꼭 붙잡으시기를 바란다. 세 번째로 11절, “셋째 날을 기다리게 하라 이는 셋째 날에 나 여호와가 온 백성의 목전에서 시내 산에 강림할 것임이니” 여기서 셋째 날은 부활의 날을 상징한다. 예수님이 무덤 속에 이틀 동안 계셨다. 그리고 사흘째 되는 날 부활하셨다. 셋째 날을 기다리게 하라 하는 말의 의미는 새 삶을 위해 둘째 날을 기다리라는 말이다. 오늘과 내일을 기다리라는 말이다. 그 기다림 중에 내 속에 아말렉을 정복하는 시간을 가지라는 말이다. 우리 속에 모든 흑암과 불신앙 버리는 시간을 가지라는 말이다. 성경에 기다림은 항상 기도를 나타낸다. 기도를 통해 우리가 승리하는 삶을 살아야겠다. 

(2) 백성들의 준비 Preparation of the People

출 Exodus 19:12

창 Genesis 3:24, 레 Leviticus 16:2, 히 Hebrews 10:19

12절,  “너는 백성을 위하여 주위에 경계를 정하고 이르기를 너희는 삼가 산에 오르거나 그 경계를 침범하지 말지니 산을 침범하는 자는 반드시 죽임을 당할 것이라.” 이스라엘 백성들이 반드시 지켜야 하는 일을 설명하고 있다. 하나님께서 왜 이런 경계를 만드셨을까? 이것은 창3:24 보면 경계가 이때 생겼음을 알 수가 있다. 아담과 하와가 범죄하고 나서 하나님은 이 둘을 에덴동산에서 내쫓으신다. 그리고 바로 “그룹” 들과 불칼을 두어 지키게 하신다. 만일에 들어오게 되면 즉시 죽음을 당할 수밖에 없는 것이다. 경계를 침범 하였기 때문이다. 하나님께서 치신 경계를 범하면 죽임을 당하게 될 것이라는 말이다. 백성들 스스로 하나님을 만날 수가 없다. 그 누구도 스스로 힘으로 하나님을 만날 수가 없었다. 이때부터 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 특별히 사랑하시고 축복하셔서 하나님을 만날 수 있는 길을 허락하셨다. 하나님께서는 세상 어떤 곳에도 없는 하나님을 만날 수 있는 성막을 이스라엘 백성들에게 허락해 주신다. 거룩한 나라가 되고 제사장의 축복을 받게 되었던 것은 그것이 바로 성막이라는 하나님이 계신 나라를 통해 가능하게 된 것이다. 그런데 레위기 16:2 말씀을 보면 성막을 만들어 놓고 나서도 사실상 백성들 전체 중에 제사장 한 사람만, 그것도 1년에 딱 한 번만 만날 수 있었던 것이다. 제사장도 하나님을 만날 수 있는 방법이 딱 하나 있는데, 그것은 바로 대속의 희생의 피, 양의 피를 가지고 들어가야만 하나님을 만날 수 있던 것이다. 그 자체만으로도 이스라엘 백성이 얼마나 큰 축복을 받았는지 모른다. 말 그대로 하나님이 함께하신 나라인 것이다. 그런데 성경에 더 놀라운 말씀이 기록된 것을 볼 수 있다. 히브리서 10:19, “그러므로 형제들아 우리가 예수의 피를 힘입어 성소에 들어갈 담력을 얻었나니”. 분명히 이스라엘 백성들 그 누구도 들어가지 못하고 대제사장에게만 허락되었는데 지금 이 구절을 보니 우리가 성소에 들어갈 담력을 얻었다고 말하는 것이다. 그가 누구이든 예수의 피에 힘입어 성소에 들어갈 담력을 얻게 되었다는 말이다. 예수님께서 우리를 위해 대속물이 되어 십자가에서 “다 이루었다” 하시는 순간에 성소에 있던 휘장이 위에서부터 아래로 찢어진 것이다. 예수님이 우리를 위하여 돌아가심으로 하나님과 우리 사이에 막혀 있던 모든 것이 찢겨 이제는 모든 문이 열린 것이다. 이제 들어갈 수 있는 방법이 생긴 것이다. 주님의 죽으심으로 문이 열렸기 때문에 그리스도 안에 속한 자는 누구든지 다 들어갈 수 있게 된 것이다. 그리스도의 십자가에 동참한 모든 하나님의 백성들은 마음껏 들어가 하나님을 만날 수 있는 축복을 갖게 된 것이다. 그리스도 안에서 하나님 나라의 백성이 되는 놀라운 축복을 받게 된 것이다. 우리는 이렇듯 어마어마한 축복을 받게 된 것이다. 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님을 모시는 나라가 되었다는 자부심 속에 세상을 호령하기도 했다. 제사장만 하나님을 만날 수 있었는데도 나라 전체가 이렇게 큰 자부심을 가지고 살았다. 우리는 그 제사장보다 더 큰 축복을 받았다. 지금 우리는 언제든 들어가서 마음껏 하나님을 향해 기도할 수 있게 되었다. 담대하게 들어가서 하나님을 아버지라 부르며 기도할 수 있는 신분이다. 이 모든 것이 그리스도의 피 덕분인 것이다. 이 그리스도의 구속의 피만 붙잡으면 그 어떤 문제도 해결된다. 그것이 어떤 일이든 나의 삶의 모든 성공과 실패의 키는 그리스도에게 있다는 사실을 꼭 붙잡으시라. 

3. 빛의 망대를 세우자 Let Us Establish a Bartizan of Light

(1) 오직의 정체성을 회복하라 Restore the Identity of "The Only"

삼상 1 Samuel 7:3

그래서 우리가 빛의 망대를 세워야겠다. 오직의 정체성을 회복하시기를 바란다. 삼상 7:3에 사무엘이 백성을 향해 말한다, “사무엘이 이스라엘 온 족속에게 말하여 이르되 만일 너희가 전심으로 여호와께 돌아오려거든 이방 신들과 아스다롯을 너희 중에서 제거하고 너희 마음을 여호와께로 향하여 그만을 섬기라 그리하면 너희를 블레셋 사람의 손에서 건져내시리라.” 정체성을 회복하는 방법이 무엇인가? 모든 불신앙을 버리고 너희 마음을 여호와께로 향하여 그만을 섬기는 것, 그것이 정체성을 회복하는 길이다. 정체성만 회복 했는데 우리를 블레셋 사람의 손에서 건져 내시는 축복을 받는다. 우리는 그리스도만 붙잡았을 뿐인데, 우리의 문제가 해결되어 버린다. 이것이 바로 성경의 약속이다. 믿으시는가? 붙잡으면 하나님이 해결 하신다 이 말이다. 

(2) 오직의 근원을 회복하라 Restore the Source of "The Only"

삼상 1 Samuel 7:9

두 번째로 잡을 것은 오직 근원을 회복하는 것이다. 근원은 어떻게 회복되는가? 삼상 7:9에 사무엘이 한 방법이다, “사무엘이 젖 먹는 어린 양 하나를 가져다가 온전한 번제를 여호와께 드리고 이스라엘을 위하여 여호와께 부르짖으매 여호와께서 응답하셨더라”. 어린 양 하나를 가져다가 온전한 번제를 드린다고 했다. 오직 그리스도를 붙잡고 기도하는 것이다. 하나님께서는 응답해 주신다. 이 응답을 받으실 줄 믿는다. 우리 하나님의 능력은 무한대임을 잊지 마시라. 어떤 것도 문제될 것이 없다. 

(3) 오직 전달할 미래를 회복하라 Restore the Future to Be Conveyed—"The Only"

삼상 1 Samuel 7:12

그렇다면 우리가 세 번째로 붙잡을 것은 전달할 미래를 회복하는 것이다. 삼상 7:12, “사무엘이 돌을 취하여 미스바와 센 사이에 세워 이르되 여호와께서 여기까지 우리를 도우셨다 하고 그 이름을 에벤에셀이라 하니라.” 사무엘이 어린 양을 번제로 드리니 하나님이 친히 블레셋을 막으신다. 그리스도를 붙잡았는데 이 문제가 해결된 것이다. 그것을 나의 언약으로 꽉 붙잡은 것이다. 여호와께서 여기까지 도우셨다고 고백한 것이다. 이것을 “에벤에셀” 이라 부른다. 이 축복과 역사가 지금도 동일하다. 왜냐하면, 이때 이스라엘을 도우신 하나님이 지금도 동일하게 역사하시고 우리를 돕고 계시기 때문이다. 이 언약을 꼭 잡으면 여러분의 인생에 어떤 것도 문제가 될 것이 없다. 완전히 해결되고 축복받으실 줄로 믿는다.

결론 Conclusion

마 Matthew 6:9

말씀을 맺겠다. 마태복음 6:9: 꼭 잡으시라. “그러므로 너희는 이렇게 기도하라 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지여, 이름이 거룩히 여김을 받으시오며. 여러분, 우리에게 막혔던 모든 문은 이미 완전히 열렸다. 예수님이 돌아가심을 통해 그리스도 안에 있는 자에게는 모든 문이 열렸다. 놀라운 축복을 주셨다. 하늘에 계신 하나님이 우리의 아버지이시다. 그러므로 우리가 하나님 앞에 영광만 돌리게 되면 하나님께서 완벽하게 인도 하실줄을 믿는다. 이 언약 잡을 때 여러분들이 참 응답을 받는 역사가 삶 속에 나타날 줄을 믿는다. 이번 한 주간도 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 귀한 시간 되시기를 축원한다. 

Israel Preparing to Receive the Covenant 언약받을 준비하는 이스라엘 (Exodus 출 19:7-15)

7 So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord. 10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11 And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not come near your wives.”

Introduction

In the Korea Campus Crusade for Christ (KCCC), there was a pastor named Joon Gon Kim. Pastor Kim met someone and while having conversation with that person, this person told him that he doesn’t believe in the existence of God. This is because we can’t know who God is. So pastor Kim took a paper and drew this person a picture, and told this person that within this circle, this represents all of the knowledge of the world. But think about how much do you think you know and how much knowledge do you think you have within this circle? This person replied that he only knows a small portion within this circle. The pastor who heard his response said then the rest of the stuff and knowledge that you don’t know, what is the possibility that God exists within the knowledge that you don’t know? I thought about something when I heard this story. As we live in this world, we live with the knowledge of what we know and what we plan to do with what we know. We try to live our best with what we know and people of this world think that they are living the best that they can with what little that they do know. But the reality is that most people will fail if they don’t know the plan of God. What I am trying to tell you is that we must find God’s plan with all things, this is the most wise thing to do and how to be the most successful. Whenever read the Bible or listen to God’s word, God’s plan is the most absolute and perfect. Let us confirm this today within this sermon. 

1. God Who Gives the Covenant

(1) Preparing to receive the Covenant

Verses 7-8 - If Moses said that if we listen and obey God's word, then we will become righteous and the most holy nation. When Moses proclaimed the word of God, all people responded that they would obey the word of God. In other words, the people were keeping and fulfilling God’s covenant. Let us talk about God’s covenant. First, we must speak about the vertical covenant. The vertical covenant is a one way path, a unilateral promise from God. This happened because when it comes to our salvation, it can only take place through the unilateral covenant, the vertical covenant. We must die then how can we fulfill this covenant? But the covenant that was able to save us was the vertical covenant, a unilateral promise from God. Then, there is the horizontal covenant. The horizontal covenant is not unilateral but bilateral. This promise takes place and happens between people and there has to be an action to fulfill this promise. What people would do is take animals and split them in half, and cross through them to keep a promise between two people. This would indicate that if you broke this promise, then you will be killed the same way, you will be split in half. 

We spoke last week regarding Mount Horeb, there was a covenant that was given there. God promised in Deuteronomy 29:1 “These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.” - There was another covenant that God made with the Israelites. 

Joshua 8:33-34 “Then all Israel, with their elders and officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark before the priests, the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, the stranger as well as he who was born among them. Half of them were in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel. 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and the cursings, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law.” - God said that if you keep God’s covenant, then you will be blessed. But God said that if you break God’s covenant, then you will be cursed. There is a commonality between the horizontal and vertical covenant. These both covenants were kept to bless the people of God from God. When you look at the vertical covenant, you can look at the Genesis 3:15 covenant. God gave this covenant when mankind became corrupt. God promised the offspring of the woman to save mankind. Only God could save us from death and the powers of darkness. This was what God promised us, we cannot save ourselves with our own power and will. The horizontal covenant is also the gospel way as well. If you keep God’s covenant, then you will be blessed. You will stand as people of God, be blessed, and as the holy nation. In order to bless us, God has given us His covenants. But the Israelites failed to keep God’s covenant. Due to their unbelief, they had no choice but to fall into curses because they made actions just like nonbelievers. That is why God continued to lead them the righteous way and towards blessings. 

(2) Preparing the Mediator

Verse 9 - God came down in a thick cloud before His people. This was astounding. God would come down in a thick cloud but why a thick cloud? In order to hide God’s shining glory and light, the light that would be too bright for mankind to see. Mankind who is covered in curses and sin, we are so unworthy to be able to stand before the presence of God. That is why God would appear before us covered in thick clouds. God, the Father, Himself came down in a thick cloud. God the Son also came down in a thick cloud. When God the Son came down, He would come down in fire. God the Son is Jesus Christ. 

Matthew 2:9 “When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.” - When the righteous Jesus Christ would come down to Earth, He would come down like a shining star. This was when Jesus Christ would come down in human form and be birthed through the Virgin Mary. 

Acts 9:8, 2:3 “Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 2:3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.” - This was when Saul saw Jesus Christ. The moment Saul saw the glorious form of God, Saul could not withstand the glorious image of God that he was blinded by God’s image. 

Acts 2:3 - This was the image of the Holy Spirit. This was when the Holy Spirit came upon Mark’s Upper Room like fire that was upon each person there. The moment we accept Jesus Christ, the glorious and shining light of Christ comes inside of us. This is amazing. Do you believe in this? The shining light of Christ is within us, you need to believe in this. 

When God came down to Earth, He spoke to Moses in verse 9 - This is astounding. Idols cannot speak but what spoke to us was the living God. The God that we believe in, it is not a God who died but this is the living God who exists in this world. This living God spoke here and is wanting to show us that He is alive and working. God said that if you listen to His words, then the Israelites will become a holy nation and they will be blessed. This was what God wanted Moses to hear. The words that God spoke to Moses was the covenant of God. This was not what Moses thought about it but it was the absolute word and covenant of God. We must hold onto the fact that people say that they want to talk to God and that we should ask God to come before them so that they can see Him. But we should be thankful that we are not able to stand before God. Because the moment you should see God is when you are dead. There is a way to meet God in another way. It is through the word of God. Through the pulpit message, may you meet God. Just like how Moses relayed the word of God, if you hold onto the pulpit message as God’s word then the word of God will be fulfilled in your life. 

2. The People Receiving the Covenant

(1) Individual Preparation

Verses 10-11 - When we meet God, we should be prepared. First, we must consecrate people and be cleaned. Before you receive God’s covenant, you need to be consecrated which means that we should be cleansed of our sins. Before we give worship to God, we need to lay down all of our problems and worries down before God. We need to come before God during worship time with a clean and pure heart. We need to repent before God before we give worship to God. Repentance is so important. 

Revelation 22:14, 7:14 “Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. 7:14 And I said to him, “Sir, you know.” So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” - No matter what sin it is, if we are able to bow down to God and pray, then God promised that He will forgive us and never remember that sin again. Secondly, God commanded that we need to wash our clothes. When we meet God, why should we wash our clothes? When we meet someone important, we try to wear nice and clean clothes. You try to make yourself presentable when you meet someone important, that is a sign of respect. When you meet the queen of Britain, there is a manual and book of rules of how to dress properly before you meet them. It also lists how to greet them, how to eat in front of them, and how to sit before them. When we meet God, God is so important and precious. How we dress represents our state of heart and mind. 

Revelation 7:14 - It is said to wash your robes. This means to prepare our heart and mind before we meet God. How do we prepare our body and mind? We must wash our clothes with the blood of the lamb. Only through the blood of the lamb can it solve our problems and to have repentance. Understand this. 

Verse 11 - The third day represents the day of resurrection. When Jesus Christ died, He laid in the tomb for two days. And on the third day, Jesus resurrected. What does it mean that Jesus would ascend on the third day? For the new life, they had to wait for two days. This means that for two days, we should prepare our mind and heart. During this time, we should discard and let go of our darkness and imprints inside of prayer. We should always wait and prepare in prayer. Through prayer, we can live a victorious life. 

(2) Preparation of the People

Verse 12 - These were the rules that the Israelites had to keep. If they didn’t keep these rules, then they would die. This was so extreme but why did God keep these boundaries that the Israelites had to keep? 

There was also a boundary that Adam and Eve had to keep as we can see in Genesis 3:24 “So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.” - When God drove mankind out of the Garden of Eve, God drew a boundary with a flaming sword. If they didn’t keep this boundary then God said that they would die. God told the Israelites that if they don’t keep the boundary, then they will die. Then, they cannot meet God. You cannot just meet God, you can’t go directly to God. During that time, God loved the Israelites so much and blessed them that He showed them a way to meet Him. God gave the Israelites a tabernacle so that they could meet God because God loved them so much. They were able to have the tabernacle because they were chosen people of God. Even after the tabernacle was given to them, as we can see here that only the high priest could meet God in the inner sanctuary in Leviticus 16:2 “And the Lord said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.” - The high priest could only meet God in the inner sanctuary only once a year. The high priest couldn’t just walk into the inner sanctuary but they had to sprinkle the young blood of the lamb to enter. This seemed to be a lot of work to just meet God but this was the only way to meet God back then. 

Hebrews 10:19 “Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus.” - Only the high priest could enter but through the blood of Jesus Christ, they were able to meet God. Now, anybody could meet God. How was this possible? It was through the blood of Jesus Christ. Through Jesus Christ, He shed His blood for us so that we could be atoned for our sins. The moment Jesus Christ said that it was finished on the cross, this meant that there was a wall that was between God and man was broken down. The moment Jesus Christ died on the cross for us, all the ways that blocked us from meeting God were all taken down. We could meet God once again through Jesus Christ. Those who are within Jesus Christ, anybody can meet God once again. Through the cross, all people of God could meet God once again. Through Jesus Christ, you can become children of God. This is the tremendous blessing that we have received. The Israelites felt so proud of this fact and felt the most blessed nation. They lived with great pride even though only a person, the high priest, could meet God. But now, we can all meet God and call out to God as our Father. Anyone can do this. This was possible through the blood of Jesus Christ. When we hold onto the blood of Jesus Christ then no problem is a problem for us. What determines if we fail or succeed is if we hold onto Christ or not. 

3. Let Us Establish a Bartizan of Light

(1) Restore the Identity of "The Only"

1 Samuel 7:3 “Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, ‘If you return to the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.’ ” - The way to restore your identity is when we discard all of our unbelief and obey God’s word with all of our heart. When we restore our identity then God will deliver us from all darkness and problems. When we hold onto Christ, then our problems will be solved. This is God’s promise to us. Do you believe in this? We must believe in this for God to work in our lives. 

(2) Restore the Source of "The Only"

1 Samuel 7:9 “And Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. Then Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him.” - 

Hold onto only Christ and enter into prayer. Then, God will answer us. May we receive absolute answers. Hold onto the fact that God’s power is limitless. No problem is a problem to God. 

(3) Restore the Future to Be Conveyed—"The Only"

1 Samuel 7:12 “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’ ” - After Samuel gave the blood sacrifice, God answered by overcoming the power of the Philistines. Samuel held onto Christ, then an answer came to them. Hold onto this our covenant. Samuel confessed that God has helped them and called it Ebenezer. This same power is upon us. God who helped Samuel is also within us. If you hold onto this covenant then no problem is a problem for us. It will all be solved. 

Conclusion

Matthew 6:9 “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.” - All closed doors have been opened for us. Through the death of Christ, all doors have been opened for us. Great blessings are before us. The God the Father is our Father. If we just give God glory then God will guide us towards the most perfect path. May we receive great blessings in our lives. May we give glory to God this week.
